A response to Jeff Atwood's "Please Don't Learn to Code" by nullnullnullin programming

[–]cijdl584 4 points5 points ago

You hit it right on the nail. The way I was bred to code, I first learned the basics of a language, then got into algorithms and problem solving, then later got into more language specific details. This way I retained my passion for coding, which really is about creativity. IMO, if you start trying to merge open source repositories and hack js over multiple platforms before you learn the beauty of recursion or dynamic programming, you're going to have a bad time.

I found Atwood's original article misguided. There are tons of intangibles that go into the process of learning to code -- it teaches logical thinking, mental multitasking, long term and short term planning, community contribution, and generally makes you a more intelligent, more deep-thinking person. I sort of see his point, which is that not everyone should be churning out production code that is distributed and used by a lot of people, but when people say "I'm going to learn how to code" they mean it the same way they say "I'm going to learn how to cook". It's strictly self-improvement, and I support it 100%.

I think if you go by common sense you'll be fine. I'm sure laundry detergent has some properties that can damage finer fabrics, but for regular clothes it's no big deal. Just wash it if you've been through a sweaty day or it smells or looks discolored.

For me it's fairly tight fit, but not so tight that you're straining the fabric.

Okay, I sort of lied. I know cambridge better than boston. Goodwill in central is the obvious choice, but Boomerangs is right across the street, has tiny selection but you're much more likely to get something good. Garment district (2nd floor, the first floor pile is disgusting) is interesting because it's technically more expensive than usual thrift stores (maybe $10-$15 items on average), but has a much bigger designer label selection.

Holy crap, great tip, I almost forgot about this! I went home last month just to steal my dad's wardrobe. I remember suggesting that there should be a family tradition where the dad or mom lets their kid root around their closet when they graduate college (about the age when kids realize their parents don't have completely hopeless fashion senses)
