The original might be tempered. A local hardware store might be able to tell/sell you you what you need like frosted tempered glass in the right size. If the frame is removable, bring that along.

I'm all for the plexi if you have that at hand for other projects, but perhaps not for food. Like another poster said, thicker the better. One thing to note is that it will scratch and be a bacteria trap.
