TIL that the Unity Sculpture (Between Buildings 9 and 76) is actually a tribute to Gracies Dinnertime Theatre. by zoninationin rit

[–]davidb_ 1 point2 points ago

Yes.

Despite the sometimes antagonistic relationship between GDT and the administration of RIT, RIT chose to recognize GDT's commitment to improving the college in 2008 by commissioning a 24 foot reproduction of GDT's logo. Created by Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez and Leonard Urso, the silver stainless steel piece named Unity is installed in the quad between the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, the College of Applied Science and Technology, and the College of Engineering.

Nope :(

It was much more violent sounding.

Kudos on the win, ladies, but whoever decided a push button throttle with the battery directly connected to the motors (no motor controller at all), that's a very dangerous, poorly thought out design.

Memory Reordering Caught in the Act by preshingin programming

[–]davidb_ 0 points1 point ago

The tone of your comment is completely unnecessary. It wouldn't be idiotic to potentially assume, upon reading "mov [x], 1", that 1 means register 1. x86 register names aren't named that way, but they also aren't named "r1" as the author declares in the next line. They are named eax, ebx, etc. for 32 bit mode, or rax, rbx, etc for 64. Even with x86, it is extremely important to declare the syntax (operand order) when writing code. We write code to communicate with eachother. The fewer ambiguities, the more clearly we communicate. Ultimately, the assembler program/compiler is going to be what decides the syntax, regardless of the language. At the start of every assembler manual/textbook, there will be a short example describing the syntax to use. NASM, for example, uses a different operand order than gas, the GNU assembler. But, they both assemble x86 code.

I agree with you that he explains it quite clearly in the next paragraph, but the pseudocode example I gave does not require the written out english explaination, and is thus easier to read. That is the only point I am trying to make.

Memory Reordering Caught in the Act by preshingin programming

[–]davidb_ 1 point2 points ago

The point and- was trying to make is that the operand ordering is vague, not that the move instruction is confusing. Is it destination, source or source, destination? Pseudocode would solve that.

Store 1 to X, Load Y to r1

is much more clear to the reader than the way it was presented. To be fair to the author, it is clearly specified in the next line of text.

Electrical Engineering Robotics Option vs. Computer Engineering Software option? by [deleted]in rit

[–]davidb_ 0 points1 point ago

I expect that the EME program has a much higher concentration of mathematics courses than the CE program, is this correct?

Yes and no. You will take the same core math classes regardless of major. However, more of the EE courses, specifically the microelectronics courses, are more math-intensive the CE courses. Really though, that shouldn't be the basis for your decision, as they are both very math intensive majors.

I heard someone say that EME majors typically make a larger annual salary post-graduation than CE majors, can you confirm or deny this?

According to NACE surverys, that's not true - CE has a higher average starting salary. So, that statement would be annectdotal at best. Realistically, though, your starting salary will depend on you - your previous experience, your school, possibly your GPA, your intelligence, knowledge, and skillset, and the projects you have done. EEs and CEs compete for the same jobs with the same salary offers at a lot of companies. With the same qualifications, the major is irrelevant.

Is there a significant price difference in tuition between an EME major and a CE major? Will I still have Presidential Scholarship that I received?

Tuition is the same. No idea about the scholarship though. You'll have to ask financial aid about that.

TL;DR Want to know if EE (robotics) is better than CE (software) for a robot nerd like me

Maybe, but maybe not. If you like programming the robots, digital logic design, or system-level control/understanding, I would go for CE. If you like control system theory, or the analog electronics part (things like sensor design, ADC, motor controllers, etc) then I would go for EE.

Home brew club? by wsenderin rit

[–]davidb_ 1 point2 points ago

You're getting a lot of opinions on the legality, so I'll add to the noise. I think it'd be fine. If you're serious about it, talk with one of the professors in the Hospitality/Mgmt Services College to get them as an advisor. Once you do that, recruit some members. Actually registering as a SG club should be pretty easy.

