Anyone ever gone on a solo trip? by Wastingtimeawayin snowboarding

I need to be out there in my own thoughts and figure out some of the shit in my life.

If that's the case, the App trail is the way to go. Nothing like a hike in the woods to clear the mind up to makes some decisions.

Snowboarding armor? by olfanin snowboarding

Sounds like you'll need a spine protector at least. You'll probably reflexively try to avoid falling on your spine when you fall. This is going to open up other areas to a potentially harder impact and injury. You do not want the other area to be the spine. Same reason I'd also invest in a helmet if you don't already have one. It be an absolute shame to try to avoid injuring your shoulder and instead cracking your head open in the process.

Along with whatever armor you decide to get, I'd highly suggest a quality shoulder brace. Talk to my doctor/physio about what specific brace is right for your specific injury (ie don't just buy any old brace). You have to get a brace that is going to stabilize the area of injury. You are going to fall on your shoulder eventually, and the injured area needs to be protected, as it is much weaker than everything else around it (even if it feels fine).

In fact, I'd get the shoulder brace before I got anything else, as 1) I think it's more important and 2) you'll need whatever other armor you buy to fit over the brace. I really wouldn't skimp on the should brace. Think of it as an insurance policy. Worth every dollar in my experience.

This comes from a guy with a loooong history of injuries. jmo though.

I go damn near exclusively on solo missions all over the northeast. I prefer midweek trips, and no one I know goes during that time.

The question you gotta ask yourself is do you want to hike, and then snowboard later? Or do you want to snowboard now? What's your priority.

Anyone use a back protector for snowboarding? by alphaeighteenin snowboarding

Truth. For some of us older guys, paying the premium for that insurance is more than worth it. The downside risk is too much. My bones aren't what they used to be in my early 20s, and I need to keep my income/job. Plus, the protection keeps you on the slopes and not laid up on the couch. Another win.

joejance has some good recos. I too am old and can't afford to break anything. I personally wear the following, and love both:

SKeletools padded shorts: You can take out, adjust, cut whatever pads you want. I leave the hip and tail bone in and take out all the rest (leg/front etc).

Flexmeter Wristguards: Best wrist designed guards on the market (for a number of reasons which I'm too lazy to spell out). Difficult for some people to fit in gloves. They make a full glove model too.

Tuning question - file damaging my base? by DVNOin snowboarding

Common sense tells me it's not normal. What happens if you keep doing it? You will eventually have a nice little groove on your edges there. We can both agree this is not a good thing.

Either change angles, find a vid with a tutorial, or call up the company and ask how to use it properly without scraping your base.

Without going too much into it, this isn't a right/left, yes/no question.

You use both feet depending on where you are in the turn and what you are doing. Very generally, you want more weight on your front foot and lead with this foot. I'm guessing you lean too far back. Probably have a bit of windshield wiper motion going on.

There's tons of free video tutorials that can break it down for you. Try these:

Snow Professor - links on the right

Trusnow with Doug - playlists on the right

Snow Wolf has a bunch, but you have to sift through his other vids.

Product comparison between '11 and '12 gear, what improvements are there? by letsgetsillyin snowboarding

I second david_z on the boots (and any other non board gear too, frankly). Some people have wads of cash to blow on gear. For those who don't, last years stuff is every bit as good the vast majority of the time.

Especially when you consider your wife is intermediate. She's not going to notice any real difference.

Note: I've got no opinion on this board, as I know nothing about it.

Trying out the crazy "No Shampoo" thing. Wish me some greasy luck. by rubein Health

No problem. Perhaps trying to sleep without a tshirt would help. Your back generates a fair amount of heat/sweat/oil. It might makes sense to let your back 'breathe'.

I know these sound like 'nothing' tips, but if one of them does work after period of time, then...how good is that?

Honestly man, I use almost no shampoo. I use some really mild (all natural) stuff once every month or two. It's less maintenance, and your hair does become less naturally greasy. I still scrub my scalp and hair out with my fingers in the shower, but that's it.

For facial acne, one thing to do is change your pillow case every night. Basically, you buy 7 of them, use one each night, and wash them all with a mild detergent (no additives) at the end of the week. Buy 14 if you are really lazy. I've heard some people like to put hand towels over their pillow case and simply replace with a fresh one every night.

Now, I realize cystic acne is particularly troublesome and has several causes, but this is an easy thing to try and may help. If you are having acne on the back issues, changing your full sheets every day could help, but it would be a lot more effort.

Something to think about.
