[Build Help] AMD Phenom II X4 vs. FX-8150 Zambezi vs. ?? by ian25oconnorin buildapc

[–]cesiumk 1 point2 points ago

While the AMD Phenom II X4 processors were awesome price-to-performance wise when they came out and were even comparable to the Intel's early i5 series and even the lower end i7s... that was in 2009. Intel i5 2500k or 3570k is where you want to be at that price point.

[Build Help] Deciding between the Samsung Spinpoint F3 and the WD Caviar Black by beamoflaserin buildapc

[–]cesiumk 0 points1 point ago

I have 3 Spinpoint F3s and and 2 Caviar Blacks each 1tb. In testing, I was a little surprised to find that two Samsung F3s bench about 8 to 12 MBps faster than my two WD Caviar Blacks in Raid 0 transfer rates. I would imagine as a single drive though the opposite is true.

Thoroughly enjoyed SW: Galactic Battlegrounds, though it came out at an unfortunate time when the market was over saturated with RTS games.

One question, is this going to be closer to Wing Commander or Descent Freespace?

Grappling hook, Just Cause 2. At least as much fun with physics using that as the gravity gun in HL2.

Is it just me, or is it about damn time that these become a reality? by PossibleAnomalyin gaming

[–]cesiumk 88 points89 points ago

Despite what the picture shows, seeing these in reality were disappointing for a couple of reasons:

  • You could see seams where the panels were places together and it really stands out on a gradient or even solid color background.
  • Also this may be solvable by LED based displays but the three I saw had very uneven lighting throughout as evident in reason 1.
  • Prohibitively expensive.

What 'lesser known' game do you think you've poured more hours into than anyone else? by Pinbenterjaminin Games

[–]cesiumk 0 points1 point ago

Spectromancer, more hours into it than any other game on my 150+ title Steam catalogue.

Something about the ability to be up and running where you left off in a game in less than 10 seconds. It autosaves after every turn so even when I close the window in frustration it loads back up right where I left off making me think through the strategy and come up with feints rather than just cheap tactics.

The Saboteur has plenty of explosive mayhem, though the PC version was poorly coded. The voice acting in it isn't bad. If you're unfamiliar it's GTA themed with WW2 French Resistance.

Because they want something to differentiate themselves from all the other Apple users. Also they can call it an "indie project". Also it cost a lot more so they can feel better about themselves and their purchase. Essentially it's a hipsters wet dream.

Could we have a detailed(unbiased) discussion on the merits of the PC-Console War? by ThatGuyYouKindaKnowin Games

[–]cesiumk 0 points1 point ago

Even though relating the two mediums through biased takes and personal anecdotes is hardly grounds for the phrase 'War', I believe it is the symbiotic relationship the two have that is responsible for the hostilities. Historically, consoles by and large have been a distilled PC gaming experience. They eliminate most of the tweaking, customization and freedom that made classic PC gaming thrive. They then packaged that product into a more marketable distribution. When the publisher/developer has a bit more control. They can then spend more money on marketing that package to the lowest common denominator instead of trying to appease the more discriminating classic computer geek.

This cycle continues for a few generations and comes to dominate. At some point the that product makes it way back to PC gaming (which in the mean time has since moved on to different types of games that simply don't work on consoles). When compared to status quo on PC, the games just don't feel the same. Corners are cut and compromises made for the console audience and play style. And while that's unfortunate, it reaches the widest audience and makes the most money that way.

Luckily, there has been a rise of several new indie platforms that cater to this audience that feels ripped off, allowing them to revitalize gaming on PC and give it a feel many PC gamers haven't experienced in a decade. While this helps, there's still a feeling (even if irrational) of betrayal and disregard for the fans of PC gaming that allowed console gaming to exist in the capacity it does today. The case for this is seen with taking classic PC IPs and recreating them on consoles and then running the series into the ground due to the way the lowest common denominator consumes media. Especially when you see some mod that was popular on PC as a custom setting for a game. Some studio will then take that concept that is poplar because of it's success on PC and then distill it for console play-style. At some point, it will return to the PC with a big budget and high production values, but still feel empty due to the way it's ported.

I guess the moral of the story is that while, comparing things to the past it may seem bleak for PC Gaming. Looking to the future there are plenty of new and innovative things on both PC and Console to look forward to.

TL;DR - When you take a square peg and then round the corners off to make a circle, you find that putting that circle back into the square hole doesn't fit right and feels wrong.

Trading Card Games for PC? by PokemasterTTin Games

Battleforge... kinda. It uses cards and decks to form armies for an RTS. In a way it more belongs on this list than Spectromancer as in Battleforge you can actually trade the cards with other players. This may be off topic however.
