Wisconsinite Redditors: RECALL ELECTION TOMORROW! VOTE! by podank99in politics

[–]dominatus 0 points1 point ago

In the US it depends. In a dual income situation, where both individuals make about the same, and they are able to itemize their deductions (instead of taking the standard deduction), they will be taxed more (I can go into details, but I doubt anyone cares). This situation applies to many middle class and especially upper middle class people.

In a situation where one makes much more money than the other (or one doesn't work at all), there is a decent tax benefit for being married

So, I was stupid enough to criticize a certain libertarian politician in /r/politics. Now a votebot downvotes every post I make on any subreddit 5 times within a minute of posting. Any ideas, reddit? by doc_daneekain AskReddit

Unless of course you want the freedom to get an abortion, then Rob Paul is ok with the state having the ability to take that away. Or if you're a gay couple wanting to get married, he's ok with not letting you have that freedom either.

But yeah, if you're a heterosexual white male, Ron Paul wants to save your freedoms.

Do you have a source to confirm you can die within a day from dehydration in those locations? I don't disbelieve you, I'd just really appreciate a source.

I'm sorry, but taxes probably don't work the way you think they do. The low income brackets in America are doubled for married people. Furthermore, you don't pay the rate for the bracket you're in for all you're money, just the portion over the bracket.

The only time marriage helps you on taxes is if you have a very very high income, or one person has a relatively high income and the other person has no income or very little. (because the two get "averaged" and you pay a lower rate overall)

You both live in Florida (from a previous answer) so you pay no income tax to the state. Furthermore, if you're both making very little, you probably pay virtually no (or completely no) income taxes to begin with.

EDIT: And a note, marriage can actually cause you to pay MORE taxes. If you have a joint asset, like a mortgage, when single one person can claim the interest while the other person takes the standard deduction. When married, you can no longer do that, both people need to itemize, so you effectively lose 1 person's standard deduction and end up paying about 1k more in taxes a year (depending on your bracket, more or less). Happened to me.

And to back you up further, I saw a break down of that stat once. If you discount all the shotgun weddings and people getting married right out of high school, the rate drops to something like 20%.

If the moon were the size of one of the gas giants, but the same density, how would that change the tides? by womanbearpigin askscience

I think OP meant "but the same mass" as in, the same mass as our current moon but the size of a gas giant.

TIL there was NO income tax withholding from paychecks until World War II where the Fed Gov promised it would be temporary and end when the war ended. by AkaSillyGirlin todayilearned

[–]dominatus -1 points0 points ago

World War I began in 1914. In addition the amendment was introduced in 1909. In FURTHER addition, the income tax was introduced during the civil war. The amendment was to cement the constitutionality of it.

So basically, everything you said was wrong.

Has there been any research on how something like this would have evolved?

Right, that's why they amended the constitution in 1913 to specifically include the power to tax incomes....because it was meant to be temporary ಠ_ಠ

Does string theory contradict or replace anything in the Standard Model? by dominatusin askscience

[–]dominatus[S] 0 points1 point ago

Does string theory still consider these fundamental objects to be "ripples" in a field like the Standard Model does? Or is that entire notion only present in the SM?

Why is gender a 50/50 split? by nacbriein askscience

[–]dominatus 5 points6 points ago

The OP specifically asks why equal numbers of X and Y sperm are produced. That's what I addressed. In Elephant Seals equal male and female embryos are produced, and it is the mother who selectively absorbs embryos of a certain sex due to environmental pressures. But the question of why equal number of "male" and "female" sperm are created, even in Elephant Seals, is addressed by my answer.

Why is gender a 50/50 split? by nacbriein askscience

[–]dominatus 2 points3 points ago

That would depend on exactly what the OP was asking, wouldn't it? Is he looking for a mechanical or evolutionary explanation to the question at hand. I explained the "mechanical" process for what drives the 50/50 split in human gender, regardless of it's evolutionary cause. I don't see how it's not a valid answer given the original question was still open to some interpretation.

Why is gender a 50/50 split? by nacbriein askscience

[–]dominatus 18 points19 points ago*

A male has both an X and a Y chromosome. When his cells split to form sperm cells, half of the chromosomes end up in one sperm cell, the other half in another. The end result is one sperm cell with an "X" and one with a "Y". Since the man's sperm cells are produced from cells with both an X and a Y, he makes equal sperm X and Y during that division.

All of a female's eggs are "X", so if a "Y" sperm meets up with an egg, it creates an XY a.k.a. a male. If an "X" sperm meets up with an egg, it creates an XX a.ka. a female.

If a massive asteroid hit earth, would it be more catastrophic if it hit land or open ocean? by mrhomerin askscience

[–]dominatus 5 points6 points ago

Ice is less dense than water, that's why ice floats in water. In fact, when ice floats in water, it displaces exactly as much water as it would if it were melted (the rest pokes above).

Here's a simple experiment. Get a cup of water with an ice cube in it. Draw a line where the water is. Let the ice cube melt. The water level will have not moved.

Maybe. My wife and I each get a chunk of money (equal, of course) each month to do whatever we want with. We only have a set "going out" budget, so often times one of us will use our personal money to treat the other to dinner.

How far away from Earth would you be able to detect human presence? by e1_duderin askscience

[–]dominatus 2 points3 points ago

My point was, visible light is the part of the spectrum we can see. The rest is still light, just not visible. My question was rhetorical.

Right, so radio waves are then consider forms light

Then explain to me why we have the expression "visible light". What would you call "invisible light"?

You're thinking of visible light. To a lay person, light is visible light. In physics, electromagnetic radiation is considered light of any wavelength.
