The thing to remember about alcohol and Diabetes is that alcohol lowers blood sugar levels. These effects are not immediate, and can occur anywhere from half an hour, to 12-18 hours after consumption. The reason this can often be a major cause for concern is that some teenagers are prone to getting so drunk that they throw up, and then pass out. This is something you should be extremely wary of, as getting low during such a state of unawareness is very bad news. My doctors initially told me that for the first couple times drinking, I should go and eat a takeaway (such as a large pizza, or burger and chips) before bed and NOT inject for it. However, they specifically advised me to only do this until I was confident about my familiarity with how alcohol affects my sugars.

Also, you may not want to hear this, but a party is almost definitely one of the worst places to try drinking for the first time as a diabetic. It's important that you are in an environment with other people who understand the condition and will know what to do if something goes wrong - i.e., an adult, preferably one of your parents. If they are against this kind of thing, discuss it with them, or ask your doctor to.

If you've never drunk alcohol before, I would certainly recommend not having two or three drinks. The effects take place slowly, so also be careful not to drink too much at once.

Last piece of advice: relax! there is very little to worry about if you're sensible and observant. I'm 21 (UK), and have been drinking since before I was diagnosed (diagnosis at 15). Since diagnosis, I have gotten so drunk that I have thrown up numerous times. The thing to do in this situation is just to eat, even if you feel like you shouldn't, or can't.
