Tape lives! Supercomputer to be built with 380PB of tape storage by DrJulianBashirin hardware

Slave-drivers, hand tools, food, water, waste removal (so as to optimize their life-span by reducing diseases), shelter, etc... suddenly everything's not so free, huh?

Mark Zuckerberg saved $111m by selling Facebook shares before stock slumped by hot_coffeein technology

[–]barryicide 4 points5 points ago

I invested about 18,000 and was hoping to have at least twice as that come xmas time

No offense, but wow... you're bad at investing.

Facebook has no long-term large-scale profitability.

GM pulled their ads (one of the few actual corporate accounts facebook has) because they deemed them "ineffective": http://www.forbes.com/sites/joannmuller/2012/05/15/gm-says-facebook-ads-dont-work-pulls-10-million-account/

Other companies are beating them to the personalized-ad punch, especially with mobile devices which are the "next gen" market (and a place where Facebook currently struggles). Facebook ads are not making them enough money and Facebook ads that are more intrusive will push users away (for a case study, look at Myspace).

Facebook's strength is in its userbase and personal information... unfortunately for them, they can't do much with Europeans' information because of privacy laws; that leaves the U.S. as the target for data mining... but any amount of non-trivial data mining will drive the entire user base away.

Anyone who can use the internet that didn't understand that Facebook was horribly overvalued is a oblivious.

Man rents gun at local range and commits suicide. by itsme_timdin guns

[–]barryicide 0 points1 point ago

That's a given, but I was speaking in terms of direct impact. Everyone dies, so if you die by your own hand... nothing's different. If you purposefully die by your own hand while creating a terrible mess for others to clean up (or drive your car head-on into another car, etc), you are a dick.

It already exists.

Google Goggles: using an Android phone, you take a picture of something and Google checks it against all of the pictures it can find and tries to identify what the picture is of (it's still a work in progress, but it easily identifies most landmarks).

Yes, but to end your life by inflicting horrible emotional scars (not to mention physical blood/brain splatters and building damage) on someone else is selfish. Hang yourself (and leave a note in the open so no one is surprised), gas yourself in your garage, do whatever you want as long as it doesn't impact other people.

Nope... pretty sure the story is made up and never happened. Aside from him not having enough food/drink to last him the 12 days it would take to build it, even if he had all the hand tools needed, he would not have an engine hoist or any way to lift the heavy parts required.

The Tesla argument continues; Oatmeal responds to Forbes. by freshasapoppyin geek

[–]barryicide 40 points41 points ago

No, a Forbes writer felt the need to respond because a bunch of idiots who saw the Oatmeal comic started saying "OMG Tesla is my hero and he's so amazing, I wish Edison got AIDS and died!". My facebook wall has been full of idiots trying to be cool by saying how great Tesla was and saying they want to get Tesla tattoos or saying that there's a conspiracy to keep his "free energy technology" secret.

They were both good for technology and deserve to be recognized.

It's like people who praise Steve Jobs, "OMG he's so amazing he did the iPod and iMac and his computers can't get viruses! He's so much better than Bill Gates, who I hope dies!" despite that fact that Ives designed every "i" device... and Jobs was a dick who cut all Apple charity donations while Gates has not just donated most of his fortune, but championed efforts to eliminate things like malaria and truly help the world.

Winchester 1866 (me) vs CZ 550 (bandit) by KidDeath10kin dayz

Winchester 1866 (me) vs CZ 550 (bandit) by KidDeath10kin dayz

[–]barryicide 0 points1 point ago

But a bandit with the CZ550 can hit you from several hundred meters away while hiding in a bush. A bandit with a Winchester needs to get much closer (and has less of a chance at a headshot).

There is no "better" in the comparison, only "different".

Do zombies stop chasing vehicles? by ataraxiaZEROin dayz

I ran up a lighthouse to coordinate with some survivors and a few minutes later I saw some movement on the horizon -- it was a hopper who had been following me 10 minutes ago. He followed me across a huge swath of the map and he was definitely farther than 200m.

I think they never stop chasing you... which is annoying, but it's Alpha, so hopefully they fix it.

