Facts and the Inequality of Opinion by aidrocsidin atheism

yes, even simple math.

This doesn't mean that 2+2 = 5. It means that there are multiple ways to get at 2+2 = 4. Such as 2 = 1+1, so (1+1) + (1+1) = 4. This is an extremely simple example, but you get the idea.

In the case of math, there is only a single answer. In the case of non-math, there are multiple possible answers and you are trying to get the best guess. If you arrive at a similar answer through multiple means, then that is good for your answer. If you are getting different answers, then you need to bring in other methods.

To understand anything well at all you have to come at it from multiple perspectives. All OPEN perspectives are equal, in that every open perspective should be considered.

Religion is quite closed, however.

Let's not ask ourselves why young people are rejecting religion. Instead let's make broad negative assumptions about their character. by mcelectricchairin atheism

Other than the reference to sin, there was nothing wrong with the article. This in particular struck me as wholly unreligious, and certainly counter-culture:

"Smith and company are stunned, for example, that the interviewees were so completely untroubled by rabid consumerism. (This was the summer of 2008, just before the crash)."

It had a religious bend, sure... but nothing to get too upset about.

True!

I know... not valid because it is not legal to square both sides if they are not defined equal to each other. I can imagine myself saying this as a student though.

It's actually a good strategy. Black Bears have 10 times more nerve endings in their nose than are in the human testicle!

Cynical: bitterly or sneeringly distrustful, contemptuous, or pessimistic.

hatred and anger are pretty intimately tied to cynicism...

Have you ever listened to or read Sam Harris?

Calling all past insight "crap" is cynicism indeed.

All "knowledge" per say, from our perspective, is because of where we sit. Because of the ideas that we hold valuable.

Greater than your skepticism. Even if you think "oh, it's not REALLY true that all that I am is what I have thought", you still let it guide you. You still hold it as true for a day and see what meaning it brings.

Absolutely agree, and yet I think that some people will be hostile to even this suggestion.

Edit: The goal is not to put any lesser value on trying to get religion out of society. It is about making religion secular. Making religion about ideas and worldview -- which is what it really is imo.

DOWNVOTED, you took this massively out of context. I agree that River's point of view is funny, but the Shepherd's is equally valid. Immediately afterwards he says:

"It’s not about making sense. It’s about believing in something and letting that belief be real enough to change your life. It’s about faith. You don’t fix faith, River. It fixes you."

I am an atheist, but I still understand the importance of this. Every day (shortly after watching this episode actually) I take a verse from the Buddha or the bible or the Quran -- or any other repository of knowledge and let it guide me that day. The important thing is NOT whether the statement is true or false, it is where it can lead your consciousness.

Take this statement by the Buddha: "All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him, as a wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage.

...

If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him."

Is this statement true? Does it MATTER, for the course of that day whether it is true?

The goal is to let an outside idea guide your perspective. That is what Shepherd Book is talking about, and you completely cut it out.

Intel announce "a historic innovation": 3-D Tri-Gate transistors ready for production by CmdrSammoin technology

[–]cloudform511 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Intel explains, "The additional control enables as much transistor current flowing as possible when the transistor is in the 'on' state (for performance), and as close to zero as possible when it is in the 'off' state (to minimize power), and enables the transistor to switch very quickly between the two states (again, for performance)."[9]"

So it's not really that much of an innovation. What we really need is a gate with three states, instead of just two. THAT would be "3D"

They are not in different spheres necessarily, because morality should be part of science as well at this day in age. You should read Sam Harris's book "The Moral Landscape"
