Glass blowers in the San Diego area. by tskrilla618in glassheads

[–]chernn 0 points1 point ago

Hands down: Glassworks in PB. They have lots of high end pieces from local blowers, mostly in higher price ranges though. If you care about quality and artistic value over price, this is your shop.

How does as messy a concept as Yahoo Axis get all the way to completion? by puffinpunchin web_design

[–]chernn 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. Google had thumbnail hover previews (as an optional feature) years ago. And many sites had it before that. Google Chrome also already has the exact same thumbnail previews GUI that Yahoo is offering now.

It looks nice, but theres nothing innovative about it.

Sorry if that sounded sketchy. The reason I ask is I used to know this guy that rolled exactly like that, perfect cone every time.

Why hasn't Communism ever suceeded? by Liberal_Jewin DebateaCommunist

[–]chernn -5 points-4 points ago

It is important to note that the same concentration of power and corruption also happens in the capitalist society for much of the same reasons, that is, the rise of an elite ruling class.

Correct, as long as you're not implying that the concentration of power and corruption are at all comparable to that of a capitalist country.

Why hasn't Communism ever suceeded? by Liberal_Jewin DebateaCommunist

[–]chernn 0 points1 point ago

There's a subtle dynamic that I think you're missing, which also happens to be one of Marx's most interesting ideas. The idea is that any capitalist society eventually turns into a socialist one through populism. So if you take a country with a completely free market, put enough people in it and wait long enough, eventually that country will cease to be free.

What's unique about this process is that it only moves one way: capitalist countries always gradually become more socialist, but socialist countries have to experience a collapse before they become capitalist. The corollary to this is that the process is not reversible: once you start down the "road to serfdom" (to quote Hayek), the only way you can go is forward.

Can you have socialism/communism and retain a market mechanism? by jbenunivin DebateaCommunist

[–]chernn 0 points1 point ago

That's a fascinating idea, thankyou for taking the time to explain.

So say I wanted to start a factory in an abandoned warehouse, would I be free to do so? What if the property was already in use by someone else?

Does mutualism only make property communal, leaving goods to the market? What about houseboats or RV's?

Thanks, but this is a bit esoteric for me. I get that industrializing England was not laissez faire, but what is the difference between actual free markets and mutualism? Is mutualism more akin to a welfare state?

For that kind of money you're not looking at much custom code, more likely a bunch of pre-made components put together. However, for that kind of money your developer should not be using wordpress.

Look for Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP ("LAMP") devs, they are in my experience the easiest to find. As a plus, developers in this environment are often familiar with the front end stuff like XHMTL/CSS/Javascript as well.

Ruby on rails, python, perl, and ASP.net developers can all do what you need, but since you're going to be using fairly common features (forum, user registration, ...) then personally I'd go with a LAMP stack for its ubiquity.

Overall, just look for someone who can do BOTH front (HTML, CSS, Javascript) and back (PHP or ASP or Python or Perl or Java or Node.JS) end.

Encourage your site visitors to leave IE 6 and 7 behind with new cloudflare app by kexekin webdev

[–]chernn 0 points1 point ago

I used it for a recent project. We ended up abandoning it after 2 months for Amazon Route 53.

Pros:

  • Seriously awesome interface
  • Excellent support, quick response time

Cons:

  • We consistently ran into major issues with Cloudflare, mostly caching stuff (their servers seem to take over some caching even if you disable it through their control panel).
  • Cloudflare caused AJAX requests to fail randomly, which at times seriously affected our UX
  • Cloudflare is very intrusive by default - it will mess with all of your caching, content-type, and other headers.
  • Their DNS also slowed our site down noticeably (with a baseline of 1and1). It also preforms worse than Route 53.
  • Intermittent downtime (rare, but up to 20 mins at a time)

CF will be a great DNS host after more development, but at the moment it feels like an unfinished product. On the other hand Route 53 is completely transparent, and gives a bit more control over settings than CF (at the expense of features).

I'm not familiar with situations elsewhere, but in major cities in the USSR this was done on a massive scale back in the early-mid 20th century.