I became a U.S. Citizen today and it feels like I arrived late in a party and there's no more cake and the music is dying and there's trash and some stray drunks around. Can reddit point out the things I should be grateful for and proud of that are special of America? by [deleted]in AskReddit

[–]barryicide 1 point2 points ago

A violent revolution is the last thing anyone wants... but if speaking out and voting don't work, what other options do citizens have against their government?

The "final solution" happened only 60 years ago. Did you know that one of the first things Hitler did was made it illegal for Jews to own weapons? Yeah - it's a lot easier to oppress, ghetto-ize, and finally kill off people when they are completely unarmed.

"Potentially-fighting the government" is not the reason most people in the U.S. own guns. We own them for target shooting, sport shooting, hunting, self-defense... and as a last measure against the government.

[–]barryicide 8 points9 points ago

No.

But considering "shit happens", it's a lot nicer knowing citizens can actually stand up to their government, instead of things like Syria (no, those countries' citizens do not "all own AK-47s" - they have much lower rates of gun ownership than the U.S.: http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/syria 3.9 guns per 100 people in Syria http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-states 88.8 guns per 100 people in U.S.).

Bandit Skins are out! Player skins will become loot. by VoxKoshkain dayz

[–]barryicide 6 points7 points ago

No chance for that now, because they will have a bullet between the eyes as soon as we see them.

And that's basically turning everyone into a bandit (instead of making bandits into survivors). It's a short-term tactic because in the long-term, more heads with more guns would've been able to kill more zombies and get more loot. If it was real-life, yes, there would be tension that someone might double cross you to take your stuff... but since it's a video game, X-percentage of people are just asshole who will kill you to "troll" you.

I hope they do something with the humanity system to keep the trolls in check, but I fear until then it's going to be all-out shoot-on-sight (as you have said).

Bandit Skins are out! Player skins will become loot. by VoxKoshkain dayz

[–]barryicide 0 points1 point ago

Killing a guy only takes away some of your humanity. I shot a guy in the back of the head (on accident! I was shooting at zombies that were shooting at him and he walked right in front of me). I went down in humanity, but was still positive and did not receive a bandit skin.

Bandit Skins are out! Player skins will become loot. by VoxKoshkain dayz

[–]barryicide 7 points8 points ago

And it shows that banditry is a stupid survival tactic because he could've asked for your pain pills (and if you didn't want to part with them for free, you could have traded for them).

As is, the game has no punishment for being an asshole bandit and killing all the newbs (I've spawned in and been shot at within 100 paces). In a real survival situation, more guns are better than one (and more packs to carry more loot), so people would band together.

I hope they do something good with the humanity system since they've taken the one thing that made being a bandit a bad thing.

Police Militarization in Ohio: Local Police Boost Arsenals With Surplus Military Gear --"This program allows us to purchase new M-16s out of the box at a minimal cost." by cottonball2in politics

[–]barryicide 2 points3 points ago

Giving local police military grade equipment is the same as having the military patrol our streets.

No, it is not. Are you 12 years old?

The 1033 program is a great program that helps older military equipment go to good use for police departments and it saves tax dollars.

I'm in the midwest; it's winter for a good portion of the year. During heavy snowfall, the police department frequently had a problem responding to calls because they only had rear-wheel drive Crown Victorias and Chargers. Rather than spend a huge chunk of tax payer money on a new 4WD truck, they were able to get a Humvee through the 1033 program and it was refitted for police duty for free through some local donations (a paint job, a light-bar install, and a few interior improvements). The Humvee is not crushing and killing innocent people, it's not ramming black drivers off the road, it's not perpetuating the drug war... it's pulled out of the garage when roads are bad so police can respond to calls.

Four Guardian Angels stabbed at Clark & Division stop on the Red Line. Think about that the next time you're criticizing a photographer for not breaking up a fight. by yooperannin chicago

[–]barryicide 6 points7 points ago

Not just that, but if you read the article, it wasn't the robber who stabbed the 4 men, but an assistant-to-the robber.

Two people splitting the profit on a phone (being a black market, they likely get a lot less than the street value) they got while readily stabbing several people.
