But the point is it's helpful to Obama to make Johnson look like a serious candidate because Johnson would peel off a lot of people who would otherwise vote for Romney. A friendly debate is all it would take for that to happen.

Debating somebody isn't "punching down" though, and making Johnson look good is the whole point. It might look bad if it's seen as a desperate and purely political move but if they can sell it as a genuine exchange of ideas and people tune in it would probably fatally hurt Romney.

The more exposure for Johnson the more it will split the Republican vote, pretty Machiavellian stuff but it will also help to get people to take Libertarians more seriously. All Obama has to do is win Florida and he's got it, just taking even 2 or 3% from Romney might do it. I think a good debate with an actual conservative would cost Romney more than that. Romney could then debate Nader or something if he's running but I doubt it would be as damaging.