Here's a link to a pdf about the process: http://campuslife.rit.edu/main/uploads/FINAL_Club_E-Board_Manual_UPDATED_1.13.12.pdf

Has anyone been part of the NSA's co-op program? How was it? by intelcentrino2insidein rit

[–]davidb_ 1 point2 points ago

The thing that has consistently amazed me about the NSA is the fact that they pay contractrors nearly double what their own employees make. Sure, government pension is great, and you have the opportunity to do some missions that require government employees, but that still doesn't justify the pay in my eyes. I've heard arguments that they don't want NSA employees to be motivated by pay, but that seems like a bullshi argument to me. What's your impressions on pay?

How many prior passwords does start.rit.edu remember? by josefnpatin rit

The policy isn't really too effective if I can change from mypassword to mypassword1, mypassword2,...,mypassword8, then back to mypassword, all within 4 minutes though, is it?

Honestly, it's a silly policy that just encourages people to write down their passwords on a sticky note beside their desk.

4 year old punished by TSA for hugging grandmother by LurksWithGophersin news

[–]davidb_ 14 points15 points ago

I was in Dulles airport last week and witnessed something similar. A family with a grandmother, mother, and two young girls were going through the security checkpoint. For whatever reason, the "agent" decided the little girls should go through first. They went through without issue, and he told them to stand to the side. One of the little girls ran back through the metal detector to be with her mother. The grandmother then went through, setting off the metal detector. As she turned around, the little girl ran back through to the "unsecure area." The grandmother took her necklace off and the mother walked through. Then one of the daughters. Then the grandmother set off the metal detector again, this time with something in her pocket. The daughter in the "unsecure area" started crying. The other daughter started crying. The mother walked back through to the unsecure area to console her daugher, while the "agent" yelled at her. The other daughter then followed. The entire time the "agent" was following his training, issuing commands to the daughters as if they were adults and could understand what he was saying. The security lines were backed up and instead of being understanding and human, this guy was just being a complete asshole and eventually decided the entire family needed a pat down, slowing down the already backed up line even more.

TSA is a fucking joke and we need to recognize that and hold them responsible. Really, the mandate needs to come from the airlines.

I'm VIctor Santiago, and I am running for Sg President. AMA by bizkut2012in rit

[–]davidb_ 0 points1 point ago

That's true, but I'll provide a bit more context. That was all a media stunt to get the city to overturn/make exceptions to the city ordinance. It was decided in the NYS Court of Appeals that Mayor Bloomberg does not have to enforce that ordinance, so they won their little battle. Plenty of other religious organizations also publicly opposed the ordinance on the same grounds. And, a number of small business owners did likewise, citing costs.

Unfortunately, gay marraige is not recognized everywhere in the US. So, it's not really surprising that those businesses/organizations can get away with the political moves they do. That said, the work the Salvation Army does for the homeless is still commendable. By all means, boycott them. I was just pointing out that Cjaxlyn's statement was (and still is) incorrect.

[–]davidb_ 2 points3 points ago

I think you're getting into a kind of free speech issue here. Salvation Army doesn't like homosexuality, but as an organization they don't withold services from homosexuals. All RIT did was let them collect money on campus. If people want to give money to an organization that spreads anti-homosexuality propaganda while helping homeless people, that's their prerogative. Likewise, people have the right to boycott that organization. Why should RIT tell students they can't collect money for that organization?

I don't think RIT has any obligation or responsibility to do anything to either promote or stop them from doing so.

[–]davidb_ 2 points3 points ago*

though the organization refuses to give any aide to LGBT people or their families.

That statement is not true. You can certainly have reason to dislike the Salvation Army for actively holding positions against homosexuality for their religous reasons, but they give aid to anyone that needs it according to their guidelines, regardless of sexual orientation.

Straight from the source:

There is no scriptural support for demeaning or mistreating anyone for reason of his or her sexual orientation. The Salvation Army opposes any such abuse. In keeping with these convictions, the services of The Salvation Army are available to all who qualify, without regard to sexual orientation.

The co-op program is great. You will get a co-op if you pass the classes (and a great one if you do related work outside of class), and then you will get a much better job as a result of having co-ops (real world experience). You could probably still be successful if you went to UB, but I really think RIT is a better school.
