Bieber seems to be the girl in the relationship. by Shanilla8in funny

[–]atlas44 0 points1 point ago

I don't expect anything from it. I'm just against the corporate machine churning out "popular music" and people still buying it. I don't have anything against him personally, but he is a big part of this trend that I loathe. It's not about music, it's simply about the money. He's a kid that sings. They selected him and made him famous. When he no longer generates a profit, they will drop him and he will fade into obscurity. Maybe not. I don't know. But right now, that's how it seems to me.

Youtubers, the Pinnacle of Modern Intelligence. by cocoalemurin funny

Yeah, I agree that they're over-rated. I think they just gathered a following of a million 14 year olds really quickly, so they have to cater to their viewers. They're just trying to make money now. I'm not arguing that they're great. Just that they're pretty funny sometimes...or used to be. Whatevz. I guess they kinda suck.

Why so? They're funny guys. Their old podcasts (before they were really popular) are pretty good. Their youtube stuff is tailored to all the younger people that watch them, I think. But they can still be clever at times.

He's the face chosen by some huge corporate record label. He sings well...maybe. More than likely, every sound that kid has ever recorded has been processed and altered through a number of computer programs. And he definitely doesn't write the songs or make any of the actual music that he "sings" over. It's the same with almost every "artist" played on the radio. I have no respect for any of it because it's entirely artificial. There's no heart or soul or any of the things that make music an art. It's just a carefully crafted product that's marketed like any other.

How do you define unnatural? Because it seems that you're using it in a negative way. Driving in cars and talking through copper wires (like using a computer or telephone) is "unnatural". That doesn't mean it is necessarily bad. It's more practical and efficient, and it is of course easier. Hunting wild animals is an all day affair. If we still had to hunt for our food all the time, we would never have developed so much. I think it's silly to put blame on the practice of farming. The blame is owed towards the corporations that create an environment where people are only able to care about money. These farm workers are the modern hunters. They have to spend their whole day doing something rather stupid, just so they can get the resources they need to survive.

We are animals. How do people forget that?

You're probably correct. I think a lot of people are looking at this issue objectively, and in this particular case it's important to look at it subjectively. As in, from the perspective of the workers. What would you, or any other sensible person do in that situation?

They probably have minimal training and they are likely not paid enough to care. And it's highly unlikely that the people who take a job at an animal processing-plant have animal-rights in mind to begin with. Their job is simply to get the animals from one place to another. Animals don't always cooperate, especially when they are afraid. They can't just nicely ask the animal to move, or wait around for the animal to do what they want. That's exactly the opposite of their job. If they don't move the animals, then they aren't doing their job and would probably lose it. That probably makes them afraid. Fear turns in to anger, which can become hatred and cruelty.

I'm not trying to say that they are doing the right thing, or to justify animal cruelty. I'm just saying that we need to consider every perspective, and take into account that the conditions of their work-environment have an important role in influencing their behavior.

I don't know about mental illness. However, these people probably aren't paid enough to care. And, I would imagine that the people who take a job at an animal processing plant probably don't care at all about animals.

Why do/did you smoke? by rhythm_rhythmin stopsmoking

[–]atlas44 2 points3 points ago

For the past six or so years, every peak and valley of a moment was crystallized in memory with a cigarette. Although, there was a lot of smoking in the moments between. I read "The Fountainhead" when I was fairly young, and there's a short part about a cigarette that really struck a cord with me.

“I like to think of fire held in a man's hand. Fire, a dangerous force, tamed at his fingertips. I often wonder about the hours when a man sits alone, watching the smoke of a cigarette, thinking. I wonder what great things have come from such hours. When a man thinks, there is a spot of fire alive in his mind--and it is proper that he should have the burning point of a cigarette as his one expression.”

It seemed so poetic to knowingly play with death. I convinced myself that going out for a cigarette was this significant event, and I really felt like I was able to pause life and examine it in the moment. Eventually the time between these moments compressed until they were nothing but my reaction to the slightest boredom. I had a lot of trouble dealing with the association I had made between fond memories and smoke.

UNT to be smoke-free campus starting Jan. 2013 by JaneReneein unt

[–]atlas44 1 point2 points ago

People are exposed to and willingly expose themselves to toxins and carcinogens constantly. Depending on geographical location, your local atmosphere is saturated with a fairly consistent amount of pollution. Realistically speaking, momentary exposure to second-hand smoke in an open-air environment is not significantly more harmful, short-term or long-term, than exposure to the everyday atmosphere.

So, if the purpose of this ban is to make people healthier, then it has already failed. If the purpose is to eliminate smoking because it is smelly and gross and personally unwanted, well that's a more realistic reason. And it seems that this is the real reason that the majority of people support the ban. Not because it's significantly detrimental to their health, but because they don't like being around it, which makes it an issue of rights.

UNT to be smoke-free campus starting Jan. 2013 by JaneReneein unt

[–]atlas44 2 points3 points ago

Yes, it is. Smoking is harmful, and no one should be forced to expose themselves to smoke. But people should also have the right to do as they please, as long as it doesn't affect others. It would be like a ban on soda or coffee on campus. Sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, caffeine, and even carbonation are somewhat harmful. And if a ban was proposed, there would be an uproar against it. Not because those drinks are healthy, but because people want them and believe they have the right to do what they want with their body (despite it being unhealthy).

Pirates were romanticized in early films (and still are to this day). They were either the antagonizing rapscallion villains of the plot, or the exciting adventurous explorer good-guys. For the first type, the spectrum of their bad-behavior was fairly mild (they kidnapped damsels and stole things), but they generally had a code of honor (which culminated in some stupid sword fight between the two main characters). On the other end of the spectrum, they were rambunctious, fun, and generally likable. The fact that they existed during and harassed the british empire made them even more appealing to the American public. This eventually culminated into our modern idea of pirates as being compelling bad-asses who are just looking for a good time, like in all those damn disney movies.

Unless there is a dramatic shift in societies values (primarily regarding an acceptance of the reasons and methods these groups use), I highly doubt we will ever see them portrayed in such a positive light. For the same reasons that we still don't have movies that fill us with compassion for nazis. /rant
