How does r/equality feel about Male Genital Mutilation? by [deleted]in Equality

Well thank you, I think that it is hardly the best way to learn from someone if either party has negative expectations of reciprocity. I recognized that just from the get go it was a topic with more than what I'd knowledge of and was simply offering my feelings on the matter, as it was asked. I claim only my own experiences.
In further response I was talking with a delightful older woman today and she brought out the point I was continually thinking of. Language. The power of language is incredible. Victim is a powerful, powerful use of that language and it is used, albeit correctly in definition, for all manner of purposes. Mutilation, is a powerful word. Am I truly a mutilated individual? To what purpose is it that I need to begin calling myself mutilated? I already recognize the practice as misguided, even as you have continued to provide evidence of, (and I read the website in entirety as to the proofs of mgm and why it is so negative, it was very informative, thanks!) But, /the point remains that as misguided a practice mgm may remain, it does not have the same disempowering effect as fgm. I know that it has the trappings of a double standard but the real atrocity of mutilation is fgm. Yes, mgm must be addressed, and of course it is excessive, but to really compare the two forms of mutilation, compare them in your country. In your society. If you live in America, as I do, then you may recognize that mgm is not rare and fgm is almost unheard of. It is a federal crime, under 18. It is recognizably negative and punished as such. In other cultures it is far more wide spread and these cultures use it to an end that is far, far different from the purposes of mgm in both our culture and other cultures. Islam is a hot, hot topic in my town and so is feminism. Women who have fgm do not just have fgm, but a whole suite of societal repressions. This is the crux of the matter. The matter cannot equate fgm to mgm. They are both mutilation but in very different scenarios. That is why this question is such a difficult question. My personal equation is that the maddening proportions of the ensuing gender equality issues from fgm vs mgm in terms of why they are mutilation isn't simply a physical issue but an issue addressing inequality and repression.

Anyways, thanks for the facts. I hope that does clarify why this issue is so difficult to have an easy answer on. I'm sort if this is at all long winded or repetitive but I am in the middle of finals and can really only devote so much of my time to editing web chatter from my phone. Cheers!

*edit also, yes Sexuality in the USA is messed up but mgm is a part of a different suite of sexuality issues. It is indefensible but but much more easily solved. You managed to make an argument reasonably enough and I was convinced that circumcision was wrong. But it isn't as simple as addressing circumcision as mgm, and will assume you know that. But America's issues of sexuality are changing with the death of the family in America. Really I doubt that circumcision will manage to last if any effort is put into it with half the gumption you did, but wider scale. Fgm...is another story.

Hmm. Yeah, that's pretty convincing. I forgot to mention that I don't approve of circumcision in my original statement. I also apologize of it came across as me calling you anything. When I say that I would feel like my white guilt is doing something I mean it. My white guilt would make me feel that.
Honestly I hadn't even heard of the level of complications you just linked to. My main contention with this is that I have heard so much more negativity surrounding fgm and that fgm has a different purpose. That is where I would still differ even as my mind has changed from calling mgm circumcision.
I have a question. Are they equal in your eyes, fgm and mgm, in their intent and outcome? I'm not an asshole just fighting you about this, I am honestly curious as to if they really are on the same level? I'm about 50/50 here. Part of me says that a crime is being perpetrated against an unconsenting child and it is mutilation and it is misguided under the best of circumstances, but the other side of me mentions that patriarchal societies are using fgm in a totally different way than mgm. Am I incorrect in such an assumption? That is still my reservation, that one is not the same as the other in the projected intent. I probably cannot reconcile intent ( mutilation is mutilation no matter the intent), but I do agree that circumcision is mutilation.
Hmm. Interesting. Well, thanks.

Divided and not easily answered point of pondering. Do I think of the process as MGM? I begin with myself. On my own behalf I would never call myself mutilated because I was circumcised, as it would be a discredit to my parents beliefs and to fgm. It simply is offensive to begin with correcting someone with a phrase like mutilation and doesn't add to the correction of a misguided practice. Terminology alienates if the usage goes against a populations notions of how they have long practiced their beliefs. Mutilation, as it has been readily defined in these discussions, has all the tenets of the definition. But what of me? I respect my parents practices. An attempt to define what they did to me out of belief or tradition is a part of their value system, not something I can change. Am I to call myself a victim and a part of a wide spread mutilation of male genitalia or...will I simply recognize that making usage of this term needlessly victimizes me and creates a comparison in our culture to practices of female genital mutilation, which, one could argue, actually have an impact on a population of the world far beyond any justification of its traditional use?
If I call circumcision male genital mutilation then my white male guilt brain is trying to create a connection to wrongs perpetrated in another population with other similar traditions. I do not, but see fgm as hugely, hugely different. On your own part, go for it. Call me mutilated. I politely disagree.

