Real basic C# question on variables in methods by msmouse05in learnprogramming

[–]adolfojp 0 points1 point ago

You've decided to learn how to swim by jumping into the deep end of the pool. Congratulations, you didn't drown. However, I will advice you to take some swimming lessons. If you keep flailing your arms around aimlessly you will continue to swallow water.

Here are your lessons in the form of a free C# book: http://www.robmiles.com/c-yellow-book/. It is more than adequate. Download the latest version. Variable scope is in page 58 and the static keyword is in page 94. And there is no public vs. static. Have fun in the water!

Visual Studio 11 Express (Free) Editions will only target Metro Apps by wordsmithiein programming

VS Express isn't meant for professional developers

VSE isn't meant for professional developers. But that's not the problem. The problem is that the new version of VSE might not even be suitable for those who are not professional developers.

There is a very large gap that exists between the beginners who don't know what a variable is and the professionals who make a living with their tools. In this gap live the students, the hobby developers, and the casual programmers. And the old VSE tools filled this gap very nicely. VSE 2010 ran on XP, Vista, and 7. It allowed you to create WinForms, WPF, Console, and Library projects. And you could even use it with XNA to learn how to write games. In contrast, the new VSE only runs on Windows 8. It only works for creating Metro apps. And there is no mention of XNA. Those who can't upgrade their operating systems will have to look elsewhere. Those who want to learn how to create regular desktop apps will have to look elsewhere. Those who want to learn how to write games will have to look elsewhere. And even those who want to learn how to write console "Hello World" apps will be SOL. The new VSE alienates many non professionals, and even worse, it doesn't give them many of the tools that they require to grow. In its efforts to recruit developers to fill the Windows 8 app store Microsoft might just have convinced many of them to use development technologies that don't require Metro, Visual Studio, or even the Windows ecosystem at all.

ASP.NET MVC isn't meant for hobbyists

I believe that you're either overestimating the complexity of ASP.NET MVC or underestimating the capabilities of hobbyists. It is pretty normal to see 15 year olds fiddling with full stack frameworks like ASP.NET MVC and Rails these days. And you can get cheap hosting for about 10 bucks a month so it is pretty accessible for most people.

Visual Studio 11 Express (Free) Editions will only target Metro Apps by wordsmithiein programming

[–]adolfojp 17 points18 points ago

It also sucks for ASP.NET MVC developers.

If your MVC app grows you're going to want to refactor some of your code into libraries. You can no longer use the express editions of Visual Studio to create standalone libraries.

Many ASP.NET MVC developers use third party open source libraries and tools. A lot of the developers who create these libraries and tools use the express editions of Visual Studio. They are no longer welcome to work on the platform and this makes the entire ecosystem poorer.

This won't push newcomers to Windows 8. This will push newcomers away from Visual Studio.

It's most likely WPF. It's not exactly a new look. The Zune desktop software uses the same style of GUI.

Pretty close, Puerto Rico. The cable provider is One Link. Here are some Yelp reviews.

The cable service insists on selling ad space during the actual shows (regardless of the fact that it might be a major network from the states) so, not only are they not satisfied with replacing American ads with local ones, they'll actually stick an ad during the freakin' show!!!

I don't use their services, but the ones that I use are only marginally better.

It's even worse where I live. They actually have popup ads on TV. And every once in a while they will shrink the size of your program to display and animated sidebar. And worst of all they will replace some commercials with local ones, but they don't always sync up with the TV show, so they make you miss parts of it. They only do this for high profile TV shows, but the experience gets so degraded that I just refuse to watch them on Cable.

Movies everyone hates but you seem to like. by Death_prooferin movies

[–]adolfojp 4 points5 points ago

For me it was Kung Pow! Enter the Fist.

People say that you shouldn't go full retard. Kung Pow went full retard and beyond. For some people Kung Pow was a good 5 minute joke that was made into a terrible motion picture. For me the dedication to the joke was a test of conviction. I laughed at the movie, I laughed at the memories of the bad movies that it lampooned, and then I laughed at myself for laughing at the movie. (But the part with the cow, that I just hated.)

T3 was a decent action movie. It wasn't memorable but it wasn't terrible either. And it got a 71% score on RT which is pretty good for an action movie.

