Just bought my first unit, moved everything in until it works. Now to Refine the setup! by jedxin battlestations

[–]cr0n1c 2 points3 points ago

I own a jailbroken Apple TV (with XBMC) and I love it. I also have an HDMI cable (from PC) connected to the same TV screen. Both service their purpose.

I hate Apple, but their ATV is good for a quick and easy HTPC. I definitely recommend if you live with someone who isn't as computer savvy as you are. This has made things waaaay easier.

Is raw sugar actually good for ants or do they just like it? by -misusedmemes-in askscience

[–]cr0n1c 13 points14 points ago

Just to clarify, and not to be a jerk, but you may be talking about refined sugar. To the best of my knowledge, white sugar is refined sugar (even though you didn't say what color it was). "Raw" sugar would be brown in color and a little harder to come by. I'm sure the ants wouldn't care though.

Are we doing a Meetup this month? Or are we gonna save it for Global Reddit Meetup day? by mastermegabytein RioGrandeValley

[–]cr0n1c 2 points3 points ago

Me and the wifey have had that idea (fishing) for a reddit meetup. It wouldn't necessarily be this month. Well, actually it won't be for this month since we have so much going on and we were going to set it up. I say save it for the meetup in June.

Hey I use Linux Mint. I'm not a huge fan, but it works. Also, I don't understand a lot about Linux anyways, so it's probably better than I think it is.

In McAllen For 3 Months - What Do I Do? by spandemoniumin RioGrandeValley

[–]cr0n1c 2 points3 points ago

First off.

Secondly, welcome!

Thirdly, you need friends, like now. You mentioned that you don't like doing things by yourself. Well that may be hard in the beginning and I travel a bit so I can't really help you there. But I'm sure something will come up. Do you have co-workers down here?

If you like quiet, you may want to try Moonbeans Coffee. It looks pretty chill.

Well, where do I start? Is this thing on?! I am the cr0n1c, coo coo ca choo! 32 years young. Chemical Engineer and long time Redditor, but I've only been active in the past few years. I've lived in Texas all my life, including bits and pieces in College Station, Longview, Dallas, Houston and now back to the Valley. I didn't think I'd ever return, but since I've returned, I love it. My family is here and most importantly, my beautiful wife. We love to travel and we consider it a hobby of ours. I travel with work quite a bit too, but mostly in the great state of Texas. I'm a PC Gamer, but I love all gaming systems. Even more so, I'm a retro gamer and I like to reminisce back on my days at the arcade (anyone remember those things). I'm also a tech junkie and I own too many gadgets. I like to meet new people, especially all the awkward penguins on Reddit. Oh, and I like music, all kinds.

Mounted a TV over a fireplace and concealed wires with molding. How could i do it better? by xenokillain hometheater

[–]cr0n1c 2 points3 points ago*

I think it's very important to point out that you can't just cut a hole in the wall and run all your cords between the walls. If folks are asking you to do this they at least need to give you a disclaimer regarding your power cords. You cannot take any regular power cord and conceal it in your wall as it is against electrical code. Source. You need to use Romex/non-metallic wire.

You need to use a solution such as this PowerBridge product. Here's an install video.

Or, you can go with something cheaper like this from Monoprice. But the PowerBridge kit is a more complete solution with template and step-by-step instructions.

Hmmm, I appreciate what you are trying to do, but it seems like you'll need to make your own. I've had this idea before, but the closest accessory that I could think of to jump start you would be a Super Joy Box 5 Pro. But you probably already knew that.

Got new gaming video card as a suggestion from you guys, but I can't get it to work. Can anyone help?! by cr0n1cin gamingpc

[–]cr0n1c[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes that's the plan, but I can't try until I get back from a work trip. I'm actually hoping it's DOA, else I have some big issues with my current setup.

[–]cr0n1c[S] 0 points1 point ago

I actually did try this already. Still nothing. I'm thinking it's going to be DOA because my BIOS is set to only activate the onboard GPU when it cannot detect an external GPU in the PCI slot. Since the onboard GPU is the only GPU working, I'm going to assume my new card is doing something wrong. And there's nothing wrong with my PCI slot because the old card still works in that same slot.

Thanks for your advice, common sense, and practical knowledge. I'm somewhat computer-savvy but it's been several years since I've built my own PC so I'm a bit rusty.

And, yes, I was very confused by that one poster you had in question.

Just for grins, I will give it another go on my father's computer (since he has so many) but it looks like I will need to get an RMA for the card.

I did plug in both power cables for the new card. My specs were actually given in the link from my original post, but here are the nitty gritty details of my PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply 100

Ok, I removed the old drivers using the old card but I still get the same thing. With the new card, the computer randomly decides to show the POST screen after which it goes blank after a few seconds. I wouldn't say it locks up, the screen goes blank as if there is no signal, (and my monitor goes to sleep mode) but I hear everything else on the computer spinning around as usual.

Gonna have to try that when I get back from a work trip. But as far as you know, I haven't done anything incorrectly, right? Do I need to uninstall the old GeForce drivers. I don't think that matters does it?

Unless there is another way, I can't even get to the BIOS screen because the POST screen isn't even coming up.

edit: Actually, the POST screen did come up after my machine had been resting for a while, but I flailed on the "DEL" key and the BIOS screen didn't come up. The "DEL" key is the default for Gigabyte Motherboards, AFAIK.

I like the suspended monitor. Reminds me of GlaDOS. You should make the wallpaper happen.

DVD ripping questions by angryspecin htpc

[–]cr0n1c 0 points1 point ago

Well I don't use those programs at all. I got fed up awhile back with dealing with all the programs that I didn't deem as 'user-friendly'. Maybe I'm just lazy. Now I use "DVDFab Qt", more specifically their 'DVD Ripper' software that comes in the software package. I rip DVD's at around 2500 kbps bitrate into a .MKV container (H.264 codec) with uncompressed source audio. I maintain the default frame resolution and rip the English subtitles. I'm pretty happy with it. I rip to my main computer and stream to my Apple TV 2 in the living room. Files sizes are 2 to 3 GB. I don't rip Blu-rays (yet).

Actually, I misspoke, DVDFab isn't the most user friendly, but the community is up-to-date and the latest software updates have always been able to break the latest DVD encryption.

Global Reddit Meetup RGV! Details inside! by machtdhin RioGrandeValley

[–]cr0n1c 2 points3 points ago

For the lazy (message from machtdh on the redditgifts.com website):

The Global Reddit Meetup is here again and this time we will make it an awesome time for all redditors. As always I have no problems organizing it, but this time we I will need some hands to do some of the leg work to make this one the best meetup yet! Also, nothing in life is for free, so this time around I believe we need to come up with a budget and fee so every redditor can put their part into the meetup. I am not talking anything above $20/person. This would allow us to do something extra special and even cater food and drinks to the attendees.

Now what we need is IDEAS people! So please put some comments here to see what and where would be an awesome place to go!

From deeper from within the website:

It's that time of year again reddit! The third annual Global reddit Meetup Day is going to be on June 23rd and we want you to organize or attend a meetup in your neck of the woods. Last year over 4,000 people in 40 countries got together and we think this year should be even bigger and better.

FYI, to log on to the redditgifts website, you need to sign up with redditgifts and then associate your redditgifts account with your reddit username. Took 1 minute to do so.

Cool, my question is...how is the "correct" way to do this. When you go into a store that sells car radios and there are all on display in fully working condition, how are they being powered? I know there isn't a slew of PSU in the back powering them.
