TIL Sherlock Holmes regularly injected cocaine because he believed it stimulated his brain. by toadsfordonutsin todayilearned

[–]WinterAyars 0 points1 point ago

This is a bit difficult, but i think you've got it a little backwards. He didn't do drugs so much as a stimulant, but as a way to relieve boredom.

After the Moriarty case, he's never shown doing cocaine. Possibly kicked the habit while on the run?

In a sense, abusing prescription drugs is the 21st century of abusing cocaine to cure boredom. Cocaine has a different connotation today, and Sherlock is a modernization of the stories so it's a bit tricky.

Yes, i realized that after i remembered the tf2 one was also a SB reference.

Blizzard intentionally makes passwords non-case sensitive by oterenin netsec

[–]WinterAyars 3 points4 points ago

And yet when you create an account, blizzard strongly urges you to pick a complex password and provides a little rating thing.

My bet is they just want to field fewer "I lost my password" tech support calls.

There's a team fortress version of this. For a moment, i thought that was the (rather oblique) reference.

"Show, don't tell" - Diablo 3's storytelling failures by dbcanuckin Diablo

[–]WinterAyars -1 points0 points ago

...everyone who sees you fight is astonished at how well you do it.

That's neither how nor why.

Diablo 1 was not attempting to build a realistic game world, it was attempting to present a game. As you said, technology limited it.

Diablo 2 doesn't really explain it either, but it doesn't call attention to the issue as much.

Mouz vs. Keita.. by vectorix108in DotA2

[–]WinterAyars 1 point2 points ago

Basically the tldr version is that, after a long and hard game, Keita made a pair of pretty serious back-to-back mistakes that cost them the game. (Three if you count buying Rapier to begin with :P)

But the game hasn't done enough to establish that i'm a badass more dangerous than the armies of heaven, including the unbeatable angel. I go from fighting random zombies in a goddamn forest to murdering the physical incarnation of evil without much explanation on how or why that's happening, so it just looks like everyone else is an idiot. Sure, the numbers are going up, but that doesn't put what those numbers mean into some sort of comprehensible context.

Diablo is even worse. "Hahah, you totally killed my entire army single handedly and are now coming for me? I... I wasn't using them anyway, armies are, uh, totally lame... I don't even know why I bothered dragging them all the way here and stuff."

Then after you punch his face he tries to trap you in negative world to keep you from totally crushing him. This is not a villain, this is a guy who is getting his shit wrecked while he watches helplessly.

What's the Point of the Phone Race As Unlimited Bandwidth disappears? by OogyPoogyin Android

[–]WinterAyars 0 points1 point ago

Oh, yes, i see what you're getting at. That is true. It's one of the reasons i wish we would regulate the spectrum more, rather than just letting VZW buy it all to see what happens.

What's the Point of the Phone Race As Unlimited Bandwidth disappears? by OogyPoogyin Android

[–]WinterAyars 0 points1 point ago

Yes, and Sprint's spectrum isn't very high quality, either--1900 MHz as opposed to, ie, VZW's 700. Getting new spectrum is hard, too, since any time new spectrum becomes available VZW buys it. They have all the money so they keep winning the auctions.

That is also true of land lines. The limits are much higher, admittedly, but they're still there.

I know some people here complain about their battery life, but I think my GN does pretty well for itself. by ltewavin GalaxyNexus

Especially on this phone, and even more so if you have a solid signal. My previous phone was better on wifi too, but this phone seems to be very good on wifi idling.

As i see it, spectrum is the real concern.

  1. I have wifi for that (as well as a real computer), it was just a hypothetical
  2. That's not why we're paying high prices
  3. I can pull 3-6 mbit off-peak on sprint and i don't live in the middle of nowhere so i doubt that's true in my region. The nearest major metropolitan area can get 6+ without too much trouble.
  4. Other than that, i think you're saying roughly what i'm saying, here although you came to a different conclusion.

It appears not to.

Sprint gave their usage data to a study a while ago that found (as, surely, the carriers know) it's not the top 1% of users that cause data congestion, it's actually the bottom 99%. The problem with data congestion isn't that someone downloads a 1gb movie overnight (though if they torrent it that's hard on the network, admittedly). The problem is that everyone else decides they all want to check their email at exactly 5 pm, simultaneously.

You're overlooking the fact that data limits aren't because of some objective "data shortage", or whatever, but are instead attempts by ATT/VZW to exploit low-information customers.
