Ray in the front: Aye, fight and you may die. Swim and you'll live -- at least a while. And dying in your sea beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!!!

Friend wants to borrow $7400 with 19% interest over 2 years. Thoughts? by Imnewtoallthisin personalfinance

[–]banchai 121 points122 points ago

My philosophy is to never loan money to friends or family. I give what I am comfortable losing. I would give him my friend $400 as a wedding gift and have him go elsewhere for the 7k. Also, I would not look to my friends as "investment" opportunities.

I have not lost any friends with this philosophy while I know many people whose close friendships were irreparably damaged over money loans.

Living frugally, but can I justify a splurge? by meyeayhin Frugal

I'd be more concern with getting mugged for your iPhone, especially if you are not paying keen attn to your surroundings. Keep phone in pocket and only one ear plug in you ear and carry pepper spray.

Also, I would advise against getting the protection plan. Get a sturdy case and even if your phone gets damaged, I find that the apple store geniuses will replace your phone for 199.00 in almost all cases if it's your first time.

My guess would be they don't buy on a large enough scale to get the bulk discounts that bigger companies can get, so it's just a way of spinning the price they pay and making themselves look better in the process.

Student Loan Debt: How should I attack it? by Bwtadpolein personalfinance

[–]banchai 0 points1 point ago

If possible, maybe you can ask your parents to pay off that Wells Fargo loan and then pay them back 1,000/mo for 13 months. It will save you around 800 in interest and your parents will earn 500 off their loan to you.

I would look into deferring or applying for forbearance on the Sallie Mae loan and consolidating the DoE loans to a lower rate. I think you can also get an add'l 0.25% off if you arrange automatic electronic payments. Read more about it here:

Giftcards are fucking stupid by [deleted]in self

[–]banchai 0 points1 point ago

Why not allow people to handle their money the way they want

Because it's not their money if they are receiving it as a gift.

Also, not all people would think like you do.

I know my brother is an outdoors guy; I also know he is frugal and does not spend money on himself. I get him Dick's/Sports Authority gift cards for his birthdays. I don't see him bitterly leaving his house to get something, but I do see him coming home after with a smile on his face and new toy/item to play with. If I were to gift straight cash, it could be misconstrued as thoughtless or demeaning by some. Giving my brother a gift card related to his interests shows some thought on my part.

If you are buying new, search for prices on Edmunds.com and Truecar.com to get a starting off point. Always try to shoot for 1,500 below** invoice** (not sticker/MSRP). Some dealers will say it can't be done, but it can. You'll also get better deals at the end of the month when dealerships are trying to meet incentives.

Paying off student loans, what to do? by mlee21in personalfinance

[–]banchai 2 points3 points ago

I would pay off the 3k loan just to get it off the books. You might get a nice psychological boost once that loan is wiped out and might give you extra motivation to start chipping at the bigger loan more aggressively.

Got my first real suit (that fits) had to wear in my brother's wedding today. Looking forward to wearing this around! by deuxfeuxin malefashionadvice

[–]banchai 8 points9 points ago

To be critical: Tie too wide; should match lapel width, shoulder pad boner, and top half of suit looks small in proportion to bottom half. Also dress shirt sleeve is a bit too long.

With that said, you probably still look better than 90% of the suit wearing attendees at your brother's wedding.