But the fans of the series didn't like it for three reasons. The first reason is that it wasn't as good as T2, but this was to be expected because T2 was one of the greatest action movies ever made. James Cameron left some really big shoes to fill and the inevitable result was disappointment. The second reason is that it deviated from the things that fans loved about the second movie. Sarah Connor wasn't in the movie at all because Linda Hamilton didn't want to participate in it. Edward Furlong was replaced by Nick Stahl because Edward was suffering from drug problems. Skynet wasn't defeated at the end so many fans thought that this neglected the heroics and sacrifice of the second movie. And the list goes on. For this reason you can think of T3 as the Prisoner of Azkaban. It was better as a movie than as part of a franchise and that's why the critics liked it better than the fans did. The third reason is that many fans thought that the saga was complete and that T3 was just an attempt to make easy money. The fact that Arnold was too old to be believable in the role cemented this belief.

T4, however, was just awful and a waste of Christian Bale. And when people like to argue about its good qualities I just ask them about the second Transformers movie. If they say that they liked it then I just walk away from the discussion.

sparred for the first time today (krav maga). went well. could use some advice. any good sources for learning about sparring? by Penguinlordofdoomin martialarts

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts_weight_classes#Unified_Rules_of_Mixed_Martial_Arts

Im MMA your height puts you in the middleweight to light heavyweight category but your current weight puts you in the welterweight category. If you were to fight at a professional level you could bulk it up to 185 easily.

However, not all bodies are created the same and you're not going to spend 8 hours a day and 6 days a week at a gym drinking protein shakes, so don't stress about unrealistic goals. But assuming that you've got no body fat (because you're a skinny guy and I envy you) if you were to gain 10 pounds of muscle you would probably look like Carlos Condit. He is a relatively skinny guy but I wouldn't like to get in a fight with him.

Help with starting a database. URGENT by androiDocin learnprogramming

[–]adolfojp 6 points7 points ago

Later this afternoon? You fucked up royally. You can either lie through your teeth dropping keywords like skrillex drops the bass and quite possibly get caught in the lie or be completely honest and not get the job with the client.

You would need to learn the following things, or at least about them:

MySQL

  1. The relational model, including normalization.

  2. MySQL's variant of SQL.

  3. Enough system's administration skills to install and maintain the database itself. This usually means some kind of Linux although you can install the database on Windows too.

  4. Some MySQL front end to actually work with the database, whether it is console, GUI, or web based.

Desktop programming to access the database

  1. Learn programming

  2. Learn a language

  3. Learn a GUI toolkit

  4. Learn a data access technology

Web programming to access the database

  1. Learn programming

  2. Learn a server side language

  3. Learn the three web client languages (HTML5, JavaScript, CSS)

  4. Learn a web framework

  5. Learn a data access technology

A mobile front end for your database

  1. I won't even bother making a list for this because it introduces the concept of services and n-tier architectures and you don't even want to talk about these things unless you really understand them well.

To get this done for this summer

  1. Build a time machine (It should take you some 40 years or so)

  2. Find a way to circumvent time paradoxes

  3. Go back in time to two years ago and tell yourself to learn all of the things in my post.

Plan B

  1. Get Microsoft Access. Learn it in about a week. Pray that it is enough.

Wanting to learn coding, best coding language for designing indie games? by QwertyDinosaurin learnprogramming

[–]adolfojp 1 point2 points ago

C# is really good for indie games. Here are some resources.

  • Unity3D (Web, iOS, Android, Desktop, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360).

  • XNA (Windows, Xbox 360, Windows Phone).

  • PSSuite (PlayStation Vita).

The XNA tutorial that I linked to is pretty basic. It's aimed at beginners.

I will not criticize you for voicing your opinion on the Internet, even when I disagree with it strongly, but I will give you some words of advice. You're criticizing the race of the commander in chief on the Internet. And that could cost you your military career. All that it would take for that to happen is for someone to dislike you enough to trace your identity and give the story to a national newspaper. And you've pissed off a lot of people. The media would love to make an expose on racism in the armed forces. Those are rating magnets. This ambiguous race redditor wishes you good luck. (You dumb fuck.)

Hey reddit, what's a good series (preferably two or three movies) to watch on a horror movie evening? by Crapalotin movies

[–]adolfojp 2 points3 points ago

I can't enjoy the movies, but only because I find the premise to be broken.

The movies are found footage movies. According to the plot somebody found some footage and edited it to show only the important parts. And some parts are even sped up to avoid the moments in time when nothing happens. And yet, during half of the movie nothing happens. The guy who edited the movies decided to include a bunch of dead air. This works great for creating tension, but it breaks the basic premise of the movie. And that bothers me because it makes me think that whoever found the footage is fucking with me by showing me so much nothingness.
