Maybe accepting a teaching job in Turkey...any tips/info? by berserkergaangin Turkey

[–]asimbey 8 points9 points ago

Whether or not you accept it depends greatly on your goals I think. Malatya is beautiful, green, famous for apricots, but it's relatively small. I think that if your top goals are learning Turkish, connecting with people, roughing it a little, getting out of the big city and having a relatively quiet lifestyle then it could be a good idea to give it a shot. But if you're young and active, not sure about Turkish language, like to go out at night, used to a big city, or easily distressed by boredom, culture shock or isolation, then I might say wait and see if you can find something in Istanbul instead. I traveled there and I liked it, but I'd recommend you also travel there and see if you like it before you commit.

Possible exception: Firefly. Then again, Firefly was always exceptional.

True. I guess what I meant was, we're not gonna judge you based on our atheism or because we're told to judge you. We don't have a book which we use to justify our judgement of women, homosexuals or non-atheists. A judgmental atheist is a judgmental person who is an atheist. Read the comic again; I don't say that religious people are judgmental. All the ones I know are not. But a lot of the ones I know worry that all or most atheists are bound to judge them negatively from the get go. I disagree with that notion and decided to put my sentiments into a fun comic.

I'm not attempting to speak for every atheist (and particularly not random people on the internet), just the ones I know. Everybody is judgmental to a degree. Even in my comic, I imply that Christians and religious people are not free-thinking. I admit that is unfair, but the comic is meant to be read in a lighthearted manner. Don't sue me if an atheist is an ass to you; I was just trying to send a positive message, a word from the rest of us.

If you're speaking harshly of my comic, I kindly inform you that I was going for irony. I don't actually believe we should behave in a manner conducive to the Dark Side of The Force :) Also, I was not referring specifically to anonymous self-proclaimed atheists on the internet as being generally tolerant and reasonable. I was speaking to my experience in the outside world with atheists. I think if you get out of your house and meet some atheists in person you might be surprised to find that they are often poorly represented in forums and comments online.

I'm sick of trying to convert Christians by being reasonable. The other day I just said f*ck it, I'm going with Vader :)

It's not unfair for your assessment of this subreddit to be so greatly affected by the content of such posts, but I would encourage you to view it not as everyone getting together to shit on another group, but rather to deal with discouraging or hurtful experiences in a humorous and anonymous way. mrmumkey's and evilkorova's posts above speak to this point eloquently and accurately.

Perhaps you can make some posts that are more like what you'd like to see and others like you will get a small sense of relief when they see them :)

I agree with your attitude and the post to which you linked. I think this is a place where we shouldn't be afraid to vent a little, but it's true that there are a few jerks in every group. I think the best way to combat it is to live by our best example.

I lived abroad for a couple years in a country where many of the people do not hold a positive view of Americans. I thought about telling people that I was Canadian, but to have to lie about oneself is disheartening and sick. Anyway, a lot of people I met told me that they were pleasantly surprised at how much interest I took in them, their language and culture and that I did not seem like what they imagined an American to be. The truth is that a few people can do widespread damage to a reputation, but just one person can flip that completely in another's mind.

You make a good point. I think both sides mistakenly attribute the undesirable characteristics of the extremists from the other side to all the people of that group. I made this comic to play on the sentiment that I held when I was an evangelical Christian that atheists were akin to the Dark Side; they were evil, irrational, unkind and dangerous to talk to. I learned later that atheists (who tend to be skeptical by nature) are less likely to follow a highly irrational path without questioning it than an indoctrinated religious person.

While many atheists harbor deep resentment for religion for how it negatively impacts their or a loved one's life (or entire societies), any viciousness of theirs isn't supported by their atheism or because of their atheism. Though I'm sure a few exist somewhere, I've never met or even heard of anyone who used atheism to justify a bad attitude (i.e. 'well there is no god, so we can be terrible and there are no consequences').

In the same way that hateful Christians get on your nerves for damaging the image, I strongly believe that the handful of bored and likely socially inept atheist jerks on the internet and in some of the bars are a very poor representation of the atheist community. True, a lot of people (myself included) will occasionally post something on this subreddit that is hostile toward extremist religious people. Speaking for myself, it's a kind of therapy for me, a chance to have a laugh about a darker time of my life. However, you will not find a hostile comment from me here or in person. Sorry this was long. Anyway, I sincerely hope that you meet more atheists like the ones I've met. I think you will :)
