Weird post, but please help my mom out if you're near Wiesbaden, Germany by anonhelpplsin germany

[–]acida 2 points3 points ago

I don't live near Wiesbaden, but here's what i suggest (guess better and more suggestions will follow): Lots of restaurants and bars have students or just younger folk as waiters, and they normally speak a decent amount of english, so she can maybe give it a try and visit some restaurants and just ask if there's someone speaking english. I would suggest asking the concierge for recommendations.

I would not recommend visiting family run restaurants (e.g. asian fast food shops) cause most of the time they don't have anyone who's able to at least understand english.

She can also try and buy some "normal" food for herself, shouldn't be a problem, as all the prices are written down.

How long will she be in Wiesbaden?

edit: also, check out this site: http://www.wiesbaden.de/en/ and this one: http://wikitravel.org/en/Wiesbaden

[–]acida 0 points1 point ago

nowhere to get (at least I haven't seen those anywhere here):

  • candy corn
  • nerds
  • baby ruths
  • peeps
  • (almost) anything filled with peanutbutter

(not so) hard to get:

  • skittles
  • reeses
  • beef jerky (though it might be tough to get it through customs)
  • butterfinger
  • fluff spread
  • Hershey stuff
  • Snyder's pretzels (expensive as shit over here)
  • all kind of pop-tarts

Germans of Reddit: if someone where to bring you a gift from the US, what would you want? by schmorganin germany

[–]acida 1 point2 points ago

They are rare as we can only produce them in the few days in a month where the power lines are working.

Nah, just kidding ;-) You can buy (almost) every US cloth brand over here, but for ridiculous prices (compared to US prices). I bought myself tons of Wrangler/Cruel Girl/Carhatt jeans when staying in the Northwest, for $25 a piece, ~16€ back then. You pay >70€ for these over here.

Read hundreds of German classics online with project Gutenberg by acidain LANL_German

[–]acida[S] 1 point2 points ago*

To be honest, by hindsight it wasn't so bad. We didn't exactly appreciate it back then (being ~16 and all ...), but you get some cool quotes from it. The worst thing was that our teacher made us watch the "Romeo + Juliet" movie ... ;)

We had to read a lot of stuff in school, also some easier work like "Moon Palace" which I actually really enjoyed. I think it's a good think having to read so much, unfortunately it didn't improve my active english, but my passive english is pretty much perfect, thanks to reading heaps of english books.

edit: yes, I'm German.

Yup, you're right, it's more for people wanting to take a challenge or people who have reached intermediate level. But if you scan a little bit through the titles, you will see that you will not not only find the more challenging material (like Faust) but also some short and more easy to read poems (e.g. Wilhelm Busch). Plus hundreds of translated works from english authors (Edgar Wallace etc.), in case someone would like to read a book that he/she already knows what it's about :-)

PS: We had to read Shakespear's originals in english class in school ... Didn't help much though ;)

[–]acida 0 points1 point ago

hm, i'm not sure if i understand what you need? you need to stitch a monologue in german together and perform it? is it an option to use something existing? e.g. from some famous german literature (e.g. 'Faust' etc) ?

Anyone know any places in Southwest Germany to get good Buffalo Wings or mexican food? by TaiserSozein germany

[–]acida 1 point2 points ago

Enchilada in Karlsruhe/Pforzheim/Stuttgart has nice mexican food. However you want to be gone by 10 pm on weekend nights, as they turn the music annoyingly loud then. Food and cocktails though are good.

Ich will Deutsch lernen, aber.... by intangible-tangerinein GermanPractice

[–]acida 6 points7 points ago

Hallo, Muttersprachler hier.

Dein Deutsch gefaellt mir schon sehr gut.

LPT Request: How to stop or reduce hand sweat. by Jereeeeemyin LifeProTips

[–]acida 0 points1 point ago

If you use Antihydral, start ~5 days before your prom. Get some thin cotton gloves, apply AH thinly before going to sleep and wear the gloves during night. AH is white and you will get it all over your pillow/blanket without the gloves. Only apply it to the regions were you will sweat (e.g. not necessarily on the back of your hand, but just on the palm and sides. don't forget the finger gaps)

Use a lot of hand lotion.

good luck and have fun at your prom :-) And don't forget: It's not really an uncommon problem, lots of people are just good at hiding it :-)

I can confirm the odaban tip, source: dealing with hyperhidrosis for 15 years now.

Odaban is good. If it does not work for you, try another Aluminium Chlorid solution, like Yerka or Syneo5. You can also order your own micture in a pharmacy, try a 30% AlCl solution.

Start with applying daily, before you go to sleep. As soon as it starts working (might take 1-7 days, depending on your level of hyperhidrosis), decrease the interval, as it really dries up your skin. Use Lotion.

In some cases AlCl solutions do not work for hand hyperhidrosis (e.g. in my case). Then you may try Antihydral. Antihydral works like a charm, but has some really ugly side effects. It dries and hardens the skin, the skin starts cracking (no bleeding, just really dry) and it can hurt when showering/bathing as the skin shrivels and tightens. The side effects also take about 2-3 weeks to fade. I really only use it for important occasions (job interview) or once a year for my birthday, when every jerk wants to shake my hand :-(

Surgery is the very last step, but some people I know that did it, stated it was very painful. Others though said it was absolutely bearable. Also, it can have side effects, like "compensatory sweating" on other body parts (feet, arm pits etc.).

Botox is also an option, at least temporarily. It's not that common, at least in Germany, don't know what it's like at your place.

The method with the least amount of side effects is Ionotophoresis (no idea if thats the correct english word). You place your hands in 2 bowls of water and continous current (i had to look that up, don't know if thats correct) is conducted through the water and inhibits the perspiratory glands. it does not hurt at all, you just feel a little bit of prickling, if anything at all. Sadly it didn't work for me, but it normaly has a high success rate. The effect though, wears of after a few days, and you have to repeat it.

Lots of dermatologists offer Ionotophoresis treatment (at least in Germany), so I would recommend going to one of them. He might also have some more tips for you.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to drop me a note :-)

edit: PS: Although lots of people believe it, there's absolutely no evidence that ALCl causes (breast)cancer (don't know if you're a guy or girl, though your nickname may indicate a guy ;) ). There has been tests and researches from international cancer alliances and they could not find any connection at all. Sorry, I can't find the english article right now, only the german ones.
