Anyone else not really bothered by the Diamond Jubilee? by jm114249in unitedkingdom

[–]eatmycow 19 points20 points ago

I lived in Canada two years ago and the difference that strikes me most is that when they get given a reason to celebrate they embrace it and make the most of it. They had the winter olympics and everyone was so excited about it.

This year we have two great one off celebrations - one even gets you an extra day off work! Yet everyone seems pissed off about. Why do we all have to be so grumpy.

Recently on Reddit the UK got a lot of lack for 6 men being arrested and charged for remarks they made on facebook. What are your feelings on what happened? Do you feel differently as a Brit? by MattyHchristin unitedkingdom

[–]eatmycow 0 points1 point ago

If the group of people it targeted was not Jews, and instead say, the supporters of a certain football club or a political party would the same thing happen? I don't believe it would.

Is this a good comparison? I believe so, at least better than comparing religion to race.

I don't believe what was said on the facebook group was appropriate (although it's been hard to figure out exactly what was said), though being arrested seems like an extreme way to deal with it. I think arresting people will just cover up a problem that most people thought didn't exist, and would prefer to carry on believing it doesn't exist.

It's better these people are allowed to speak out so people can still be aware that these issues still exist.

Why does water only reflect images off of its surface? by Alidacoin askscience

[–]eatmycow 1 point2 points ago

Treatid is right. Interestingly as well the reflection properties of light are different depending on the polarization of the light. The result of this is that if you view the water through a polarizing filter it is possible to block out the reflection and obtain a much clearer view into the water, a method often used by fisherman and photographers.

Question about booking trains in advance, general holiday advice by meowfacemanin unitedkingdom

[–]eatmycow 0 points1 point ago

Good to know. I always use the collect at station option, or print at home if collection isn't avaliable.

Question about booking trains in advance, general holiday advice by meowfacemanin unitedkingdom

[–]eatmycow 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, you can't really count on it though. And the other problem is the guy on the platform at the station doesn't have much contact with the actual conductor on the train. I've had it go both ways to be honest.

Canal boat company Water Chariots is charging £95 for adults and £50 for children for the journey to the Olympic Park during the Games by jxmitchellin unitedkingdom

[–]eatmycow 1 point2 points ago

While it is expensive, it seems totally reasonable for the business to do this. The olympics is meant to bring money to the capital and this is the kind of business that will achieve that. Simple supply and demand economics, though it remains to be seen whether there will be demand at this price.

On www.thetrainline.com you book one journey then at the end there's an option to "Add Another Journey" before paying. This is the cheapest website I have ever found. Please bear in mind the cheapest tickets you can get are almost always ones that come with reservations, meaning that you have to travel at the particular time/day that you booked, other wise the ticket is invalid (no upgrades/refunds as far as I know).

May also be worth looking into getting a railcard, they save you 1/3 off each ticket you buy, and I think the Young Persons 16-25 costs £30, not sure about others though.

Noob Question: What happens to the tires after a race? by Doogragooin formula1

[–]eatmycow 1 point2 points ago

I'm 90% sure Pirelli take them back to study, I know they definitely do with the damaged ones. Pirelli probably recycle them once they're done with them.

I can't imagine it would be easy to get hold of one as there is a lot of technology that goes into making them and Pirelli wouldn't want to give there competitors too much of a chance of how they design and make them.

We're in the midst of the most exciting, unpredictable, and wide-open championship since 1983. It's spellbinding. And yet there is more bickering on this sub than ever before. Can't we just be good to each other and enjoy this incredible season? Please? by Mulsannein formula1

[–]eatmycow 12 points13 points ago

I signed up when there was 3k, I thought it got shit when there was 7K. It must have been you that ruined it! Damn you!

Just kidding, I love this place, it's changed but you gotta learn to embrace it and if you stop participating it's only going to become less of what you desire.

Edit: Or you could create r/trueF1!

UK customers keep refusing my packages by sjgargin unitedkingdom

[–]eatmycow 16 points17 points ago

In Canada prices are always marked without VAT, so people are ready to pay that bit extra. In England this is not the case. All prices are almost always marked including VAT. If people suddenly find they have to pay 20% more they may feel a little cheated, or just not think it's worth it.

You have two options:

1) Make it VERY clear that VAT is not included for UK customers or try and work out a way to add VAT to the price and pay it for them.

2) Mark the item as a gift, then I believe VAT is not needed to be paid, though I imagine this is illegal if the item is in fact not a gift.

I think you're forgetting just how bad Legard was. Edwards is no Brundle, but I'd have him over Legard everyday of the week.

Can Button make it to the end of the race on these tyres? And nice one Hamilton!

What's the Hamilton - Grosjean gap. Is it possible for Lewis to catch him?

Edit: 10 seconds and his tyres going off, so probably not.
