Based on your ability to reverse-troll me, I am certain you are a nightmare to work with. As a result, though, I am super impressed at how much bigger of a douchebag you are than I.

I'm 29 -- I've been working at some level in the industry for 10 years (counting internships and whatnot), and have been an engineer for 7 of those. During that time I've had the opportunity to work with developers much smarter and much stupider than myself. Given the magical ability to do so, there is only one type of engineer I would get rid of, and you are it. You can try and brush it off all you want, but I will stick to working with other engineers who actually respect what other people on the team think. The only reason I DON'T respect what engineers like you think is because they've already made it clear they are not interested. More often than not, they are Java developers, although I have seen people of that mindset in basically every language. Thankfully they are usually the minority.

Sorry, not interested in what you do. That said, I never claimed that Java doesn't work. In the very first place I said I hate the mentality and have no interest in what you think. And I even specifically said I was trolling from a personal perspective -- I thought it was pretty clear that I contribute to FUD about Java because I dislike Java coders on a personal level and don't like how they work. That doesn't come from ignorance, it comes from a deeply held belief that engineers should discuss first, and work second. Out of all the coders I've worked with, I think more than any other, coders who use Java seem to think that they are entitled to never have to communicate with anyone else on the team. I'm not saying that prevents good code -- obviously we all use tools written in Java every day -- I'm saying that I would throw out everything ever done in Java if only to get rid of that kind of engineer. Feel free to fill in as much factual evidence as you like about the benefits of Java, I won't stop you.

I'm sure you've worked on some very large projects. I'm also certain I am wiser and more intelligent than you, even though you may very well be a better engineer. Most importantly, I'm not denying that interpreted languages fall down when you start talking about a service the size of google. That is still astronomically large, however. clone out

Unless they have sold off control of their principle works (which I admit, is common), they always have the option of leaving a label that uses their work in a way they don't want -- assuming they aren't still paying off predatory advances from the labels. Moreover, Spotify's reported gross revenues of $85 million dollars in 2010, so some people are clearly paying for it. Of that, $65 million went to artists and labels.

Also I mean fine, fundamentally I believe people are good; you can believe otherwise, but it doesn't convince me. I guess I just live in a fantasy microcosm. All the people I know who pirate are huge music fans who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars a year on vinyl, streaming services, concerts etc.

You're arguing in circles. My only point is that given a system that works the way people want and provides content at a price they are willing to pay, they will use that service instead of pirating. Therefore when piracy is rampant it is usually a very good indicator that there is no available offering priced at a level people would reasonably pay for said service. Moreover, no one is forcing artists to put their content on streaming services, yet they continue to do so, with notable exceptions.

I'm currently a senior developer for image serving and content entitlement and curation on a service written in Python. Although we have not launched yet, our load testing scales to the several million user mark. We utilize Atlassian tools for CI, package management and deployment which, as you may know, rely on some very straightforward configuration files.

Sorry but Java is just not the only game in town, even for roflscale.

It's my experience that Java is preferred by guys who can't manage to conceptualize Enterprise scale software on their own and need it broken down into pieces they can fit in their brains.

[–]clone00 0 points1 point ago

Sort of. My experience with it is that some engineers who would call themselves "java guys" pride themselves on the fact that interoperability between different parts of their code is so abstracted that there is no clear definition of what the sum of the program does. For simple tasks the overhead becomes exceedingly pointless. For large projects, I understand the impetus and the necessity of having this kind of pattern, but it fosters the mentality that coders on a team should remain isolated in their own little corner of the project and never try to understand what other people on the team are doing.

Again let me reiterate that since this started as a Java troll thread, my original comment was intentionally oversimplified and vitriolic in order to piss off people who work in Java. I suppose it worked.

Your second point is just wrong. If that supposition were true, explain Steam and explain why services like Spotify, Rdio and Mog are rapidly gaining steam, and revenue.

