Where did I go wrong? by Smoke_n_Mirrorsin funny

Right. Restraint is hard, retraining your vocabulary for others is hard.

Going through that effort for another person's benefit, simply because you do not want to offend them, indicates your respect.

Which is exactly what they will do.

However, you may realize that it is a bad thing for you that those people leave you alone. There are a lot of people who are easily pissed off but can very much improve your life.

It is in your pragmatic interest to make use of all advantageous avenues. I know I've never turned away a helping hand if at all possible. Life is hard enough without enemies.

I'm talking about two things: dealing with strangers, and kids specifically.

I am not talking about you talking to your peer group which you are familiar with.

Where did I go wrong? by Smoke_n_Mirrorsin funny

[–]bradsh 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I don't. I think you're misunderstanding me. The culture I live in equates the two, but I do not. I personally don't care one way or the other whether people swear, but a lot of people do.

Ignore those others at your own peril. My point in this thread has always been this: you can pretend to be apart from the world and reject the beliefs of others, but sooner or later you will be forced to interact with these people.

So play nice, or accept the consequences. There really are no other options.

Reading comprehension. Let's review!

"While I agree that those things don't lead to pregnancy, it's still true that having a kid cursing at a young age is still a sign of a lack of respect and manners. Or maybe I'm just being an old fart."

OP believes these things don't lead to pregnancy. This indicates that this subthread has nothing to do with pregnancy. It has to do with whether cursing is a sign of disrespect and lack of manners.

You're an old fart.

pistachioshell does not believe this is the case. He believes that little tikes running around telling everyone to get fucked is respectful and indicates nothing about manners.

I think you will find in the real world, those who cuss all day long without restraint are rarely respected, and are often excluded from serious proceedings. You simply can't get away with that sort of thing when dealing with others, especially those you don't know.

I reply to indicate that this thinking is may be flawed, and will possibly lead kids to a bad place as they grow up.

Exactly! Context. But kids don't understand context.

[–]bradsh 2 points3 points ago

Does one shoot oneself in the foot to learn when to do it and when not to?

Swearing has no real benefit, I know plenty of people who never swear at all. No one ever realizes this about them until they really try to remember ever hearing them swear. So therefore, not swearing doesn't ever really hurt you socially unless you're hanging out with the most infantile of people, kind of like how not doing drugs should probably never hurt you socially.

However, swearing publicly can hurt your aspirations and future prospects. So it's a pretty clear situation with a pretty clear safe route. Swearing is not a necessity. It's an aspect of language which is neither integral nor required.

[–]bradsh 1 point2 points ago

Right, my point was that kids don't understand how to contextualize their actions in light of their audience's worldviews and morals. Therefore they should have the most mundane, universally friendly behavior possible. This will limit their ability to get themselves into trouble without understanding why. One aspect of sanitized behavior is not swearing, another aspect is "respect", etc.

By swearing in front of your teacher you were causing her a headache and possibly causing problems for yourself that you didn't fully understand.

[–]bradsh -4 points-3 points ago

You're not listening. I said:

  1. Some people are offended by swear words.

  2. Using them offends those people.

  3. You know this is the case.

  4. Purposefully offending people is a sign of disrespect. In fact, the definition of disrespect is: "lack of respect; discourtesy; rudeness."

None of these are a stretch, but if you would like to poke holes in my logic here, I invite you to do so.

Where did I go wrong? by Smoke_n_Mirrorsin funny

Swear words are bad because people continue to think them bad. Your choice to use them means you have no regard for others who are offended by them. That's fine, but it says something about you as a person -- that you don't care about many of those around you and don't respect them or their beliefs. Again, you may not believe this is true, but I can point to scores of people that do, and social acceptance is a game of statistics and mass morality, really, so it doesn't matter what you as an individual think.

Also, swearing is lazy. People often swear because they can't think of more precise language to use due to a lacking vocabulary. This is a pretty broad generalization, but I have often found that those of lower socioeconomic class tend to swear profusely no matter who they are talking to. I'm not willing to draw correlations here but I certainly wouldn't want my kids emulating that behavior. Again, broad strokes so take this one with a grain of salt.

And finally, the fact is that expressing extreme emotion is often considered to be rude, odd, and very informal. Which is probably why swear words fit into the context they fit into. But kids don't really understand this kind of contextual behavior -- they say ANYTHING to ANYONE -- which is why I say kids should not have these words in their vocabulary.

I love that this is being downvoted; it really signals the demographic shift in this site over the past few years.

Please, do provide examples of when it is appropriate for small children to cuss. Tell me about when you hear a 5 year old tell someone to fuck off and that it was totally legitimate. Tell me how you heard a 7 year old say something was shitty the other day, and they were like, so dead on about how shitty it was. Get real.

Restraint is a key factor in an individual's ability to be supremely functional and successful in society. Those without it are often left in the dust. I don't care if this belies your experience. Just because you haven't realized something doesn't make it false.

Kids lack the ability to determine when they can get away with swearing and when they can't, which means they should simply never do it.

No, it's just that there are a lot of immature people here who genuinely think they can make it far in life by being expressive and never filtering themselves, which is obviously wrong because...

Reality has not yet kicked them in the head because they are still in school and there are no stakes in their lives.

Except this is an agreement between corporations which does not involve the law.

Redditors have a hard time understanding what things are law, and what things are corporate rules. When they have rights that are being violated, and when a corporation is stopping them from using their servers to post things. A lot of people seem to have this difficulty.

Asthma inhalers are common and pretty much harmless, but life saving. The nurse should know this. It is her professional duty to know this. This is a very serious mistake.

[–]bradsh 40 points41 points ago

I'm a medical student, going to be a doctor next year. What these people did is gross negligence. The nurse should definitely know better. Asthma can be a life threatening condition; they nearly killed someone over policy. There need to be very serious repercussions here or nothing will change. It is simply unacceptable. Anyone who came anywhere near this fiasco and allowed it to happen should answer for it.

Probably not, I've been in near accidents where I was very quick to throw it in reverse (manual driver) but even then, they hit before I could disengage the clutch and ramp up the gas. Even doing it every day its hard to do fast in an emergency.
