Obama May Ditch Most US Nukes: Conservatives in Congress say the president's policy is "reckless lunacy"—but military strategists think it's smart. by davidreiss666in politics

Everyone who wants the US (and the rest of the world) to keep its nukes should be forced to read Nevil Shute's On the Beach and then see if they still feel the same way...

Giant Supernova set to explode any day now, a blast so violent that its flash will briefly outshine the entire Milky Way. by Qweefin science

But in reality it might have exploded thousands of years ago; what they really mean is that we might see it exploding any day now, surely?

Normally I hate these kinds of lists (because usually they're spread over about 10 pages, and full of crap) but this one's actually really good. All my favourite covers were in there, particularly:

  • “Superman” – R.E.M.
  • “The Man Who Sold the World” – Nirvana.
  • “With a Little Help From My Friends” – Joe Cocker.
  • “Sweet Jane” – Cowboy Junkies.
  • “Twist and Shout” – The Beatles.

Agreed. I also think Rainbows End is a far lesser book than A Fire Upon the Deep. And surely SnowCrash should be there in place of Diamond Age. It's an interesting list, but a pretty idiosyncratic one, if you ask me.

[Edit: fixed weird punctuation in Rainbows End]

The BBC quote says "some is more equal than others" which is a modified version of a line from Orwell's Animal Farm. antiquated said "big endian good. little endian bad" which is a mix of quotes from Animal Farm (linking to the BBC's quote) and Swift's Gulliver's Travels. Check out the two links I gave above and you'll see the various originals.
