How to get to DC? by king_kong123in Delaware

[–]ccommack 1 point2 points ago

Most trains blow right through Newark; only a couple a day stop there. In the likely event that the schedule doesn't work for you, drive to Perryville, MD for the MARC commuter train (weekdays), or Wilmington or Aberdeen, MD, for Amtrak (weekends). I think every Amtrak train on the schedule stops at Wilmington, and most Northeast Regionals also stop at Aberdeen. MARC is significantly cheaper, though.

cheapest way to get from Phila to MT by classicalthunderin philadelphia

[–]ccommack 0 points1 point ago

If OP is willing to mix modes, probably the best option is to fly to a large airport like MSP, Denver, SLC, or Seattle, where there's competition from multiple large airlines and the fares are cheap, then take Greyhound from there. Flying into small airports is asking to get price-gouged.

I presume /r/Montana probably has people who have actually solved this problem from the other side...

Philadelphia's Subway Trains Are Becoming Rolling Power Factories by CthulhuCompanionCubein philadelphia

Hmm, starts out by talking about the El and the Subway, then starts in on the Silverliner Vs (regional rail). Can we get a link to someone who knows what they're talking about and not a Gawker Media stenographer?

More expensive to maintain than trains built in the Kennedy Administration? You're joking, right? The Silverliner IIs and IIIs have given long and honorable service; it's time to let them go.

Streetcar Suburbs by BrownieMcGheein urbanplanning

[–]ccommack 1 point2 points ago

You have a lot in the outer neighborhoods and inner suburbs of Philadelphia, although the line between streetcar suburbs and railroad suburbs tends to be blurry at best. For really close adherence to type architecturally, I would say Media, PA comes closest (here's the view down State St.) for places that still have their service; Drexel Hill, closer in on the same line, is more of a suburb in that it's more Philadelphia-oriented, and less self-contained than Media, but its commercial corridors tend not to be on top of the trolley line.

Philadelphia School District Announces its Dissolution by brilliantNumberOnein philadelphia

[–]ccommack 1 point2 points ago

The Catholic system is in nearly as dire shape; in East Falls, the elementary school parents are being faced with the choice of being consolidated into a school in Manayunk, or fleeing to the neighborhood public elementary, Thomas Mifflin, and a lot of parents are picking Mifflin or at least considering it seriously.

Then again, East Falls =/= representative of Philadelphia, and they would probably be first to tell you that.

NOx is an even more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2, so it's not really a trade-off.

I presume that, at least as far as taxation goes, no matter what jurisdiction applies in space, the universal jurisdiction the US claims over its own citizens will be sufficient to bring this venture under American tax laws.

ELI12 version: (couldn't quite get it down to ELI5)

Your gasoline- or diesel-powered car, assuming you own one, has quite a bit of platinum (or, in newer car, palladium and rhodium) in an object called a catalytic converter. This is attached to your exhaust pipe, forward of your muffler, and does two things to make the gases coming out less toxic to humans: it lets carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons react completely with the oxygen in the air, to produce carbon dioxide and water, and breaks nitrous oxides (NOx) down into nitrogen and oxygen. Now, CO2 isn't the best stuff in the world, but it's not as kill-you-immediately toxic as CO or NOx. CO and NOx break down naturally over time, but far too slow for comfort if you're asthmatic and downwind of a highway. Platinum and the other rare elements speed up the reactions that break down the nasty stuff, so a catalytic converter takes your car exhaust and runs it through a wire mesh or other high-surface-area form, so that the only major pollutant coming out of your car is CO2. (CO and NOx are still present, but much less than they would be otherwise.)

If you're wondering why thieves don't just steal catalytic converters, well, they do; it's one of the most profitable parts of a car, for car thieves and legitimate scrapyards alike. Usually it's not quite accessible enough to be stolen while parked on the street without taking the rest of the car with it, though.

The UK has no problem understanding "falls", it's only my fellow Americans, who are unused to the workings of democracies, who are confused.

The article doesn't focus on it, but there are lots of >100 year old, abandoned mill dams in my part of the country, which could presumably be put back to work as small-scale hydro. The key is dealing with the micro-level scale.

Why not leave the content free and charge for commenting? Worst case scenario is that the comments are still Stormfront-on-the-Delaware, but at least they're paying money to keep local journalism alive.

George Zimmerman is going to be charged in Trayvon Martin shooting, law enforcement official says by reddit4in politics

[–]ccommack -1 points0 points ago

The 911 tapes do not support Zimmerman's version of events, or are too ambiguous to make a determination. The cops described Zimmerman's record as "squeaky clean", either not knowing or not caring (very unlikely) about his prior arrest for "battery of a law enforcement officer", which is usually the sort of thing that gets a second look from fellow cops, so the more likely scenario is that they didn't run a proper records check on Zimmerman. There was no medical examination of Zimmerman's injuries, to determine if they were consistent with defensive wounds, and no photographs taken for future reference. There is still no explanation, from Zimmerman or anyone else, for why Zimmerman got out of his car (negating his tactical advantage if nothing else), or why Martin would attack a man who had 10 years and 100 pounds on him without provocation. And the Sanford PD seems to have taken no action to identify Martin even after he had been in their morgue for hours.

Basically, the investigation as conducted by the Sanford PD did not live up to minimum standards of competence.

George Zimmerman is going to be charged in Trayvon Martin shooting, law enforcement official says by reddit4in politics

[–]ccommack 0 points1 point ago

The thing that people have been protesting is that the Sanford PD botched the investigation, basically going out of their way to not do the most basic steps beyond taking Zimmerman at his word that he was acting in self-defense. And it's not like they didn't have the opportunity; Trayvon Martin was shot in February, and it didn't become a big national media thing until late March. And it's not like they couldn't have done basic things like administering a Breathalyzer to Zimmerman the night of the shooting, and still had him home before midnight had they wanted to. What is revolting to the conscience is that a boy was killed and the local Police decided it wasn't their problem.
