I began reading the Elder Eddas (Norse poetry, one of the main sources for our information on Norse mythology) and a few of the dwarfs' names are pretty familiar... by AshShieldsin TheHobbit

[–]eremiticjude 4 points5 points ago

The hobbit would end up being something of a pain in Tolkien's worldbuilding ass. He conceived of it as a story for his kids, so he didn't bother coming up with middle-earthian dwarf names, he just cribbed. its a decision that would cause him some grief, and in classic tolkien style rather just change them in later editions he wrote up a very complicated way of justifying the names.

My character is causing problems in our game, and I need to fix it. Can anyone help? by Azza_bambooin rpg

[–]eremiticjude 5 points6 points ago

i have run into this problem a lot both as a player (who knew you could be too chaotic for an evil campaign...) and as a GM (wrote a rebel centric, spy heavy star wars dark times campaign... they became pirates).

I don't know that theres a solution for you. You don't want to change, but thats exactly what you have to do. Lawful Good doesn't hang with neutral/evil. They just don't. So you have to ask yourself what would make your character hang with that kind of people?

some suggestions:

  1. greater good. find some cause your character gives enough of a shit about to sin a bit
  2. betrayal. some shit happens that overturns her worldview. her noble father was a coward, etc.

Was this a new group? ie, did you know they'd be playing chaotic like this?

Magic in a non-medieval setting by delijoein Fantasy

[–]eremiticjude 1 point2 points ago

Your argument hinges on their popularity being identical, which is false.

Harry Potter: 400+ million Twilight: 116ish million

Harry Potter != Twilight

Additionally, you'll note i never used the word good. Compelling is a better word, and this case yes, Twilight is compelling. 116 million copies sold indicates SOMEONE found it interesting.

theres a reason that the average american can't name the pulitzer winner. technically good and popular just aren't the same thing, haven't been in a really long time, which leads you to question exactly how important "technically good" is when assessing if someone will like a book, the original point of this thread. did he ask for literary fantasy? did he ask for compelling, closely written magic? no he asked for books with magic. so get off your high horse, you sound like a pretentious 3rd year english major.

[–]eremiticjude 5 points6 points ago

Arguably the most popular books, regardless of genre, in the last twenty years. Responsible for bringing more kids a love of reading than other single thing I can think of. Makes a pretty compelling argument that, at the very least, the storytelling is good. Technical judgements are fine but if you try to use them to dismiss unarguable success you'll look like you've got an agenda or something.

Received a text from a random number, it kept me entertained for my final stretch of work. by Nessabeanin funny

At what point, upon receiving such a text, do you think to yourself "clearly, what this persons needs is to be manipulated then patronized". Whats the end game there? amusement? cause its kinda douchey frankly.

Finished Dune by Frank Herbert recently. Am I correct in thinking that Paul Atreides is not truly precognitive or psychic, but just a vastly intelligent game theory human-supercomputer? by serenity78in scifi

as long as the sequels are written by Frank Herbert, you're good to go. I actually thought the post-GodEmperor books were some of my favorites.

[–]eremiticjude 23 points24 points ago

incorrect. he CLAIMS to have been working from his fathers note, except:

  1. he has never shown these notes
  2. he has never documented what points they covered
  3. he has repeatedly contradicted the original Frank Herbert books

They're only canonical because, unlike Tolkien's son, Brian Herbert has no issues with using his legal ownership of the trademarks to ride his father's spinning corpse like a surfboard to a sad, pathetic, payout.

if it weren't for the untrammeled hilarity of poor Shosru Ryoichi this would have been my favorite piece of art in the set. VORPAL BUNNY!

So Embers of War previews are mostly finished. Thoughts on your clan's new goodies? by Tsuruchi_Mokibein l5r

[–]eremiticjude 0 points1 point ago

I was not immediately impressed with the spider previews. I don't think paragons got the help we needed, though Tenbatsu is a baller, and the deck is definitely close, so maybe that will do it. The new Dark Virtue is just... disappointing. Conquerors got a LOT of help though, to the point that i suspect its very close to paragons.

i don't play monks, so i can't speak to that, but lots of interesting weapons this set, so i suspect that'll help.

to me, the spider deck that got the biggest lift was ninjas. Despite being blank, our new 6 force shug beatstick is a welcome addition. TONS of great spells and ninja actions too. i suspect that if spider manages to scrape together a kotei win this season, it will be out of the shadows lair.

Hi /r/l5r. New to the game and am totally digging it. by Leucosiain l5r

[–]eremiticjude 1 point2 points ago

welcome! from your flair, i see you've selected the very excellent spider clan. GOOD CHOICE! i being not at all biased think they are the BEST clan, period.

to that end, i highly recommend you head on over to spider.daigotsu.com and check out the spider clan forums if you haven't already.

So here's what's on those BART seats. Stay classy San Francisco... by Lemondoodlein funny

Again, i must point out LA. Just as much draw, if not more so, and an order of magnitude sketchier. You seem excessively fixated on theft and bicycles, but i would argue LA has far graver issues that are also far more common.

i lived in SF for 7 years. never had my window smashed, never got robbed, never had my bike stolen.

HAHAHAHHA

oh wait, you're not trying to be funny?

have you been to any of the inbred, redneck, armpit of california cities between SF and LA? or how about the many no doubt very pleasant cities north and east of SF who's primary claim to fame is prodigious meth production?

Or shit, LA itself? I hate hipsters, so i know what SF has got wrong with it, but LA has hipsters too, as well as hollywood scum and a homeless population that makes San Francisco's look like well groomed daytime TV stars.

And thats just in CA. Pick a state in the US and you'll find a dirtier, uglier, more fucked up city than SF. I'm not saying its Utopia, but its a damn sight nicer than a LOT of places, and certainly not remotely worth of the "dirtiest places on this side of the US" accolade you've bestowed upon it.

[–]eremiticjude 0 points1 point ago

that having been said, San Francisco is wonderful. i suspect you'd see equally sketchy shit just about any city.

[–]eremiticjude 1 point2 points ago

bah. this is nothing. Take the 38 across the city after midnight, then talk to me about Public Transportation horror stories. I lived in Pac Heights for two years, and riding the 38 to and from work and a social life downtown, i saw every possible combination of sketchy person and behavior you can imagine.

off the top of my head, the worst might have been the junky who shat himself while shooting up in the back of a PACKED bus. that was a smell you just don't ever forget, no matter how much you try.

well, in fairness, it is water FALLING OUT OF THE SKY! whats natural about that? on the other hand, a river is just a big water dish with great recirculation.
