You make it sound like the NHS provides no value/benefits. Strange, considering the amount of people it keeps alive and well.

I am proud and invested in making sure my fellow citizens are looked after, no matter how much they earn.

I have been head hunted by Intel, I could have made 3-4 times what I am earning now. But I turned them down because I want to help people.

I work for the NHS (public sector for non-UK) and last year I voluntarily froze my salary and didn't receive my contracted yearly increment. I did this because I feel other people need it more than I do.

I am in favour of increasing taxes on myself as well as others. I am proud to pay tax. I do not see it as theft as many people do, I see it as the entry price to a civilised society.

But that's just me.

People live up to and often beyond their means. No matter how much they earn*. It quickly becomes the norm and falling below it is quite jarring for some people.

(*until you get into silly money like Bill Gates for example)
