TROPHY CASE

"But we have a black president" by Persaiosin antisrs

[–]cojoco 0 points1 point ago

If I had a nickel for every time a PC person implied that all minorities are criminals...

I don't think it's racist to believe that a new law is likely to disproportionately hurt non-whites.

That is not the same thing as believing that minorities are more likely to be criminals.

So how many do we see?

And they're much, much, much more energetic than normal gamma rays, aren't they?

How are they different from cosmic rays? (although I know that cosmic rays are made of lots of other things besides photons)

I find it interesting that this diagram uses the greek gamma for "photons", which is a superset of "gamma rays".

That sounds like it might also get a bit confusing sometimes.

In fact, I'm quite curious about how you even typed "ɣ" in the first place'

I searched for "unicode gamma".

I did actually find both kinds, but still wanted to ask about this, as I hadn't quite internalised the differences between the two, and your comment has helped a lot thanks.

Are there fundamental concepts that define a circlejerk post/comment? by Offensive_Statementin TheoryOfReddit

Is pleasantly chatting about stuff unrelated to the thread in question regarded as a "circlejerk" ?

No, freedom of speech really has very little to do with government at all.

Some countries regard it as a human right.

Wikipedia conspicuously talks about "those in power", not the government.

I think that the USA's free-speech amendment muddies the waters, because it is a specific embodiment of the more general idea of freedom of speech.

In the USA it's legal for corporations to censor material on their networks. However, to the extent that this removes the right to free speech, this does impinge on what many regard to be human rights.

That's just so dumb I just had to stop reading right there.

The stock market is actually a pretty small fraction of the financial system.

Why does reddit have a hypocritical attitude towards authority? by King_of_Ticksin politics

[–]cojoco 1 point2 points ago

love the government that breeds that mentality of individuals having power over others

Much of the authority that Redditors hate is wielded by corporations, for example, who have constructed a stupendously dysfunctional medical system.

It's not "government authority" vs. "corporate authority".

It's corruption, public and private, pure and simple.

Social programs can have the effect of breaking existing corporate monopolies, which can be a good thing.

Get the distinction between "public" and "private" out of your head. This is irrelevant.

The government exists currently to maintain the business models of corporations.

It's almost like some photon energy mnemic

  • Ultra-violet
  • Violet
  • Way-hiolet
  • X-rays are produced from electron collisions
  • Y-rays are produced from radioactive decay
  • Z-rays are cosmic and come along the Z-axis from the sky.

Thank you, Mr. Smarty-Pants!

Now could you answer my next question?

Up until now, I've mostly seen Latin gamma ɣ used for Gamma rays, and most maths uses latin-gamma in equations. If you used Greek gamma γ everywhere, including handwriting, it would be easily confused with Y.

So why did Nature use it here?

Anatomy of γ-ray Bursts (GRBs) by NGC300in Physics

[–]cojoco 10 points11 points ago

That figure sure looks like "X-rays" and "Y-rays" to me.

The title uses the symbol γ, which is sort-of Gamma

But Gamma looks like ɣ

Uppercase Gamma is Γ

What's happening here?

[–]cojoco 1 point2 points ago

it is about the government not suppressing any voices.

But if corporate and government power merge, all communication networks will fall under private ownership.

At this point, the question of government suppression becomes moot, because all communication will be controlled by corporations.

That potentially leaves free speech in a parlous state.

"Free speech!" - Short-term, ignorant self-interest. "I don't care who I hurt with these slurs, don't ask me to think about others when I've got something to say!"

Um, no.

Free speech is all about giving other people a voice, not using one's own voice at the expense of others.

Again, what makes you say that this fear is overstated?

I guess one piece of evidence is Michael Moore's movie, Bowling for Columbine, in which he pretty much ascribed many of the problems in US society to a surfeit of fear for one's fellow man.

To the males out there, would you be offended if... by heerusin antisrs

I think that there's a huge difference between "fat girl" and "small penis".

One is public, and one is private, and I think that makes comparisons inadequate.

Feeling a bit down, talk of suicide? BENNED! by throwawayDOXin antisrs

[–]cojoco 0 points1 point ago

My main point is that SRS encouraged a suicidal man to commit suicide.

Because of the inflammatory nature of this subject, I think it's really important to state the facts as unambiguously as possible.

Otherwise people will just start slagging each other off again.

it's also very understandable why so many women have fears about sexual assault and why they change their behavior constantly because of it.

While I cannot suggest they change their behaviour, I think I can suggest that there are a lot of fears in this modern world of ours that are overstated.

Post such as the original, which flat-out state that all women are scared of sexual assault, are untrue and in my opinion counter-productive, as they engender more fear and distrust.

Yea, but SisterOfBlackVisions, undoubtedly an SRSer, did.

Unless you know something we do not, there is little evidence for this.

What I argue against is to keep talking about this as if he DID kill himself when NO ONE here knows or has evidence that he did and continue to use the that as a fact.

I agree.

I think we need to take a step backwards.

The original post is a guy saying that he's mortified that women are abused and scared all of the time.

I respond by saying that this is not universally true.

I don't know what "data" you are talking about.
