TROPHY CASE

Researchers have identified what they say are the oldest-known musical instruments in the world, flutes carbon-dated between 42,000 and 43,000 years old. by nomdewebin science

[–]baddox 1 point2 points ago

If it was used for communication, why would it not qualify as music? A drummer keeping time for marching soldiers, for example, should qualify as music even though it serves a more practical purpose.

The full time SC2 players should be the best SC2 players. I do not care where they're from as long as they make it to events and play good games.

How much does it cost to employ a cop for an hour (including salary, benefits, car maintenance, etc.)? It seems unlikely for a cop to be able to generate enough revenue to pay for him- or herself, unless they get the occasional big payoff from confiscated drug money or something.

They renamed Asha to avoid confusion with Osha. The Qarth plot line is definitely developing different, but it should be pretty easy to get them back to the end result from the books.

I watch the highest quality they offer, and it's really bad. It's noticeably worse than a 480p stream on TwitchTV.

I think it is horrible. It's worse than the average 480p stream you would see on TwitchTV.

The VOD quality is horrible. It might be better than the live stream, but it's still by far the worst video quality of any Starcraft event I know of.

I got the point, I was just confused about what this image actually was. Perhaps you could clarify it by separating the two rows a bit, citing a source for the first row, and captioning the second row with something like "my retort."

What Terran army is cost efficient against a triple AOE Protoss army? Sure, you can harass all you want, but if they get the triple AOE army, is your best bet just waiting for a big mistake or trying to base race? Actually, forget all of that, what maxed Terran army can even beat a triple AOE Protoss army, disregarding cost efficiency?

Capitalism. by otonzerin Anarcho_Capitalism

SpaceX won a contract from NASA to resupply the ISS. The United States allowed private corporations to compete for the chance to receive funding which was coerced from US citizens. So, not exactly capitalism, but I suppose it's a start.

Chicago cop thinks of himself as an anarchist by [deleted]in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]baddox 2 points3 points ago

How so? According to your definition, anyone who knowingly benefits from government services would also be violating their anarchist philosophy. That would include anyone employed in any industry regulated by the government. Also, anyone who votes.

How could anyone believe they're practicing it? Last time I checked, there aren't many voluntary societies to move to.

Well, all the changes they've made are much less significant than avoiding the RW altogether (hopefully you know what that stands for; I want to keep it somewhat vague unless a non-reader stumbles onto this). Without the RW, they would either have to find another way to accomplish the same thing, or change a lot of big plot points going forward.

Debate an Anarcho-communist: The Truth about the Non-aggression Principle and Capitalism by Evolutionfirein Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]baddox 0 points1 point ago

Committing violence to defend one's property ...

But, it's only "your property" if you subscribe to a view of property rights that allows ownership of land. If, on the other hand, you're a social libertarian who believes all land belongs to everyone (or, equivalently, to nobody), then to you there's not such thing as "defending one's property" when it comes to land.

The way I always present the disagreement it is as follows: Propertarian libertarians (e.g. anarcho-capitalists) believe that tearing down someone's fence is an act of aggression, while antipropertarian libertarians (e.g. libertarian socialists) believe that putting up a fence is an act of aggression.

[–]baddox 1 point2 points ago

Furthermore, property as a right, as an extension of body is not an honest discussion,

You shouldn't have the "furthermore" there, because the only real difference in opinion here is that of property rights. It's the central difference between anarchists on the right and left, and it seems to me to be a difference in axioms.

The only real debate between right and left anarchists is over which axiom of property rights they subscribe to. The only convincing arguments I've heard for either view are consequentialist and therefore probably mostly speculative.

That sounds right, but I think the alignments of the Westerlings was an extremely minor thing compared to the fact that Robb broke his marriage pact. Even if Robb had married a girl from one of the Freys' allies, Walder would have been pissed.

Democracy by rob777in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]baddox 2 points3 points ago

Wouldn't a completely planned economy (something 1984-ish, where everyone just works at their assigned job and is issued all of their essential resources) be a better antithesis of a free market? A democracy can have a partially free market that allows for some individual economic choices, so I don't see how it's the antithesis of a free market economy.

Tips for debating with anarchists and statists in general by throwaway-oin Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]baddox 0 points1 point ago

The problem with your tip is that words like "coercion," "aggression," "liberty," "property," etc. are in fact extremely difficult to define in a consistent and satisfying fashion, and people don't agree on the definitions. It's intellectually lazy or dishonest to replace "coercion" with "assaulting or robbing," because there are many other actions which some people would consider "coercion" while others don't. For example, a statist who buys into the social contract might not consider taxation in a democracy coercion, so replacing "coercion" with "assault" would completely change the meaning.

Not really. To avoid spoilers, I'll say that anyone who would be upset about Robb marrying Jeyne would be just as upset about Robb marrying some other chick from the East. Unless I'm forgetting something from the books, there wasn't much else that Jeyne herself did for the plot.
