U of C team creates cancer-free stem cells in bulk: Researchers find a way to eliminate cancer gene by Splinesin science
[–]eckliptic 35 points36 points37 points 9 hours ago*
The news article and the title is complete bullshit.
c-myc is one gene associated with cancer when it is mutated. It is not "the cancer gene." From what I can tell from the paper all they did was find a way to generate iPSCs in a kind of suspended culture medium with and without using c-myc.
The team has so far used the bioreactor to make stem cells that then become cancer-free mice."
I mean, come on, does any one believe this? They made an entire mouse from stem cells? This article is just completely ridiculous. If scientists created an entire animal, with functioning organs, from a set of pluripotent stem cells, this would be on the NYTimes and the scientists can read the article on their way to Stockholm.

What can you tell me about Crohn's Disease? by dontworryaboutitsin medicine
For milder cases often only 1 or 2 immunesuppresants. There are infusions for more advanced cases. But sometimes the number of pills goes up to treat consequences of the disease and consequences from the treatment. 12 pills for Crohn's and its consequences would be very much at the upper limit. They likely would have other medical issues that necessitate so many meds
Anyone have experience with manual proning therapy for ARDS? by fallibilismin askclinical

how do you manually prone an intubated patient. Seems like it would be a bigger shit show than just regular rotoproning. The data for proning is already shaky as it is
Do 3rd year med students get a weekend off now and then? by mutatronin medicalschool
Definitely not. Especially early on in each rotation
[–]eckliptic 2 points3 points4 points 2 days ago
yeah psych is pretty much guaranteed to have free weekends. Fam med most likely as well.

Depends entirely on the rotation. I would wait to find out what all her rotations her. Rotations like psych and fam med tend to be a lot more relaxed than surgery or ob/gyn.
I'm 34. Is it worth it to try to go to med school now? by cab360in medicine
yeah they all had college degrees. The lack of a college degree really adds an extra wrinkle since it significantly extends the timetable
It's certainly possible but you should try to figure exactly what you'd need to do to get there in terms of classes, test prep etc. The salary cut will be immense during this time and if you have a family with a lot of financial obligations, it might mean significant changes to your lifestyle. My med school class had several 35+ year olds and they were some of the strongest applicants come residency time.

When Asked to Affirm My Medical School Choice After May 15th. by T_Thomasin medicalschool
[–]eckliptic -1 points0 points1 point 8 days ago
I would wait for the MD. It's an uphill battle for residency spots as a DO, especially if you want to do something competitive. Even if you dont get in this time around, 1 year wont make a big difference. But if you lock yourself in as a DO, you're creating a huge obstacle for yourself when it comes time for residency.

Hi Meddit, any physicians with a stutter out there? by stutteringthrowawayin medicine
[–]eckliptic 5 points6 points7 points 9 days ago
There's an attending radiologist at my hospital with a huge speech impediment. Not a stutter but I think something anatomical prevents her from speaking clearly.
Year 3 and 4 of medical school will suck but there are plenty of specialties that dont require you to really speak with patients.

I think if youre been living at home and will be moving out for the first time, most you should learn basic life lessons like: How to cook basic meals How to do laundry How to manage your finances (setting up autopay)
I think you might have better luck in any College related subreddits since thats when a lot of people move out of the house.
Chronic lower back pain, and the meds that I take...will it ever improve? by Lighthouse72in medicine
[–]eckliptic 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
Especially since you're now complaining of depression, I would ask your doctor about duloxetine or nortriptyline. Mental perception of pain is a huge component of dealing with chronic pain. That isn't to say your pain is imaginary or all your head, but that things are much worse if youre dpressed.
[–]eckliptic 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
Have you looked into steroid injections? Depending on the etiology of pain that can help. Unfortunately often times acute pain can develop into chronic pain where the inciting disease is no longer the pain trigger. Once complex chronic pain sets in the brain rewires to completely misinterpret pain. In those instances medications like notriptyline, duloxetine seem to be much more effective than things like narcotics. Narcotics provide temporary relief but people quickly need to escalate and end up acquiring paradoxical hyperalgesia.
I think I would look into academic pain management centers that have a multidisciplinary approach where the providers can offer both medical and procedural management. And if youre not finding any relief, I would look into chiropractics and acupuncture. Even if it's just the placebo effect, trying each out for a session or two will not make you broke and ifthere's a chance to help, why not. Just make sure you dont have any cervical manipulation.
