Reddit, what is the most powerful image you have ever seen? by tokerjoker11in AskReddit

To be fair though, in most wars this applies to humans too.

Even when soldiers do voluntarily join the military, they have no more say in whether their country goes to war than the average citizen.

Wow.

Of all the photos that one really got me teary eyed. You could see the love the two brothers had for each other in the first photo, but at the same time there is an agony at the thought that they might never see each other again.

To think that their worst fears came true is the saddest thing imaginable.

Denver police beat a peaceful man literally to death (revived by EMT's), with witnesses, slap him with fake felony charges and ruin his whole life. 4 years later, no disciplinary action for the officers and PD still stalling the legal process. by baggytheoin Libertarian

Retribution as in monetary? Yes, he is certainly entitled to it. The only problem is that it is paid out by tax payer's money. The cops themselves don't pay a cent. I propose that cops who do such egregiously horrible acts pay for at least part of his compensation through their own paychecks.

My dream is to attend a game at every NFL stadium over the course of 1 season. Here is how it would go down this year. by throwaway_accountantin nfl

[–]deckman 0 points1 point ago

It is an awesome idea! I love visiting new stadiums and admiring the architecture and the fan atmosphere. I remember wanting to do that with baseball stadiums years ago.

I think it would be one of the first things I do if I struck it rich.

It doesn't always end like that. I remember one of the first videos I ever saw on reddit was of a black women butting in line at a pizza pick up joint.

Well the guy she butt in on got upset and spoke into his phone saying something like, "I can't believe it, this lady just butt in line. Some people..." He spoke loud enough for everyone, including her and the security camera to hear. I guess that was his passive aggressive way of protesting.

Well that must have ticked her off because she called her boyfriend in and he turns out to be a huge mofo and he immediate storms in and starts beating the poor guy senseless.

The whole thing was reported in the news and the guy reportedly suffered broken bones all over his face.

moral of the story: either take a stand and prepare to fight for it or just keep your mouth shut and take in on the chin (not literally).

edit: so I mentioned the woman's skin color just to compare it to the OP's story.

ELI5: Why do we change the name of countries in the English language? ie: Deustchland - Germany; Nihon/Nippon - Japan; Espana - Spain by bfelixin explainlikeimfive

[–]deckman 3 points4 points ago

Haha, another interesting tidbit I heard from a war vet.

The term for "America" in Korean is "Mee Gook" where "mee" means America and "gook" means country. Almost all countries in the Korean language have the word "gook" in it. Example, Korea is "Han gook" and China is "Joong gook."

Somehow, the US soldiers heard Koreans saying it and took it as a derogatory term and started referring to Asians as "gooks" and it became a racist derogatory word. Even John McCain got into some controversy for referring to Vietnamese as gooks.

What is your opinion on a trend that has been occurring the last few years where retail chains ask you to donate a few dollars to charity? by deckmanin AskReddit

[–]deckman[S] 0 points1 point ago

I think it's mostly because they don't want to sound like a cheapass who is not willing to donate even a single dollar to help some Children's Hospital.

[–]deckman[S] 1 point2 points ago

I'd never give cashiers a hard time because I know they're probably making shitty pay and will probably get written up for not asking for the donation.

But I doubt complaining to management will much a dent unless it's done on a huge scale because I know it works for them. Heck, even I rarely say no and I've rarely seen a person ahead of me saying no to donating a dollar.

I'm just quoting someone else's comment and don't work retail myself so can't answer that. But it is an interesting point that by donating, you're essentially helping Walmart with tax breaks--that's probably their primary motive for doing this.

Basically, Walmart gets donations from customers, donates a million to some charity which gives them good PR, and they get a tax break on top of that.

And I mentioned this in a different thread, but really irks me is that they usually announce it as, "A $500,000 donation from Walmart for Cancer Research" when it should really be called, "A $500,000 donation from Walmart customers for Cancer Research."

I feel like a bit of a jerk for not tipping the person who changed the oil in my car. At the same time, don't you think it's BS that big chain companies pressure consumers to tip rather than pay people better wages? by preta6in AskReddit

[–]deckman 1 point2 points ago

Yeah that really ticks me off. I'm Canadian and this has been a VERY common trend in retail chains here. They ask, "Do you want to donate a dollar to so and so charity?" and because it's only a dollar you usually say yes.

