Why did Luftwaffe aces have so many more victories then their allied counterparts? Was this disparity in WWI aswell? by T_Stebbinsin AskHistorians

Even if you had enough instructors from before the war, it would still be worth bringing in veterans who had war time experience with the latest technology.

The family of the Canadian woman who died climbing Mt Everest is asking for government assistance by ilikevodkain canada

[–]aardvarkious 2 points3 points ago

The family is paying to get her body off of Everest. They are simply asking for help getting it from an accessible city to Canada. Is this a service the government often preforms for citizens? If so, I don't see why it shouldn't be provided in this instance.

But are current tuition rates stopping poor students from going to school? I don't think so. I am from a family in the bottom quarter. I got no assistance from my family to get through school. I went to a private school in Alberta, meaning I paid significantly more money than most other students. I still managed to get through college and have my debt paid off in 6 months.

Most people don't get home from work until after 5:00. There are tonnes of people who are eating by 5:00. There are also lots of families sitting down to dinner as late as 8:00. But by 8:00, there are plenty of families going to bed. There is literally no time they can call that is convenient for everyone, and they have no idea if a particular time is convenient for you.

As for calling you back repeatedly: do you actually say "please take me off your list" when they call. Because the honest centres will actually take you off their list, but only if you ask. If they do happen to call you back, that is not the fault of the actual person who you are talking to- they just call the number they are given, usually without knowing whether or not it has been called before.

Where did I say I was under duress? Or that my lifestyle was difficult? I loved my school years. And, compared to most people in the world and throughout history, I lived like a king. It is only people that are looking through our society's lense of over consumption (that is what is responsible for the debt the OP talked about and I was replying to, not tuition) that what I had in my school years was "inadequate."

I had more than adequate food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities of life. Why should the taxpayer fund more than that? There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone being "more comfortable": with having many things that our consumer culture offers such as fancy cars, expensive electronics, nice vacations, meals out, etc... If someone wants to have a more lavish lifestyle than I did in school, that is perfectly fine. But there is absolutely no reason the taxpayer should be funding it. Public coffers should be opened to provide the basics of life, not all the extra consumer luxuries that are available. Why should the government fund big apartments, vacations, new cars, top of the line electronics, booze, eating out, and other luxuries?

Me and my team are portaging 20km and paddling 20km through downtown Toronto. We are attempting to raise $5000 to send 5-10 kids to camp that wouldn't otherwise be able. Please help us reach our goal by June 2nd, tax receipts are available. by mcrobin canada

[–]aardvarkious 0 points1 point ago

It depends on the camp. Many camps are way cheaper. But many camps are also not very nice. For a camp with nice facilities, good food, a decent program budget, and a high staff:student ratio it isn't bad.

Assume 6 full days for a week camp(half day at the beginning, 5 full days, half day at the end). Then you are talking about $83/day. Not bad for food, accommodation, entertainment, and adult supervision.

For the camp I do work with, it costs about $550 per person for a week. However, we only charge kids $400 of the cost. This doesn't include the money it costs to actually develop and upgrade the camp. And most of our people are volunteers. Food, program supplies, maintenance, fuel, insurance, and staffing costs can get mighty expensive.

I read this paragraph the other day:

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

What jumped out at me was that receiving material help when in need is lumped in with a bunch of religious practices. It seems to me that when Luke wrote "those who were being saved," he didn't just meant that in a religious sense but also meant that in the sense of their actual poverty being relieved.

I don't consider physically preventing people from doing what they have a right to do completely "peaceful." It is a type of physical force.

The thing is, I paid approximately twice as much for my education as Quebec students would have to pay for theirs under the proposed changes. I got no help from my family. I still managed to be out of student debt within 9 months of graduating. And that is with a low paying job in the non-profit sector.

Why was I able to do this? Because I made good choices. I got a miserable but high paying job in the summer. I took 5 years of school so I would have time to work part-time. During school, I lived frugally: I had a tiny apartment, a crap car, a low end laptop, hardly ever ate out, didn't vacation, didn't spend much money on booze, etc... And I kept this lifestyle up until my student loan was paid off. People who are in massive student debt are not in debt because that is a necessity to get through school. They are in debt because it is a necessity for them to get through school while living a certain lifestyle.

To Christians: Why do churches excommunicate members? How is this justifiable within the belief of Jesus and his teachings? Doesn't this kind of thing fly completely in the face of everything he stood for? by kearvelliin DebateReligion

[–]aardvarkious 0 points1 point ago

Jesus taught never to turn a believer away

Really? Then what exactly did he mean by this?

15 “If your brother or sister[b] sins,[c] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’[d] 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

We have a course that has unmanageable grass for about two months a year (although we are working on getting the city to mow it). We make sure we go out in large groups, and take turns going out on the fairway to spot and mark drives. It is a bit of a pain in the butt, but better than searching for discs.

All they get is a yes/no decision to buy or not buy the product. They get no hand in making corporate policy.

And they are free to not support that corporate policy with their money. A lot more free than anyone else.

If you learn how to work on an oil field, move to Fort McMurray, and spend 10 years in a career there before the oil field closes, then there's a good chance that you'd be pretty screwed. Workers take that risk when they go into a particular field and work in for a particular company.

Throughout that 10 years, the worker is guaranteed to make a very good income. The shareholders are not guaranteed to make any income, and in fact risk loosing money. And industries change. Doesn't mean workers are unable to find jobs in other industries that utilize their skills. I actually did spend time working in the northern Alberta oil field. I have now used experience from there in two different jobs

Living together before marriage by simon_wang12in Christianity

[–]aardvarkious 0 points1 point ago

I don't think there is anything wrong with living together as a couple before you get a legal piece of paper and stand in front of your community for a ceremony. However, I would say that you are not living together before marriage. I would say that you are married. You know the saying "if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and craps like a duck it is a duck?" Well, if you are living together as a married couple with all that entails, then you are a married couple.

And to that, I would make one comment and ask two questions. The comment is "you have made a marriage commitment that is sacred and should not be broken: outside of rare circumstances, breaking up isn't an option because that would be divorce." The first question would be "what is wrong with your marriage that you will not make it 'official' and that you will not acknowledge it before your community?" The second question is "how can I help your marriage get healthier?"
