Deke - A Canadianism formed by abbreviating 'decoy'. Entry also has an excellent animated GIF. by dbarefootin wikipedia

[–]english_major 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I used "deke" in Boggle the other night. I did not know it was a Canadianism, nor that it was connected to hockey. I always just thought of it as deking in somewhere or deking out.

This woman is the very definition of "hero" in my book. More people should know about her. She almost single-handedly saved an entire generation of Americans. by KazamaSmokersin wikipedia

I thought the same thing. I had never once stopped to think who Frances Kelsey Secondary was named after. I know about it because it is a really progressive school.

ITAP of tent caterpillars by english_majorin itookapicture

We were out for a walk the other day when we saw a feral apple tree covered in tent caterpillars. To get this one, I had to get underneath the knots of caterpillars so that they were backlit by the sun.

My father once told me that in most offices/careers, you will find that 10% of people tend to do 90% of the work. Have you found this to be true in your workplace?s by 1ncognitoin AskReddit

[–]english_major 0 points1 point ago

The only payoff is that people like working with those who get things done . Most of us dislike working with slackers.

I had heard of the rule as 80/20. It may not always be accurate, but it is a good ballpark. "A small number of people do a lot of work" is also true but not specific enough.

How about if I phrase it this way? One person going full-tilt gets four times as much done as someone who does the minimum? Out of all of the people I know, I would say that about one in five are the type of people who just get things done for the sake of getting them done.

I would even extend the rule to social situations. In any crowd, there are just a few people who get the ball rolling, set things up, organize events. Most people just wait around, looking to see who is going to show up.

What did school teach you that was blatantly false once you researched it on the Internet? by peetssin AskReddit

[–]english_major 3 points4 points ago

I am a teacher who has had to admit that I was wrong on a few occasions. The tough thing is, my students never let it go. If I gloss over it, they forget. If I admit that I was wrong, they continue to make a big deal out of it.

Which works of fiction have the most historically accurate/innacurate depictions of your field of study? by xxkibblezxxin AskHistorians

[–]english_major 1 point2 points ago

I am no expert, but I have taught the play to several high school classes.

Here are the inaccuracies that I tell them about:

  • Abigail and John's ages
  • Tituba being Indian (maybe Carib Indian) not black
  • That John was not a farmer but ran a pub of some sort
  • That there were many more judges but they were reduced to Hathorn and Danforth
  • That there were more girls involved than he could characterize
  • That John's family was more extensive - he had an older son from an earlier marriage and a teenage daughter at the time - they were all arrested.

I think that what actually happened to the people there was historically accurate. The accused were hanged, while one was crushed. The idea of witch burnings did not come from this play.

My understanding is that the play is an accurate portrayal of what happened. He switched a few characters. The most notable change was the ages of Proctor and Abigail, who were 61 and 11 in the historical records but late 30's and 17 in the play. In order to make Proctor a hero, he could not be an old man having had sex with a child.

Most of the dialogue was taken from court records. This play was very well researched.

I think that there are a lot of us with G+ accounts waiting for the shift. I am getting sick of FB. I spend more time on Reddit and Twitter. G+ has the potential to be Twitter, Reddit, FB and Skype in one package. It just isn't useful until others are using it.

TIL Nearly all soy products and ingredients have a highly toxic neurotoxin called Hexane in them. by DaveRJrin todayilearned

[–]english_major 2 points3 points ago

I did a little searching for a more credible source than Natural News.

It seems that you would have to eat thousands of veggie burgers per day to get even close to the levels that could have a measurable toxic effect.

At this point, I am not worried.

Loanwords from Vietnamese? by sabu632in linguistics

[–]english_major 0 points1 point ago

I recognize all of them and know their meanings, but I spent some time in Vietnam. "Nuoc nam" should be "nuoc mam." As another commenter noted, you should include Tet. It is more familiar than banh chung.

Can I just vent for a sec? Regarding discipline in the classroom. by circledotin teaching

[–]english_major 0 points1 point ago

You can follow school policies and still screw up.

All that matters to me is that it works. I don't send kids to the office. I don't deal with discipline issues.

Once it gets to the stage where you are in conflict with a kid, you have already lost. I never let it get that far.

So, when I say that he screwed up, I mean that he let it get to the point where he was in a conflict with students in front of their peers.

LPT: Buckeyballs make great fridge magnets by TheKiddin LifeProTips

I have been getting the rare earth magnets from Lee Valley. I use a glue gun to affix them to coins, bolts, smooth rocks, anything. You need a small object to grasp so that you can get them off of the fridge. Plus, it makes them look cool.

I've recently discovered a passion for making simple logos for open source projects. Want a logo? by Rainfly_Xin opensource

[–]english_major 1 point2 points ago

I am on the planning committee for a conference taking place next February. The conference centres on Moodle, an open source learning management system.

Here is the banner with logo that we have up right now. Some people have mentioned getting a new one, but nothing is happening.

If you could do something with that, we would all love you. Should we credit Rainfly_x on the program?
