TROPHY CASE

"Why won't it start?" She said. by ChristosKin techsupportgore

[–]dallasdude 3 points4 points ago

As non tech guy.... how do you keep this from happening? I don't smoke, but do have a cat, and have lots of hard floors and constant dust. I use good filters in the A/C and change them, and I put a standalone air purifier with a good filter in the general area. I've used canned air, but that really just seems to blast the dust around the case where it promptly re-settles. I've tried using a vacuum attachment on the front grilles, fans etc. I can get a lot of the loosely attached surface dust off, but there is always fine dust needing to be wiped off. Short of disassembling the machine and manually cleaning the parts I just can't figure it out.

Would you? If you chance it and lose, you go to prison for four decades. Knowing the state conviction rate is probably 95+% and your fate would be in the hands of a jury pool, and knowing that without tens of thousands of dollars you'll have a horrible lawyer, would you really gamble 12,775 days in jail for the chance to avoid 2,190?

A guilty rapist can plead guilty and serve six years. Obviously therefore six years is seen as an equitable punishment by the state for this crime. Why does the state add thirty five years -- an increase of 600% -- simply because the efendant exercised their constitutional right to jury trial?

My mom tells me that I will get no where with any of my career choices, Reddit what should I do? by Cat-Dogin AskReddit

[–]dallasdude 1 point2 points ago

If you pursue a "fun" career halfheartedly you will fail. I have a few friends that have pretty sweet jobs. I will share their stories.

One is a successful young music producer that now runs their own studio, runs audio at major events, and works with some really top notch musicians. This person grew up wanting to do this and had been involved in some form or another with music since childhood (guitar, drums, various bands etc). While attending college for drumming and sound engineering my friend busted it for a couple years working mind-numbing hours as an hourly sound engineer. Eventually after drumming for a band, and after spending years building up credibility and becoming an expert in the craft of sound engineering and production, the studio was opened and my friend started working harder than ever and hasn't stopped.

Another is a successful TV and film producer. This person, for whom this business is 'in the family' (thus had at least an initial "in"), also grew up knowing exactly what the plan was. While attending university for communications and business they spent summers busting tail as a production assistant on various projects. This person's drive is simply incredible, and they sacrificed (and still do) quite a bit to make it happen (no fun summers, work 80+ hour weeks, work >>> relationships, etc).

A third is a major talent booker. I know less about this person's path as they are only an acquaintance, but the common threads are an early insight into the plan, a long-term and steady commitment to execute the plan, and some family connections to help open a door or two.

And the most common thread of all is that all of these people absolutely love what they do. So much so that they live and breath it and give up so much else in their lives. None of them was lucky, and they all worked HARD to succeed. It wasn't overnight, and they all took over a decade to realize their gains.

Other of my friends enjoy success through advanced-- and most importantly useful-- higher education. By this I mean graduate studies-- masters of accounting, actuarial, law school, med school, pharmacy school, graduate nursing degrees, engineers, MBAs etc.

A third group of friends enjoys success through military opportunities. They all attended one of the service academies like West Point. One flies jets, a second went on from West Point to attend med school and now works as a surgeon, and a third plans to work until retirement eligibility and leave to make good $$ in the private sector while cashing good pension checks.

I think the real key to success, whether you're talking about filmmaking, music production, medicine, business, IT or whatever career, is a combination of planning, motivation, education, hard work and execution. You need to immerse yourself fully and embrace your choice, get involved, and most importantly keep progressing, never stop learning, and never stop moving your career forward.

Complacency, laziness, ambivalence, a negative attitude, and a lack of progression of knowledge/skills/experience are the ingredients for a dead-end job.

DAE feel their game slot/file is tainted if someone else plays even a second of it? by maip23in DoesAnybodyElse

We used to have Burnout 2 on a big screen in a common area of a house with 30 residents. The Crash Mode leader board was very competitive over a 2 year period. It also had the records of a good friend who took his own life (he was great at it so these were generally the top scores). One day shortly after the passing of my friend my neighbor's gf played it while I was away and accidentally over wrote the save file with a new blank one. I was devastated and almost ten years later still think about it.

Red light camera scam? by Jgm8k8in Dallas

[–]dallasdude 0 points1 point ago

They are officer reviewed. PD reviews and signs off on them before the citation goes out. Legally it is the exact same as a city parking ticket. It is an administrative fine assessed against the registered owner of the vehicle. Best to suck it up, pay $75 and not run any more camera lights. Also it is extremely easy to learn which intersections have these and which way they point. I don't run reds but it's good to know which lights you need to be extra careful in.

Watch out. These are easily identifiable by officers. It gives them a free reason to pull you over (equipment violation). Wouldn't want to get unlucky after having a drink with dinner and end up fighting a DUI instead of a $75 administrative fine.

Not bad, Diablo 3. by TakinTheHeatin gaming

[–]dallasdude -1 points0 points ago

I only had the beta but don't think the gfx were upgraded for retail. Yes it looks bad. The beta also ran poorly both on very old (9800GT) and very new (gtx570m) machines. Plus in beta it was only 4 ppl to a game and online matches were quest-specific. I play Rift right now and the gfx are much better, the game has a lot more polish and multi player has a great swarm dynamic with scores of players doing area events. I played D2 for thousands of hours over a dozen years but won't be buying the new one.

The nation’s largest private prison company, the Corrections Corporation of America, is on a buying spree. How isn't this a law? We need government, and exclusively government, to handle some things. Prisons, courts, the military and law enforcement generally ranking towards the top. Can you imagine privatization of the court system?

really thought trader joes or something similar would grab that building. It is a very small store by wall mart standards. It sadly might help the area which fell victim to awful bars and now is mostly a collection of vacant buildings. Nearly everything cool down there is long gone. Beagle, Lulu, gezellig, public house and so many I've forgotten about. At least the Cavern and good record are still hanging on as is johns cafe.

Plus if they intervene then they get sued for putting their hands on a student (breaking up a fight) or discrimination or some other BS. Lawyers are the reason schools' hands are tied, and now apparently lawyers can bow sue whether the school takes action or fails to. The only winners are the scum sucking plaintiff attorneys.

Liquor store in ND was shut down for selling alcohol on easter sunday. How are these laws still legal? by TehCyberJunkiein politics

[–]dallasdude 4 points5 points ago

yep. Here in Dallas we have all the state laws (no liquor after 9, no beer after 12am (1am sat evening), no beer before noon on Sunday etc), but we also have cryptic 'dry areas' where you can't ever buy alcohol. We end up with clusters of liquor stores in the wet areas. Recently the people put an initiative on the ballot to allow beer/wine in dry areas. Liquor stores all heavily opposed it. It passed. Now thry wanna sue claiming the original signatures were invalid or something like that. It's so dumb. Plenty of bars/restaurants are forced to have customers join as private members just to buy a beer with dinner.
