Do people here support Scottish independence? by salakastoin europe

[–]arte_misia 1 point2 points ago

If they ask for my support, they'll have it.

If they do vote for independance they might ask for some sort of an alliance with the Nordics (esp. Norway and Iceland), and probably form a "special relationship" in regards to things like fishing rights.

In the unlikely event that Iceland ever wins Norway's NRK will host it.
Iceland would get the glory but Norway the pain :)

Sweden and Italy.

They must have Europe's top wind machine operator at hand in Baku, letting the EBU have their money's worth.
Unless Loreens gets blown off stage and into the Caspian See, she'll end up one of the top three.

I think it's save to bet on us all falling in line come voting time.

My bet is that Iceland will give Sweden 10 or 12 points.
Euphoria (the Swedish entry) is already popular here.

I liked Finland's entry, too. It's a manifestation similar background of the Nordics and thus similar musical taste.
BUT when it comes to the Eastern-Block's clique-forming in voting, well, those thoughts are best put in PMs

This should not be taken too seriously.
No one can actually like this type of music, it's a genre all of its own.

I like the voting part best. And the betting. I have already lost one bet.
I maintained that in these times of trouble one could always count on at least one certainty; in Eurovision the Greeks will wear white and take their tops off at the end. Well, they didn’t.
Surely the end is near

Monsanto maize banned in France. by CrazyDrummerin worldnews

[–]arte_misia 1 point2 points ago

Paris renewed its ban on growing genetically modified maize, on 16 March 2012,
claiming the move was justified by the results of a study on the safety of GM maize Bt11,
published by the EU’s Food Safety Authority (EFSA), in December 2011.

The findings show that cultivation of this maize poses “significant risks for the environment” – including possible negative impacts on sensitive insect populations.

we have no problem with it

Some do have a problem with it, Americans less than Europeans.

"In the US, by 2009/10, 93% of the planted area of soybeans, 93% of cotton, 86% of corn and 95% of the sugar beet were genetically modified varieties .. The Grocery Manufacturers of America estimated in 2003 that 70-75% of all processed foods in the U.S. contained a GM ingredient".

Thankfully, we have regulations in Europe that recognize the consumers' right to information on traceability and labeling as a tool for making an informed choice on what we consume.

The assets in the UK were sold, and are still being sold, to repay its debt.

This bank was located in the UK and the Netherlands, not Iceland.

Actually, the Icelandic state wanted to repay right away but the voters did not.
They felt no obligation to pay the debt of a private bank.

I'm not sure what you mean by "them". Landsbanki was a private bank and, as far as I know,
none of this money ever came to Iceland. I'm not going to make any excused for them, or any other bankers.

I'm not sure how much Landsbanki has repaid, but information should be fairly easily available through your local council.

In Feb 2012 local councils in the UK received first £100 million.
For example:

Wyre Forest District Council, got over £930,000 in Feb 2012.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council £1.5m in Feb 2012
Havering Council £1.5million

Ikea's French managers sacked over allegations that they used illegal police files to spy on staff and customers by krattrin europe

[–]arte_misia 2 points3 points ago

The reporter forgot to ask the "why"? question.
Why did Ikea, France feel they needed to spy on staff and customers?

And the "how"? wasn't really addressed either.

allegations that Ikea paid for illegal access to secret police files

Why does the French police keep secret files on people? Who are these people? Have they been informed of the file on them?

This piece leaves me with more questions than it answered.

Oh, and the most important question, illegal police files, illegal as in 'illegal for other than the police' or did the police make them illegally?
Isn't that really the story here, the French police keeping illegal secret files on people.