Also, same to you as to lol_whut. Way to dump all your baggage onto what was pretty clearly an insightful troll. You mean to tell me you've never worked with programmers who only work in Java/Ant/Maven and are super vocal about how it is the best stack because no one needs to talk to each other or understand the codebase because all portions of the project are assembled by some giant soup of XML documents? That's the only kind of "java guy" I was speaking of. I find that behavior so abhorrent that I would just throw out Java and everyone who works in it, even the good engineers.

Yeah sorry, I came here for the lulz but then the other people who responded to me got all butthurt and I replied all at once.

My original comment explicitly says that I don't want anyone who uses Java anywhere near me and irrationally eschew it. The fact that you immediately attribute criticisms or explicit trolling to ignorance makes it pretty obvious you are an inexperienced, or talent-less engineer. They are typically the ones who won't even, in jest, point out the shortcomings of a particular type of engineer, because they overestimate their own skillset.

To be more explicit, I am speaking specifically of guys who pidgeonhole themselves and ONLY work with Java/Ant/Maven and spend all their time talking about how it's the superior stack because you don't actually need to know what anything else is doing in order to code into it -- everything is assembled by some horrifying maven XML soup document. I guess you haven't spent enough time in the industry to come across these "java guys".

That's not practicality that is utilitarian. It's the same line of thought that could end with someone setting the value of human life at the market value of a body's constituent chemicals.

Coding dozens of tiny interoperable bits that interact in some kind of nebulous "factory". I was just here for java troll upvotes anyway, don't get your over engineered panties in a bunch.

As a python and perl programmer i personally believe and promote all negative news about java because honestly I don't want anyone who thinks "the java way" to succeed. I'm not looking for coroberation, I just am being honest -- you guys are like a cancer to a programmer who thinks people should be able to conceptualize the entire stack.

You are fucked without a lawyer to deal with it up front. If you let them put this on you, there is no recourse because cannot bring a civil action against the state for damages. I once had my bumper of my parked car creamed by a municipal truck. It was ADMITTED it was their fault. I still had to pay for it with my own insurance.

You're talking to the wrong guy. The simple fact is that the studios are intentionally standing in the way of competitive distribution networks. Netflix is an incredible example. The one thing the studios fear more than anything else is a competitive digital distribution market where they do not have total control over everything that is available to major audiences.

The fact is, even if this fellow WANTED to pay for his movies in a timely manner, he is denied that ability because the studios insist on propping up the physical distribution model, of which they all own major stakes. This allows them to double and triple dip on the revenues in the industry and more or less enjoy a total monopoly on distribution. I recommend you watch the documentary This is Not Yet Rated which interviews many famous directors specifically on the subject of how the majors fund the MPAA and use it as a tool to discriminate against alternate content.

As a member of the entertainment industry, I see all of this first hand. The fact is, that piracy accounts for a fraction of a % of the majors' total perceived profits. The facts suggest that pirates would never or in most cases actually CANNOT legitimately purchase the media, and therefore the revenue is imaginary -- they never would've had it in the first place. The real people being injured are independent content creators and competing distributors like Netflix, oh but not by pirates, but by the major studios.

Right it's got absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the studios REFUSE to abandon their outdated, oldschool, physical publishing based model, and deal with the fact that their margins will be slightly lower when they move to a uniform digital distribution system where their content is made available universally at the same time.

It's insane to me to see people just swallow the major studios' line that piracy is hurting the artists or content creators. The simple fact is that this is not true at all. The one fundamental thing that the studios are afraid of is a competitive distribution market where they do not own pieces of all the distributors, publishers and rating agencies, allowing them to double and triple dip on all segments of the industry.

Since piracy is digital, they are using piracy as a rallying call for maintaining their monopoly. Despite the fact that piracy amounts to a fraction of a percent of their revenues they THINK they would receive, but facts suggest that pirates would never have bought the movie in the first place. The studios know this and they are banking on your ignorance to protect their bottom line.
