That really is the issue here

You Only Wish MongoDB Wasn't Relational by omg-a-bearin programming

[–]daigoba66 1 point2 points ago

this is good stuff, a proper map/reduce (i guess they're calling it project/group) subsystem is the way to go for complex queries

[–]daigoba66 1 point2 points ago

Why not just use a map/reduce index for your comment queries? You really only need the map function which should select and flatten the comments into a tuple. That gets indexed so you can query on things like comment_date and comment_user.

Now when you query that index, you're only getting back comment tuples (specifically the mapped fields) which match your criteria.

James Bond style watch camera. And it's street legal! by sam-catmanin gadgets

[–]daigoba66 0 points1 point ago

I believe that would only apply to where you have a reasonable expectation of privacy (which is pretty much just at home, in your car, and over the telephone). Certainly in public, or on the "street", there is no reasonable expectation of privacy.

How TFS 11 merge compares to git by coder21in programming

[–]daigoba66 3 points4 points ago

The main reason i can't stand using TFS for SCM is that it really wants you to use Visual Studio projects and solutions to track everything. This really bugs me, a lot. While we do track a lot of .NET code, we also track a lot of code and and resources which are not .NET. Many times a developer is working in Visual Studio, but not always.

Also, I wouldn't hire a programmer who uses a tool if and only if it integrates with Visual Studio. That's like hiring a carpenter that only uses Sears/Craftsman branded tools.

Twitter CEO says SOPA backout silly --> well here's to my Twitter boycott. (We live in a world where too many people don't give a shit). by SonicPacifistin technology

[–]daigoba66 0 points1 point ago

The way Twitter works now, it would be like saying: Why won't email go dark for SOPA?!

Bad analogy. Twitter is a highly centralized system. Sure their front-end servers and data-centers might be globally distributed, but you can only use Twitter if Twitter as an entity is available. E-mail, specifically SMTP, on the other hand is an entirely distributed technology. There is no single-point-of-failure, no single-entity controlling the infrastructure.

NoSql definition by Martin Fowler by nadanadanadain programming

[–]daigoba66 13 points14 points ago

Why even define it? It's like trying to come up with a word for every type of motor vehicle that's not a semi-tractor trailer. Why bother?

There are so many different types of database systems out there, and Fowler even talks about how much trouble it is to find a set of common characteristics.

And of the characteristics he picked, only one possibly applies to everything else out there: "Not using the relational model (nor the SQL language)".

Why Don’t Smartphones Have A “Guest Mode”? by spifin gadgets

I think, for consumer devices (including PCs) the of the multi-user environment should not take off. In fact, for consumer PCs, it will hopefully die out completely.

Take a phone: they're actually very personal devices. You're carrier account actually ties an individual name to a number. There's no reason for it to be multi-user since you are the one using it 99% of the time.

The same goes for most personal computers. And even if you have a shared PC used by a family, do they actually have individual logins? I would venture to say that 99% of the time they share a user account.

LGECCU Strike? by NewShinyCDin Atlanta

Their site says that "86% OF IAMAW MEMBERS REJECTED THE LGECCU'S PROPOSED AGREEMENT". The contract proposal is on the website, which I actually did skim through, but found nothing interesting other than standard employment contract type stuff. But I assume people know since "79% VOTED TO STRIKE". I'm sure you could always walk up to someone and ask.

Unfortunately that rate has dropped to 1.5% in the last year. However is still FAR better than what you'll find at ANY big commercial bank.
