Reddit, How is legalizing drugs any different from abolishing gun control?? by badcaseofgaussin AskReddit

[–]Zer_ 0 points1 point ago

Legalizing drugs would come with the associated control, much like you cannot acquire alcohol, or cigarettes until you are 18. Regulating guns is the same thing. You need a license to drive, a license to own guns.

There's nothing hypocritical in that.

This.

That's the thing, while a university's contributions with research are definitely important, the whole reason there's a university in the first place is for undergraduate instruction. When it comes to how much we value our education, that's what matters in the context of tuition hikes.

Quebec is very socialist, which is very much the opposite of how Alberta seems to be. There's very little special treatment. All provinces are subject to the same equation when calculation Equalization Payments.

Some data might be recoverable, but from the sound of it, the procedure involves taking out the disks and putting them into an identical casing to see if any of the data is intact.

I know that Quebec has mostly been a Have Not, believe me we don't like it any more than other provinces do. Quebec has a history of reckless spending, corruption and poor fiscal management, that's the problem. It's a problem that will take a huge amount of restructuring and referendums to solve.

My biggest issue at the moment is how Quebec has privatized Hydro Quebec, and has agreed to sell our surplus energy to the United States at absurdly low prices.

Oh I agree. I was merely pointing out that quality of education isn't always in line with R&D budget. I love that McGill is doing a great deal for research of all kinds. To say that McGill is the BEST PLACE EVARR is kind of foolish.

My sister went to McGill to be a teacher, which McGill is known for. Other programs found at McGill are more in line with other universities such as Concordia.

Same way. I don't hate all cops, only the ones that cross the line. However, it is known that most cops will arrest the peaceful ones by following orders. To be honest, in the cop's case, that's more of a systemic issue than anything else.

Subsidizing day cares to allow single parents or couples who both work to have more affordable day cares. Overall gives more time for these people to go back to work.

I'm not being an asshat, merely responding to your generalization. Here in Montreal, many of us are affected by the protests, including myself.

Education is seen as an investment and it's largely true.

Did you know that the percentage of students doing part time jobs in Quebec is higher than the United States?

How ironic that some opponents are telling the students to get a job.

The animosity between Quebec and the more English speaking provinces is aggravating. I'm a French Canadian, my mother was born in Quebec, and my father was born in London. The divide of us VS them is fundamentally stupid, and it only harms Quebec and Canada.

Highly regarded because they have a huge R&D budget and a couple of highly rated programs. 2-3 great programs with the rest being neglected does not make for a great university.

And yet pitting the blame for those stupid incidents on the group as a whole is pretty dumb. It angers me to see these things happen, yet I can't bring myself put everyone under the same umbrella on this issue. Most of the protesters have been peaceful. Those who are violent are those that ruin it for everyone, even the protesters themselves.

Yes, and I fucking hate the Quebec Government for that. Privatizing Hydro Quebec, and selling our Hydroelectricity and resources at dirt cheap prices to the United States is ridiculous. Our government also sucks at managing funds.

Increase of both parents working is something that started in the 80s and 90s. The day care program is much, much more recent, 2009-2010ish.

I agree. However when there are huge protests like this, the message tends to get muddled, which is what happened. The initial plan to protest tuition hikes evolved as a response to criticisms, though.

First it was: "We don't want tuition to go up!" People replied: "You already pay the lowest!" Then it turned into: "Our taxes are high, and our government is corrupt, so no, putting that burden on students is dumb!" Charest said: "ILLEGAL!" Studends: "Fuck you!" Unions: "Well this sucks" And over time it just got muddled.

Even adjusted for inflation, the tuition has been going up when factoring in cost of living. Also minimum wage stagnation and average salary.

It's less about disagreeable and more about the social divide between Quebec and Canada. I fucking hate this stupid divide. I hate separatists just as much as I hate those who want Quebec gone.

Not quite!

Let me try to just input some facts in here.

Lets get to the "have" / "have not" provinces. For the last few years, Ontario has been a have not, while Newfoundland has been a have province. Basically, there are now (and for the next few years for sure) four "have" provinces: BC, AB, SK and NL. The following table is taken from the Federal Government site on the latest round of equalization payments - made under the new Conservative government formula allegedly "fairer":

Province :-------Equalization :----------Per capita :

  • PEI-------------337 M$----------------$ 2,390.07
  • Nova Scotia----1,268 M$---------------$ 1,351.52
  • New Brunswick--1,495 M$--------------$ 1994.66
  • Québec---------7,391 M$--------------$ 944.07
  • Ontario---------3,261 M$--------------$ 249.52
  • Manitoba-------1,671 M$---------------$ 1,367.43

So if Quebecers are living in luxury at the expenses of the "have provinces", what does that tell you about Manitobans and the residents of the "have not" Atlantic provinces?

Lets look at some current facts. They come from the following sources: Pop. figures: Federal government numbers for 2009; current provincial deficits, debt to GDP ratio, Federal transfers as % of province revenues: come from each province's latest budgets, as compiled by CBC, finally, net debts of provinces: TD Canada economic forecast figures.

----------------------------------------------Ontario Québec Manitoba Nova Scotia

  • Pop. (2009) (x 1000)------------------------13,029----7,829----1,222---------938
  • Budget Deficit-------------------------------15.3 B$---1.5 B$----460 M$-----211 M$
  • Net Debt------------------------------------260.4 B$--178.5 B$--15.4 B$---13.7 B$
  • Debt to GDP ratio----------------------------37.2 %----35.2 %----27.4 %----34.8 %
  • Federal transfers as % of provincial revenue---19.4 %----22.8 %----28.1 %----32.1 %

The federal transfer payments include ALL transfers to the province's revenue. It is interesting to add here that on that basis, Alberta gets 12% of its provincial general revenue from Federal transfers.

If Quebec is like Greece, with a small deficit of $1.5 B$ this year (and a forecasted return (Yes! return) to balanced budget next year), what does that say of Manitoba at double the deficit in proportion, and Ontario at five times! And how could the Manitoba and Nova Scotia government fare - extravagant as they are - without the huge Federal transfer that buoy them up?

Finally, here are a couple of little facts about the "$7-a-day daycare program in Quebec: 1) All economic studies so far (and there have been a few) have concluded that the program generates for the province's government approximately $1,5 B$ in revenue a year ABOVE the cost of the program. 2) the very existence of this program is cited in the annual UN Human Development Index as having helped Canada up two positions in the index, with a complaint that it had not been adopted by all provinces. Go figure, Alberta!
