The general dislike for France in the U.S. stems from the WWII generation and baby boomers. Right after WWII when the U.S. had liberated France, France turned its back on the U.S. via not joining NATO. And remained that way through the entire cold war. This made for a lot of bitter feelings. That being said, I have been to Paris three times and Normandy on Veteran's Day and had a great time. I never had any issues with "rude French people" either.
