Aldi customer won't be charged in shooting - The Aldi customer who shot an armed robber in the store Monday won't face any criminal charges by FaramirofWIin wisconsin

[–]barryicide -2 points-1 points ago

I'm not complaining about downvotes - karma is made up and the points don't matter. I'm complaining because rather than respond to me with a relevant argument, he chose to just downvote me; that's not how we keep an intelligent conversation going.

Exactly. If someone really feels the need to rob... there are plenty of easy to rob neighborhoods with empty houses during the day and I'm sure you'd get more valuables from them than an Aldi cash register -- there are plenty of alternatives that don't require a robber to point a gun at a persons' head. If they point a gun at my head, I'm not going to second guess that "oh, he's just going to take what I have and leave peacefully".

The law states a "no weapons" sign must be clearly displayed. The sign at Aldi was not "clearly displayed" (I mean, obviously the robber with a shotgun didn't see it).

The robber made the situation dangerous when he started pointing a shotgun at people and threatening them. The trained CCWer saw an opportunity to diffuse the violent situation by removing the threat... and he did. There is simply no way to tell whether a violent robber with a shotgun is going to say "okay, thanks for the money, bye!" or start executing people. Robberies turn into executions all the time:

On a final note -- you downvoted me because you disagree with me; read reddiquette, you're only supposed to downvote someone when they are not contributing to the conversation.

[–]barryicide 5 points6 points ago

And what if the robber had entered the store and just decided to execute everyone which has happened many times in the past (lane bryant)?

If someone is pointing a gun at someone else threatening to kill them for a robbery, there is nothing wrong with someone trying to stop the robber - they are already breaking the law, what makes you think they will stop at murder?

Illinois Gunniters, any recommendations on a Gun Store? by markus5273in guns

[–]barryicide 0 points1 point ago

If you are north of Chicago:

Smoke N Gun in Waukegan, IL -- reasonable selection of firearms and a big selection of accessories. Prices are somewhat high, but you can try haggling. They have sales very seldomly, but I did manage to snag a Browning Hi-Power for a reasonable price.

The Outdoorsman in Winthrop Harbor, IL -- slightly smaller but more varied selection. They have a decent indoor range. The employees are nice and know me by name.

"Violence Policy Center"

Hit the brakes, the VPC is not some advocacy group just trying to reduce violence, they are strictly an anti-gun rights group masquerading as "think of the children, stop violence!":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_Policy_Center#Advocacy_concerns

Furthermore, Josh Sugarman is a fucking liar:

The state with the lowest gun death rates over all have far more comprehensive gun control laws

Complete bullshit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States_by_state

Sort by %Gun homicides and you'll see 3 of the top 5 are the most anti-gun states in the U.S. -- Illinois, Maryland, and California.

Compare the percentages to the Brady Campaign scorecard and you'll see a completely inverse relationship:

http://www.bradycampaign.org/stategunlaws/scorecard

Vermont has the lowest gun homicide rate, yet it is the most pro-gun state in the U.S. (you don't even need a permit to conceal or open carry).

EDIT: Whichever coward downvoted me -- read reddiquette; I'm contributing to the conversation, disagreeing with what I say does not mean you are supposed to downvote me. Reply to my comment with sources from "your side" of the argument and we can have a debate.

49 states have concealed carry laws permitting users to conceal carry (often with a permit, sometimes with a restricted permit, and occasionally "constitutional carry" meaning no permit is needed).

Unless you live in Illinois, it is highly likely women around you are carrying all the time... you just don't notice, because it's concealed.

EDIT: downvote me for clearing up a fact? Read the damn reddiquette.

If the snipers had this, it would've been a much easier shot (laser designation means the oscillation of the waves wouldn't matter).

Okay, well, do you believe in a traditional god (Yaweh, Allah, etc)? Because if so, they are veeeeeeeeery violent. Why can't your god have invented this technology (since god is people, as you say) to more efficiently kill the people god wants dead?

Gandhi (if you say you are like him, please spell his name correctly) supported the right to possess weapons -- here is a quote from his autobiography:

Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest.

Also, you did not answer my questions on what you would do in the real-life scenarios that have happened.

Okay, what are we supposed to do when Somali pirates take a boatload of people hostage and are threatening to kill them?

http://abcnews.go.com/International/story?id=7325633&page=1

What about when crazed terrorists decide to blow up a market or kill everyone in a school:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/01/20/48hours/main668127.shtml

Or when radicals decide to shoot up the olympics:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_massacre

I'm seriously asking, what would you have us do in those situations? This is the real world, there are bad people out there and sometimes you have to kill them before they kill a lot more innocents.

No miss just Aim high by cat_is_goodin gadgets

[–]barryicide 3 points4 points ago

As a pacifist, you should be happy for something like this because it will mean less innocent bystanders dying. Be a little bit of a realist and understand that sometimes we have to kill someone (because we live in the real world, not Candyland - as delicious as that would be) -- if we had a way to shoot one bullet and get the single hit needed to take a bad person down, isn't that better than having to fire hundreds of rounds, putting bystanders at risk?

Beretta v. Taurus by duho7761in guns

[–]barryicide 1 point2 points ago

The Beretta is far better in quality than the Taurus - that's not to say the Taurus is the worst gun in the world, but why compromise when they are such similar designs. If you were looking at a Taurus because of price, just get a nice used Beretta. I picked up one of these (for $375) and am extremely pleased with it. It's the G model so it has a thicker slide than the 92 FS and M9 (for higher pressure ammunition) and it has a decocker only, not the silly slide-mounted safety.

GPS would be worthless - you'd need to add a cellular radio so it could connect to the internet for map data (or embed maps on the device, but that creates a whole 'nother set of problems), the GPS receiver would suck down battery power (not a lot of space for big batteries in the nano), and it's too small of a device to be used well as a car GPS unit.

Is it possible to use my laptop as a second monitor? by Orelioin hardware

[–]barryicide 1 point2 points ago

Without a desire to disassemble the laptop, there is no way to do this with off-the-shelf laptops. As others have said, you can "bind" your laptop and desktop together so you can cross over between the desktops - that will let you move from gaming on the desktop to browsing web on the laptop... but it's a far cry from having two monitors hooked to the same system.