Alright talked to my dad and he says that you are correct about the yogurt (wikipedia says as much) and that raw milk contains the bacteria that help produce the enzymes that make lactase. You can also eat 2 year aged cheese or beyond, but these are nontypical in an american diet.

However, if you have an actual milk allergy, this changes everything and is another topic.

So rather it is that the lactose is made more indigestable by the process of pastuerization because the enzyme creating bacteria are killed off. It should also be noted that though I am inclined to think otherwise, those who can consume lactose after a certain age are a genetic mutation, more an exception to the rule than the rule. Also it is to be noted that there are cases ranging from very mild to extreme lactose intolerance and that milk amounts consumable vary from that.

Coelic's has also a strange effect. When some folks cut back on gluten they find themselved able to drink more milk.

Anyways, hope that cleared it up. Please do ask away, I have access to a real live dairy farmer.

One of the many restrictions with food and nutrition studies is how digestable any amount of the available X there is at any given time. There are so many variables. What are you eating, are you mixing two food items, how much have you chewed, what conditions are your organs in...there is quite a list. On top of varied human body types, nutrition is a singularly hard thing to peg down as too what we actually need. As disinclined as I am to trust the raw side of things, I am willing to listen to them because they stand opposed to the popular mindset (Albeit an extreme stance) of mindless Monsanto consumption, not to mention those I have met who are on the raw diet are such incredible people. This could be another one of the manifold benifits of being themselves such happy positive thoughtful people, but it could be the diet as well.

Maybe. You can eat raw milk and its products if you are a true lactose intolerent type and not just one of the other various types of milk consumption disorders. However if the process involves a level of pasturization or homogenization then you may be out of luck. Trial and error perhaps, but at your own risk.

I am a dairy farmers son, this question has been asked of me before.

And in response to the other response, I have not heard that but will look into it. It does not seem true compared to what I have heard, for if I am thinking correctly it is the opposite of what you say that is true.

There are other ways to do it. I put my yogurt in a cooler with ball jars of boiling water to slow heat it. The internet has shown me many methods for making yogurt.

19-Yr Old Marine Killed In Afghanistan - Lance Cpl. Jacob A. Ross, 19, of Gillette, Wyo., died March 24, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. by galt1776in politics

Normally I would try to play this off as something that I can be ambivalent about and don't give a fuck about. I certainly didn't care about the war machine we give money too, nor did the names of the men and women inside of that machine.
This was before my best friend went into the marines.

I don't care what the politics are, I don't want him to die. War outside of him does not matter. The foresight to see what lies in store for the thousands of men and women who will die in the vast waste of human life we call war, I do not have that foresight. You say we. Even if this doesn't go beyond the two of us, I know that war outside of my best friend will not exist, barring war comes to my door or I to its fields, and without that this little mini dialogue we engage in is a facade of the reality of the matter, that no one will ever care about how this war goes until they are directly touched by it.

It is odd, I don't know why I have responded as such, nor why I will even keep this up instead of just deleting it. I just know that whatever you said touched a nerve, like this entire thread. I do not want for him to die nor be scarred by the machine he is in, but I am ultimately helpless.

Perhaps it is allegorical to my own struggles through life, ultimately helpless but fluttering nonetheless, a tossed butterfly in the black hole.

I know some dudes who worked there.
As long as you are cool they will usually set you up with a good time, and bring bud or alcohol. I haven't kept in contact with that crowd but it stays the same year to year with vibe.

On the other hand it is one of the most gorgeous parks in America and the trails are really sweet. The rock climbing is close to the best in the world as well. Have fun.

If you sell to a corporation like Hastings you can get up to 5 dollars for hard backs and less for paper backs. Half priced books also has decent prices. You will never break the bank selling books because of the cost...but I usually make about double for the books I buy. I've rarely sold to book shops because I typically don't have one around. There is always ebay as well, which actually might net you the most profits. I've never tried that though.

...I do believe we are working off of two different mindsets here, chap. I didn't want heroes. I am one of the fellows who vastly prefers quality of story over special effects. I don't give a damn whether it is a viable option or not to create something closer to the original for hollywood. I am very hard to please, watch few movies because of this and think that some movies are better off not made than butchered. I could get into a philosophical discussion about this with you about theft and name recognition, but I really don't think you will see where I am coming from short of a nice chat over a cupa. Which isn't likely given the internet nature of our corespondance.
