Frugal pet care: I just found out that you can buy the XL dog size of frontline/plus or advantage/II and apply it to your cats/small dogs. One XL dog dose is enough for 8 cat doses! by ZuGin Frugal

[–]ZuG -5 points-4 points ago

Not true. I just did the damn research, if you don't believe me actually go look up the ingredients yourself, don't just say I'm wrong. Frontline and advantage have the same active ingredients in the same percentages for both cats and dogs. Only the dose differs.

Look up the active ingredients yourself. Advantage and frontline both have the same ingredients in the same proportions for both cats and dogs. Only the dose differs, so with a syringe you can get more bang for your buck.

Not true. I can't speak to every medicine, but for the four I mentioned, I did the research. The active ingredients are exactly the same in the same proportions, only the dose itself is different. Do the research yourself, of course, but you don't need to be sensational.

Technially Technically, 90% of the world lives in the Northern hemisphere, so the jumps of the southerners would not cancel out the northerners.

It's the elephant in the room. The entire world's economy is based on an economic system that is impossible to maintain. Not just hard, actually impossible.

Nobody wants to talk about it because that fact has some extremely scary implications.

Sorry, that comment was ambiguous. I was referring to "factual" history, not the other version.

Edit: Also, if exobiology is a legitimate science, and most people think it is, you might be able to make a case for counterfactual history, depending on how rigorous it was. Astro/exobiologists look at things on earth and make extensions from their knowledge to predict what things on other planets might be like. I could see very similar techniques being used in counterfactual history, though of course it's messier. I could see it ranging from pure speculation to very seriously studied in as scientific a way as possible.

You know that "isn't enough" isn't the right phrase there.

Depends on how you do it. Science is a technique, not a label.

[–]ZuG 4 points5 points ago

Ah. Yes, I see your point. It's difficult, because on an individual level, the OP is right. Hard work and direction is the only way to get out of a bad situation.

On the societal level, though.. the system is all kinds of fucked up, and that's really the root of unpaid internships and flipping burgers and moving back in with your parents post-college. So, you're right, believing that hard work is all you need is dangerous when you apply that logic to others.

You did the right thing. Chucking it in a trashcan would have made her feel like being a jerk was justified. This way, she's going to have a good long think about how she treats people.

It sounds to me like you're already well into doing what the guy suggested. He's not talking to you; you are the success story he's trying to talk about.

I daresay there are plenty of answers there for you now for cheap entertainment.

To add to what others have said, any of a billion meetups on meetup.com. OKCupid. Go out to no-cover/low-cover bars/clubs and don't drink. Join a sports team through your city rec leagues (sometimes free, sometimes merely very cheap). Volunteer at a community org of your persuasion. Volunteer for festivals. Volunteer at your local theater company, you'll meet people AND get free tickets to take potential dates on.

I'm pretty sure the OP in the comment is talking specifically to you.

So let's brainstorm. If you're just looking for a random minimum wage job, experience isn't actually needed. Think of all the semi-related crap you've done for people in an unpaid capacity and put that on your resume. If you haven't done any of that, volunteer at a community organization, do fabulously, then use your supervisor and coworkers as references.

If you aren't looking for a burger flipping type minimum wage job, we can probably figure that out too. What are you trying to do? What do you think qualifies you to work for them without experience? What skills are you missing? Doing some community volunteering is still a great idea, it shows that you haven't been spending your out of work time playing video games and letting your skills atrophy.

I hate HATE the idea of unpaid internships, but if you can get a good one it might be worth it if you stand a good chance of getting your foot in the door professionally.

The economy sucks - people shouldn't have to work for free to get paid - only people with a fair bit of privilege can even access that.

That said, I agree with your larger point.

My read was that he was particularly talking to people of privilege, those who had the computers and internet access and free time and possibly college education and whatnot handed to them by their family. If you're under 20 and sitting around on reddit, all that is likely to be true.

Choking is significantly more dangerous than generally realized.

Aside from that, trying to make your partner happy in bed makes you awesome, not shitlordy!

Can you critique robotic sex dolls from a feminist perspective without being ableist? by PurpleHyacinthin SRSDiscussion

I was talking about the documentary linked in the post, not the OPs side comment. Sorry if that wasn't more clear.

Can you critique robotic sex dolls from a feminist perspective without being ableist? by PurpleHyacinthin SRSDiscussion

[–]ZuG 3 points4 points ago

Of course not, I wasn't talking about people on the ASD spectrum, hence "gone through severe emotional trauma". I was talking specifically about people who have been subjected to very intense emotional abuse in their lives, which I think is pretty clear from my context.

If you get a chance to see the documentary, watch it. I think you'll see what I'm talking about.

Also, you never actually answered my question.

Can you critique robotic sex dolls from a feminist perspective without being ableist? by PurpleHyacinthin SRSDiscussion

[–]ZuG 2 points3 points ago

Damaged is a descriptor. It's roughly equivalent to "his leg was damaged in a car accident".

What word would you prefer to describe the emotions of people who have undergone severe emotional trauma? The ones that come to mind are either synonyms of damaged or ignore the trauma, which doesn't seem empathetic at all.

Can you critique robotic sex dolls from a feminist perspective without being ableist? by PurpleHyacinthin SRSDiscussion

[–]ZuG 3 points4 points ago

I suspect that only people who are very emotionally damaged would consider a sex doll any sort of female replacement. It's sad for the emotionally stunted men, not degrading to the (non-existent) women.

I watched the documentary referenced in the piece some time back. All of the men who owned these sex bots were clearly in mourning. They weren't emotionally ready to deal with adult relationships and women. Should they have been in therapy instead of spending 10k on a sex bot? Absolutely, but it doesn't mean they are degrading women. They are, in my eyes, avoiding it.

Suggestion: The "pure" IRC format makes it pretty hard to read through the conversation, I gave up about a quarter of the way in. In the past, successful educational IRC chat type dels works better as a lecture/seminar speech on a topic, followed by Q&A. Preferably, the topics are decided on ahead of time and specific speakers are asked to prepare a history. That way, speakers can prepare their initial words with ample time, citations, careful wording, etc. The Q&A can help speakers expand on what's going on.
