Howto: Easy Windows Aliases by dannosliwcdin windows

[–]dannosliwcd[S] 0 points1 point ago

Hm. Didn't know about PowerShell aliases. Those are actually what I was thinking of, I guess. I like being able to use aliases from my Run dialog. The idea was to mimic linux aliases since I didn't know about the powershell ones :-p

Thanks for the info. That's a good, clean solution.

Yeah, the occasional lag bothers me. I prefer CTRL+R over the windows search when I'm on my desktop. All of my applications are on an SSD, but I also have a bunch of data on an HDD. So if I try to search for an application in the windows start menu, it occasionally pauses while the HDD spins up because it doesn't want to assume I just want a quick find from the SSD.

How would you set up a http server with some Java apps to access a SQL database over lan? by johnnybigoodein java

[–]dannosliwcd 0 points1 point ago

One of the courses at my school used Tomcat for homework assignments/projects. Here's the setup tutorial: http://agile.csc.ncsu.edu/iTrust/wiki/doku.php?id=home_deployment_instructions

The tutorial has some project-specific stuff, but the general setup help could be useful. The project-specific items are available on sourceforge (linked on that wiki), so you should be able to take a look at the actual project if you decide you want to.

The wiki is course-specific, but it appears to be public-facing, and was the first result in a google search I did on the topic. So I'm gonna say it would be fine to share here.

How do I get better at programming? by Ryden7in java

[–]dannosliwcd 1 point2 points ago

I started programming by writing useless simulations and problem-specific calculators. These were great because the problems themselves were simple (accounting-level math usually) and easy to verify by hand. Since the problems are so simple, you can usually finish each one relatively quick. If you get bored with it when you're done, you can move on to a new problem. Otherwise, you usually come up with fun ideas for new features (like a visualization of your presented results).

Though Java, C, and Python are all good places to start, I usually recommend Microsoft .NET (I'm a fan of C# or VB.NET for starting out). The IDE is clean and smart, and comes with a WYSIWYG GUI editor out of the box. You can quickly and easily produce something you wouldn't be ashamed to show off to your friends.

Here are a few ideas to show you what I mean:

  • Pizza calculator. Figure out things like surface area, cost, how the pizza and bill can be divided between a number of friends, etc. Maybe draw a pie chart to illustrate the results.
  • ATM simulator Make the screen look like an ATM, and code it to act like one. Start out simple (assume everything that will make it easier) and gradually think of other things it needs (multiple users, pin numbers, check for negative balance, etc.)
  • RTF Word processor or plain-text notepad. Lay out a bunch of controls on the screen and write some logic to make it do cool stuff.
  • Programmable robot. Draw an image of a robot that can move around your window. Then invent a scripting language to control the bot. Once this is working, consider allowing multiple scripted bots on the same screen, and let them interact.
  • Your homework. Do your homework for non-programming classes by writing a program to solve the homework problems. This is generally easiest for math/science classes Extra points if you get this to write an essay for you :-p
  • A Piano. Or some other instrument. You push buttons or press keys to interact.

Need help with easy java project by Jparrish91in java

Be aware that the set interface is used when there is no desire for repeated elements in the collection. If this is the intended behavior, make sure your random number generator is used the correct number of times in the event that it gives you a repeat. (http://docs.oracle.com/javase/1.5.0/docs/api/java/util/Set.html)

Try to be more specific in your question. Such a general prompt makes it seem like you're asking us to do your homework for you. Not only would this be unethical, but if your instructor finds out, a zero grade will be the least of your worries. Even if you're not doing this for a course, giving us more information will help us help you.

Regarding the level of fanciness, I also agree that simple is better. I think you may have already gone fancier-than-necessary by using a Collection object to keep track of a group of integers of a predetermined size.

Hey r/startups, is there anyone here in the Raleigh-Durham area? by BigNaturalin startups

[–]dannosliwcd 0 points1 point ago

I haven't participated in Startup Weekend before (but I will this year). As I understand it, you choose which team you want to join based on interest in a product (or other people choose to join yours if they like it). I think spectating is allowed, but the tickets are more expensive. The spectating tickets are for people who just want to network.

[EE Student] What did you guys do outside of class in college to build a resume? by Ornery_Gamerin ECE

[–]dannosliwcd 1 point2 points ago

Extracurriculars are good. A lot of tech companies are trying to make good "giving back to the community" images for themselves, so doing volunteer/charity work helps, too.

Also, a lot of my programming coworkers used to be ECE students, so I wouldn't say it's bad to show your programming projects. Employers like employees that enjoy their work. If your free-time hobbies are similar to your work, it helps to show that.

But if you have an actual project planned and ask nicely enough, the stock room owner will likely give you some of what you want for free.

You can check out ExitEvent to get in touch with other entrepreneurs and investors in the area. I haven't used it, but I've heard a few other people mention it.

Also, Triangle Startup Weekend is coming up in April.

Some of my previous professors/TAs are working in a group to research how software engineering can solve different problems. One of the areas of focus is engineering secure software as part of the whole process from requirements planning to your late prototypes.

Another page of theirs specifically discusses applying test patterns to security: http://securitytestpatterns.org/

I thought I recalled hearing that ground up advil can help with heating the enamel off. Upon searching, however, I ran across a useful picture guide instead. Sure, the advil story is probably a false memory, but I might as well share my thought process for finding this link:

Internship Advice!? by zild3din ECE

[–]dannosliwcd 0 points1 point ago

A lot of companies have university recruiters. You'll be likely to meet these people when a company has a talk at your school (see if your ECE department has a mailing list for such events). Also see if there's a career fair in the area. Even if resumes are online-only, giving a face to connect to your name will help.

Also, attending company events at your university shows a genuine interest in the company rather than saying "I'm just applying to random internships." Even if you're brilliant, they won't hire you if you seem uninterested.

University recruiters get paid to connect students to the company they work for. They know the whole process, what the student wants, and what the company wants from an internship. Actually speak with the recruiter and you'll learn a lot about how you can adapt your application/resume to fit with the company.

It could also be a pun. Assuming the figure on the left makes drip coffee, his coffee maker will allow cold water through a 1-way valve to a heating element, which allows the boiling water to move up towards the filter. This creates lower pressure beneath the 1-way valve than in the reservoir (i.e. a suction). Drip coffee makers suck.

Well, for when you get around to working remotely through the command line, the tools I find most useful are screen, vim, grep, gdb, and if you're working on a larger project, ctags/cscope (vim can have code completion, jump to definition, etc.).

A common problem I had when I started testing my code locally then moving it to RHEL to do pre-submit testing was a lot of segfaults that only appeared on the RHEL builds. Turned out the compiler on my local machine was kind enough to prevent such segfaults by automatically initializing problem variables, but that just hid the problem from me. Since then, I've learned to always explicitly initialize any variable I might read a default value from.

Is the level of vandalism of high-traffic areas at State increasing over previous years, or have I just never lifted my nose from the notebook long enough to notice these things before?

I guess Harrelson at 9pm isn't really high-traffic, but I feel this is a more bold location choice than most of the tagging-type junk, and the daytime vandalization of the wolves near the free-expression tunnel is still in recent memory.
