Rewatching Boy Meets World years later and I finally get this joke. by MalaTaein funny

[–]aterlumen 0 points1 point ago

The scale is arbitrary anyways. They throw a ton of information on the AP tests to get a good score distribution, then the scores are assigned based on that distribution. Getting a 5 on the AP test just means you're in the top 20% of students who took the test.

Yep, ask when the last time the gun was calibrated, it may have been a couple of years.

Wow. I think the best way of dealing with that situation is to say "Yep, I'll go get them right away." Leave the room, put on a fake mustache, and come back.

that doesn't sound very pleasant. When I got mine out there was lots of slicing gums and breaking up the teeth to get them out, I'm really glad I wasn't awake for it.

Any trumpet players here that don't like marching band and drum corp? by AperionProjectin trumpet

[–]aterlumen 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. 3rd trumpets need to be practically on fire to get good balance in a corps setting. I'm on third this year and I'm expecting to lose a lot of range over the summer because I will never be playing above the staff. Use it or lose it. The way it works at my corps is they have the thirds play as loud as they physically can without completely sacrificing tone quality and then build the balance off of that.

I know a girl who's doing that that's pretty good. It's free there, they just need to get a certain number of people to pass I think.

Any tips for playing Bugler's Holiday or Trumpeter's Lullaby? by amyjw123in trumpet

[–]aterlumen 0 points1 point ago

I'll be the third to say: Practice your double tonguing. With a metronome, and record yourself if your instructor isn't be there. Speed doesn't matter much, the goals are consistent rhythm and having the same sound with the front and back of tongue articulations. Bugler's Holiday is fun to play really fast, but that's not what will score you points at contest. Focus on the technique, speed will come naturally the more you practice.

You have to keep in mind that the marching band is the public face of most band programs, it's a PR machine. In high school the only exposure your band will get to the community at large is on the football field. If people like you there, then there's a lot higher chance of them coming to the sit down concerts and supporting the program as a whole. The rest of your ensembles could be Julliard quality, but without a marching band a large part of the community will never see it. You don't have to like it, but it is an important piece of the puzzle.

Kids can sometimes barely play their instrument, sticking them on a field and haveing them march around makes everything so much worse, ug.

Sounds like you had a bad experience in high school, similar to mine. My senior year I got to accept every single last place trophy we got. That still burns.

Competitive marching band/corp is like for musicians who want to do some kind of jock thing,

Could you expand on that? There's no law that says that musicianship has to be completely separate from athleticism.

That would be nice. There's an entire floor of them in the music building and they're always packed. The only time I was able to use one was the day I auditioned for entrance, and they didn't even take any minors that round.

Any sysadmins for Universities here? or Academic sector? by g-mein sysadmin

[–]aterlumen 1 point2 points ago

Another state university here, politics are a problem. They follow a pretty strict ITIL structure for stuff like approving new products. Our old homemade timecard system for the helpdesk staff went belly up and they've been in the investigating options phase for over a year now. Lots of bureaucracy to wade through for some stuff.

We touched on message passing towards the end, but it still seemed pretty awkward. The professor spent most of the time having us do a pseudo-database project that was pretty useless.

You can do passive data collection on stuff like ethernet with a physical device. Not sure if there'd be any way to do it via software. I'd guess not at their level.

Ah, forgot it was DrRacket that we used. We were programming in R5RS, so we didn't get any of the fun stuff (OOP, what's that?).

University of Minnesota. Even music minors can't use practice rooms from about 10-3 because there's so much demand.

Yep. The only ones I got were TI-83 and Racket. Which also made me realize that I may be misusing terminology. I thought the first is called TI-Basic, and Racket is just an IDE, you can use a few variants of scheme in it.

It helps that when I started I already had a pretty low body fat percentage, so I can see pretty much all of the muscle growth.

Yep

There is also acknowledgment that the Great Depression, the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935, labor unrest, market forces, rapidly increasing traffic congestion, taxation policies that favored private vehicle ownership, urban sprawl, and general enthusiasm for the automobile played a role.
