The real question is "which is wider?" by theyoyomasterin cars

[–]Wheelman 0 points1 point ago

From Wikipedia:

Hummer H1 Width 86.5 in (2,197 mm)

Gallardo Width 74.8 in (1,900 mm)

Reventon Width 2,058 mm (81.0 in)

Aventador Width 2,030 mm (79.92 in) (w/mirrors: 2,265 mm (89.17 in))

I declare the Aventador with mirrors to be wider.

Anyone know what this car is? I don't have another photo of it. by yutfreein cars

Does anyone else think of Cruella De Vil from 101 dalmatians when they see one of these?

Table Legs or Posts from 2x4s... by HAM70in DIY

[–]Wheelman 1 point2 points ago

Awesome! I am actually doing this this week (just bought the 2x4s yesterday) for a super nice tabletop I got off CL that didn't have any legs. I'm definitely going to try making a tapering jig and see how that works.

Yeah, but they're harder to get a lot of times, and often more expensive. I have found this to be true when trying to get stuff for my lathe. Its often easier to glue two pieces together and truly get a square post.

I taught my dad how to do a brake job - his way of letting us know and saying thanks. by Wheelmanin DIY

My grandpa didn't teach my dad how to fix much, and consequently, he didn't teach me much about DIY (he did teach me tons of other important things). I have spent a lot of time learning about cars, fixing stuff, etc as I became an engineer and have tried to repay him by teaching him things. He has a cool sense of humor and wouldn't ever call me up and tell me that he finally figured it out, but instead he does little things like this.

My brother is only 15, has a lot of money saved from a job. What's the best options for someone this young? by I_want_UPBOATSin personalfinance

ROTH IRA

You can't go wrong with one. I believe it even lets you make a penalty free disbursement for higher education and for the purchase of a first home. As long as the money is basically tax free because he doesn't make enough, do what he can to keep it that way.

Teach him not to speed (and get caught), drive drunk or show off his mad driving skills to friends and he should be well on his way to a debt free college career....

Could I own a gold store? Maybe even bars that I made myself from old dental fillings? It'd certainly be a reasonable store of value...

My father owns a CPA firm. This was a thinking outside the box exercise for me.

However, he deals more with finding tax breaks and helping you do things on a year by year basis, and hasn't done a lot of returns for people in my situation. He usually gets people when they're making 500k+ and are stuck paying up.

Can you explain a bit more on how to generate losses without having a business that's either a fraud or doesn't earn anything?

Need some EV conversion advice by dmaredditin DIY

http://www.diyelectriccar.com/ There are forums, explanations, howtos, and everything you could ever want to know about a conversion.

Before you start, make sure you do the math on how long it will take you to recoup the investment. Even if your electricity is cheap, you're still shelling out thousands for the conversion + donor car. I looked at it extensively, but couldn't economically justify replacing my $3000 car with an EV. Why has it become politically fashionable to villainize teachers? by msubirdiein PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Wheelman 4 points5 points ago

But how do you fix the problem of middle aged teachers that aren't doing a good job teaching and don't care about much about their students? Why don't we have a process that we can remove teachers that time and again get terrible ratings from students, parents, etc?

I will agree with that. However, the tenure process is still less than ideal.

A lot of teachers deserve the flak they're getting. The idea of tenure is ridiculous. So if I understand correctly, because a teacher works hard for a few years, got their ducks in a row, smiled at the right people, they get tenured, which makes it take an act of God to fire them when they become lazy and complacent.

Why is right to fire a bad idea? Seems pretty good to me - gives us the chance to do a little necessary cutting out the fat every few years...

I second this. Looks great after 5 minutes, crappy after 5 days.

It's like (arm stuck up through wheel well past three obstacles to get to automatic headlight motor bolt) dang, I can get this bolt started, it's too tight to turn by hand... (reaches for ratchet, damn it won't fit...) oh wait. I have that nifty thumbwheel ratchet I thought was cool in the store and it works perfectly. Now I don't have to remove the entire bumper!
