5 Teams Targeting Oswalt, do we really want him? by O-turnin orioles

[–]bhal123 2 points3 points ago

TLDR: Yes, I think so.

My take from other posts here in r/O's is there's a consensus this team probably won't be in playoff contention come fall, but should be able to finish at or above .500. If 90+ wins gives them a shot to make the playoffs they need to find a way to win 9+ extra games with this squad. If there are legitimate options to do that they should at least give it a try. I wouldn't trade away any prospects but why not explore every other option.

I think Oswalt can be 2-3 of those wins he could be worth the one year contract. It would certainly be better money spent than the waste of money on Gonzalez and Gregg.

Add that to Zach Britton and Brian Roberts hopefully making some contributions to the team and I think they really have a chance to make a run at a wild card spot. Even if they stall out in the mid-80s in wins it would be a great season and give them a real boost for 2013.

Plus hopefully making an obvious committment to trying to win NOW will help them when they need to land a premium free agent or two in the coming years.

Edit: Good read here: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/orioles-should-aggressively-pursue-oswalt/

Technically it's 25% easier to make the playoffs and 100% easier to get a wild-card spot.

Edit: Another way of looking at it would be to see the Red Sox would have won a wild card last year with one more win, but under this year's rules they would have won a wild card with up to three less wins. So four wins easier out of 91 to win the single wild card last year or 4.4% easier.

Another edit: 2011 was a particularly low win total for the wild card winner. The average from 2006-2011 is 6.3%.

Both were 26-15. For the '05 O's 30-16 was the high point and things went progressively downhill after that. Here is a summary of the painful memories. Let's just hope this year is different.

Agree with most of the info here but I'd go with CarGo because of the age difference plus I'd prefer Wainwright to Hudson.

I feel a little guilty about this but for the sake of accuracy: Closest Game was Red Sox over Diamondbacks 235.0-234.5 on a Kenley Jansen save on the last pitch of the week.

As great as Wieters is, in this situation it was the super play by Hardy that got the out. The throw only beat Harper by so much because he got a terrible jump from first.

Those are good points. I'll have to think about how I'm using my roster. I know I have three 3B with Middlebrooks, although he's going back down in a few days most likely.

Allowing the catcher to "cover" the plate is also a bad rule. Why not just have the same rules at home as at all the other bases? The fielder can't fully block the base and the runner has to stay in the baseline. Having the different rules at home is what causes the injuries from collisions.
