Price isn't my main driver. Although I use mine as a media server, it's also a media gatherer, a backup hoster, and an automated home driver (via X10 and the serial Firecracker interface).

So, I do need a more general purpose computer (and my specific needs warrant a well supported-ish Linux distro; although I supposed windows would /work/, it's not ideal for my use). And I don't need a physical screen nor a keyboard, although the ability to use a KB would be nice.

For you, maybe. I have a crappy laptop serving as my media collector/server right now (sickbeard, subsonic, couchpotato, sabnzbd, pytivo, headphones), and would love to replace it with something like this. Low power, low heat, small operating space.

Been waiting for something like this for a while; pogoplug, etc. might also work, but that's more or less in the same class as these things.

WIred tethering usually uses a different app than WIFI, unless you use your ROM's built in; but even then it's a different option.

I've used this in the past, and as Sip_py said, PDANet (or easyTether) are also options if you don't need HTTPS. I believe they both support HTTPS in the non-free version, but I've not used either in some time so check that to be sure.

I agree with you both; although I haven't had this problem, there is something wrong with that app. I have seen this issue on reddit too many times to be a solely user issue.

There is some unwarranted hate towards it, however.
