McTavish Fireball by Goofyfootin surfing

[–]enator 1 point2 points ago

Depends, if the board is used and is a good price, go for it. Otherwise, it's not worth it. Just get something used and long. Your biggest concern is getting your wave count as high as possible when starting out. The small nuances of the board design really won't make a huge difference (a full on nose rider might be a little harder to turn than a performance long board, but you'll be able to figure either one out).

I know you want a board that you can progress on and all, but you will be progressing on any board as long as it's not too small/short. Honestly, a new board will just get beat up and you're going to want a new one in 3-6 months anyway.

When did you start surfing? by dumbassthenesin surfing

26 visited a friend in CA, he got me to catch a wave on a soft top. ended up really getting into it, now surfing year round on the lakes, trying to move out west if i can make it work.

Getting pumped out quickly, can't even use my hands after a few routes. by enatorin climbing

I'll definitely take this into consideration and will be sure to warm up properly with some traversing and easier problems before climbing anything harder.

I try to keep my arms straight, but I'm pretty tall/lengthy so it can be really hard to straighten out on most of the routes, and a lot of times I feel scrunched up and my arms are all t-rexed (if that makes sense). The same can happen with my legs where they're too scrunched up to push myself up, so I need to pull until I get my weight centered over my leg and can push with it.

I am very new to climbing - it's only been 4 weeks. The "pump" sensation literally feels like I just lifted a ton of weights and my forearm muscles are pumped up, and then I lose all ability to grip. It's so bad that I can't even grip a huge easy hold, my hands just can't grip it and slide right off.

Pretty interesting raised deck shape. Anybody ride one of these? by schwamiin surfing

[–]enator 0 points1 point ago

Imagine trying to duck dive that. I've got a 6'0 Bing that's sort of a step deck (they called it a concave deck) where the center has way more foam than the rails, but it's still only 2 7/16ths or just under 2.5" thick.

Huge discrepancy in air/water temp in NY this week. Will a 3/2 do the trick? by _the_typistin surfing

[–]enator 0 points1 point ago

if it's a quality glued/sealed 3/2 than you'll probably be solid for a little while. it would be better if you had booties though. 50 is still pretty chilly.

a few weeks ago i surfed water in the mid 40's with air in the high 70's. it was freaky.

Epic Minnesota wave by myrrhbeastin surfing

[–]enator 2 points3 points ago*

FUCK YEAH. for the off-shore wind change.

edit: should add that this is the only way conditions like this can exist on the lakes - you need a massive on shore wind that's been blowing for a while to suddenly switch directions and go off shore. then you get a few hrs of magic.

If you wanted to not be more than a hundred feet from ready to surf waters where'd you live? by General_Incompetencein surfing

[–]enator 1 point2 points ago

there's possible swell in chicago this tues/wed/thurs. though this unseasonably warm weather has messed shit up - no good surf since feb. do you have a board/wetsuit? the water is warm enough now that you can get away with a 4/3, booties, and gloves as long as the air is warm.

Jeremy Rumas is also a really cool guy - shared some nice clean waist to chest high waves with him in Gary IN this Feb, and later found out he was the guy doing this film project when trying to pick up a print of some of the art. Can't wait for this film to come out.

Need advice: retro fish or hybrid? by orestmercatorin surfing

[–]enator 0 points1 point ago

yeah, i can duck dive the shit out of it. duck dive-ability was a big concern for me because i was sick of padding out in bigger surf with big thick boards. i'm 6'2, 175ish. though, i can only get my knee on it, it seems too small to use my foot, but it still duck dives fine. no need to bury one rail first or anything like that...

Need advice: retro fish or hybrid? by orestmercatorin surfing

[–]enator 0 points1 point ago

you should look into a quad, and don't be afraid to go shorter and thick/wide. i stepped down from an 8'0 to a 6'4 twin fin retro fish and found it to be too much foam (but it was incredible at catching waves) and moved down to a 6'0 quad fish/modern shortboard hybrid and love it. the 6'0 is a bing dharma, and it is rad - gets into waves easier than you would think, and is so sensitive. it's supposed to work in bigger surf but i haven't had the chance to surf it in anything bigger than chest high and it's been nothing but awesome.

Surfboard shop around Newport Beach by surfinfan21in surfing

[–]enator 2 points3 points ago

thirds for the frog house. they rented me my first soft top, sold me my sexy used 8'0 dan taylor at a great price, and were able to match a loose fin for $8 when i was out there and broke a fin in heavy huntington beach last month. they're they only shop i'll go to whenever i'm visiting a friend who lives out there.

Got a board, an 8ft 1inch board, you like?. Gonna get a leash, maybe rash guard? Then gonna head out to the beach next weekend to hopefully catch my first wave by boomboomstarin surfing

[–]enator 2 points3 points ago

looks like a perfect beginners board, but if you're surfing around people i would recommend a soft top your first time out so you don't hurt anyone. if you use that board for your first shot don't forget the leash, stay away from people, and try not to let go of the board.

have fun!

Perfect, Sunset is where my gf and I were looking anyway. Cheaper rents, close to OB, and we have a dog and 2 cats (I hear sunset is more pet friendly for rentals).
