Just got back from unloading the effigy and infrastructure trucks. Getting ready to head back out tomorrow and gogogo! We'll be slaving away on the effigy so come bring us cold drinks and stuff :) Ask for 'stash' if you want to find me!

Actually just popped onto r/burningman to see if anyone had any inspirational pre-flipside posts, so thanks for posting this!

This is one of the tunes that ended up being my introduction to electronic music. Heard it on the local high school radio station when I was in jr. high. This led to Nitzer Ebb and NIN, then into PWEI and on into techno.

I wrote this up but OP deleted the thread before I hit post and I didn't want to waste it

OP,

If you want to raise some attention to this (whatever this is) you should really get some more accurate technical detail, because what you said makes no sense to a technical person. It sounds like a line from hackers or some cheesy movie. Maybe you just don't understand what a hard drive is, or what "keystroke" means, or that "packet logic at the node level" sounds like it was made up by a bad scriptwriter. You also don't seem to understand what DHS or the FCC (really??) do. So, if you think something is going on and you're going to be the whistleblower, you need to get some more accurate data or else nobody is going to take you seriously (as you can see by the responses to this post so far).

Also I work for a major ISP and the Men In Black have not dropped by to install any packet probing hard drive nodes into our mainframe clustersphere matrix.

My best guess is that your friend is fucking with you, and it seems to be working.

For sure. I'm with the crew building the effigy. If you want to look for me, ask around for "stash" - Are you part of raid5 or just hanging out with them? We did a sound camp for the last several years but are taking the year off so I imagine I'll be spending plenty of time under the pyramid :)

I first saw this idea here on flickr (Jason Allemann) - Looks like this is copied from his design. It was the next logical step, really.

Looks like it will be fun times when you accidentally tear the ribbon off the plug and need to figure out how to extract it from your audio jack.

Cool idea though. It reminds me of an equipment lockout tag like you'd find on an airplane.

Any suggestions for live sound gear? by FrankNicoin audioengineering

[–]djscsi 0 points1 point ago

Depends heavily on the style(s) of music and size of the space(s) you'll be setting up at. If you have the budget for it, you can't go wrong with EAW speakers. I really like EV's QRX series too, although some are out of production now I think. JBL SRX is always a good choice too. MRX is OK if you can't afford the hotness. For amps I'd recommend QSC's PLX series. Crown also makes good reliable amps. I usually recommend people buy used PA gear if they're on a budget as you get much more bang for your buck, but if you're going to be gigging the stuff regularly and making back your investment money then new is OK.

I can give more specific advice if you want to give more info about venue size and music styles :)

Will keep an eye out for you! Event is coming up way too fast. We're loading the infrastructure/effigy/etc trucks tomorrow morning at 10am. If you're free we could certainly use more hands.

Why off freenode? Any technical reason for that? Just curious. Whenever my IRC client resets, i have to remember 8 different servers to connect to.

Oppurtunity to get a pair of these for free. Never heard of them. What do you guys think? by Timmmmehin audiophile

[–]djscsi 2 points3 points ago

While I haven't used this particular model, my experience with CVs like this is that they tend to be bass heavy, lacking in mids and sort of flat highs. They work fine for house parties, handle a lot of power, and they sound pretty good for certain types of music like punk/metal. They're not audiophile grade speakers and I wouldn't put them in my living room, but hey you can't beat free! They would make great speakers for a garage/workshop.

Results from the /r/sysadmin survey by grdlockin sysadmin

[–]djscsi 2 points3 points ago

Not really. I'm in my 30s but I'm still a geek and have no desire to spend 40 hours a week in meetings instead of fixing/breaking things in interesting ways. Maybe in another 10 years I'll reconsider this position.

Results from the /r/sysadmin survey by grdlockin sysadmin

This! When I suggested this survey, the idea was to try to correlate burnout with other factors like length of time at job, # of hours, pay scale/benefits, etc. Would love to see this data.

Sound Cloud Quality Sucks Ass by cassandravoitonin dubstep

[–]djscsi 0 points1 point ago

this is pretty short on technical detail for a blog called "nerds central." you could make a similar argument about facebook's jpeg compression, but good luck getting people to stop using facebook. you didn't even recommend an alternative to soundcloud?

also this is blogspam and your grammar sucks worse than soundcloud's compression.

How often do you feel burned out at your job? by grdlockin sysadmin

[–]djscsi 0 points1 point ago

After seeing a bunch of these posts recently, I think this would be a good subject to capture/analyze some data. It seems like you could use surveymonkey or whatever, come up with a list of questions and get some interesting correlations between the feeling of "burnout" and factors like:

  • length of tenure at job
  • age (range) of employee
  • government vs private sector
  • # of hours/overtime
  • # of employees in company/department
  • major areas of responsibility
  • salary range/benefits/etc.

Just a few things I thought of - but it might be interesting to see if there is a statistically significant relationship between "burnout" and length of time at that job, etc. Anyone know of anything done like this before?
