Fair play, it's naughty, but if you're going to get done for speeding you might as well get your money's worth.

In the UK that'd land you in prison. :-(

Car Shopping: How to watch out for rolled odometers? by Discriminatein Cartalk

[–]baldchap 1 point2 points ago

Service history, safety inspections, tyre receipts, the list of supporting documentation should be overwhelming and show a steady mileage increase over the years.

Cars are tactile things - are the seats knackered, is the gearstick worn, is the steering wheel shiny and smooth?

Financially, clocking a car needs to be big numbers to be worth the risk - it should be pretty obvious.

Thinking about buying a 1981 VW diesel wagon for a daily driver. It has 130k miles and no rust. Am I an idiot? by HRPufnstufin Autos

But a TDi if you want a TDi. People who 'just' add a turbo because 'it's not difficult' end up with broken cars. you need to alter timing to take advantage of it, chich mean different cam profiles and valve openings just for a start. Then there's the increased internal stresses - do you honestly think VW would go to the cost of making internals to tolerate the stresses of a turbo (for example forged con rods & pistons) then not add a turbo? Trust me, there's different internals between 1.9TDi lumps in different states of tune, let alone SDi and TDi lumps.

Rather than go to the effort and cost of an engine swap or serious alteration, buy the vehicle you need to begin with - I assure you it will be easier, cheaper and more reliable.

Edit: Good link that covers absolute basics.

Car Modification for Beginners (Tips?) by omniphagein Cartalk

[–]baldchap 2 points3 points ago

If you're serious about modifying cars for performance then always start with the best performing model to begin with.

The best mod you'll ever make is advanced track and road tuition - it's transferrable to every car you'll ever drive and will do more for your average speed than any mechanical modifications - it might save your life too...

Why don't we seem to be 'progressing' in the 250 world? by dcruzerin motorcycles

[–]baldchap 2 points3 points ago

Racing is the big driver of technology. That's why the 400 supersports died out - Japan changed their racing classifications. Japan don't race 250s particularly, hence the reason they've never come on particularly.

Cost is the other factor - who's going to pay for massive development or racing bling on a 'starter bike' that sees limited sales worldwide?

The rest of the world typically use 125s (eg most of Asia) or bigger bikes. 250s don't really sell in Europe or Asia. So why would the manufacturers waste money developing the 250s when they sell relatively few to begin with, and when most 250 riders aren't experienced enough to know the difference anyway?

Crosspost from r/miata that crossed back. What about these miata-ish cars? by racemic_mixturein Cartalk

[–]baldchap 2 points3 points ago

The S2000 is the better track car without a doubt, but slightly harder work lower down (eg around town) due to the VTEC power delivery. The MX-5 has an engine that's fitted to bigger 'normal' cars, so it's pretty torquey and will happily pull 1500rpm round town. You need to be in the right gear more in the S2000, but when you are it's far quicker and ultimately more rewarding. There's slightly less chassis feedback and as a result of that and the increased pace, they're easier to crash - certainly not one for an amateur.

Costs are higher, but allegedly so is reliability.

Think of the S2000 as a more hardcore Miata and you're somewhere close. A better drivers car for sure, but you pay for the priviledge in cost and usability.