What peeves me is that they usually announce it, "A $500,000 donation from Walmart to Cancer Research" when it should really be called, "A $500,000 donation from Walmart customers to Cancer Research."

I think I'm going to make it a point of saying, "No" whenever these huge corporations ask me to donate on their behalf.

Too bad you're being downvoted. Even with all the mods there has to come a point when you realize you're just playing for the sake of playing (and unconsciously rewarding yourself with a false sense of accomplishment each to you complete a quest or level up) and not because it's enjoyable.

Personally, in most games once I get through the main story it's not fun anymore no matter how well the graphics and gameplay is.

For me, it came to a point that my time was much more valuable than the money I spent for a game. I paid 50 bucks to buy Skyrim and despite all the rave reviews I found it incredibly boring-- I found it to be a drab story with a bunch of running around looking for things and speaking to people with boring dialogue; it was a chore to continue.

I think I was at 6 or 7 hours into the game (I realize that it isn't much but it just didn't look like it was going to get much better), when I felt my time was more valuable and just gave up and gave the game away.

White House steps up efforts against prison rape: "Sexual violence, against any victim, is an assault on human dignity and an affront to American values," President Barack Obama said in a White House memo. by shallahin politics

[–]deckman 1 point2 points ago

The problem is that the prisons are there to make a profit.

They want as much prisoners as possible and they don't care how they get them, even if it means putting innocent people in jail. Remember that judge who received kickbacks for putting innocent young men into prison?

I don't think it is beyond them to want marijuana to remain illegal just to keep their prisons filled and their profits up.

Serious reports of outbreaks of cannibalism in North Korea by HumourNoirin worldnews

[–]deckman 1 point2 points ago

Well technically only four have been discovered, and that was only because a defector told the South Korean government about it. But one defector has been quoted as saying there are a "countless" number of underground tunnels leading to the South with some even leading to Seoul, the city capital.

So my quote of "tens of thousands" may have been hyperbole but it hasn't been disproven either.

It was only countries that they still have diplomatic ties with such as China or a few Middle East countries and a few countries in Africa. As you could imagine, they are paid pennies, but some are willing to go because at least they get free food. So no, US corporations are not in the picture.

[–]deckman 64 points65 points ago

Actually, it's most of their money...

In South Korean news a few years back, there was a report on Kim Jongil and his insanely lavish spending. There is an upscale wine company in France that sells their wine at something like 900 dollars a bottle and Kim Jongil was the single biggest retail buyer. He spent millions on brand new top of the line Mercedes Benz vehicles for himself and his top officials. He had an indoor swimming pool with artificial wave machine and it was large he had a boat floating in it. There were tons of other jaw dropping details but basically his yearly spending was calculated to be enough to literally feed over a million of his people.

Now his son is exporting his own citizens as laborers to foreign countries to bring in more money to their own failed economy. Those workers are assets used to generate money for himself and they keep none of their wages for themselves.

And incidentally, reports of cannibalism in North Korea has been around for decades. Heck, I remember in the early nineties watching an interview with a North Korean deserter graphically detailing how they cannibalized to survive. That was twenty years ago...

Someone needs to assassinate that son of a bitch.

Dwyane Wade arguing with Coach Erik Spoelstra on the sidelines by nbafan4444in nba

[–]deckman 2 points3 points ago

The reason he couldn't bench Wade is that he doesn't have control of the team. If he were ever to get on Wade's or Lebron's bad side then the entire team would turn on him. A similar thing happened with the Red Sox this season but this would be far worse than that. I often get a sense that Spolstra is just sucking up to the big three and not asserting his authority as coach enough.

The worst part is that after the game Spolstra was heavily defending Wade while Wade refused any comment and did not bother acknowledging that showing up the coach like that was wrong. If you've ever played organized sports you know that you should never show up your coach like that; and it's worse when it's in front of the whole team and millions of viewers. It's just as bad when the showed up coach does nothing about it.

I'm pretty sure the already low amount of respect Heat players had with Spolstra went down even further when Spolstra refused to come down hard on Wade for acting out like that.

MWP made a great play in finding an open man and taking advantage of an opportunity (instead of giving it to Kobe as planned) and Blake made the right play in shooting (he was a 39 percent 3-point shooter), but all I could see is Kobe yelling at Blake for taking the shot that he wanted to make. Selfish.
