I guess that is what I must accept for my sloppyness.

What caused serfdom to gain prevalence over slavery in Europe? by anticounterin AskHistorians

[–]WhatsUpWithTheKnicks 1 point2 points ago

As far as I can guess not, because there are passages in the New Testament were Paul basically demands to treat slaves decently - which implies it's OK for a Christian to have slaves. I do not know of any Christian doctrine that somehow totally forbids beeing a slave holder. Compare this to the doctrines abot banking and tithing which lead th the Jewish banking "monopoly" in mediaval Europe. Also Spanish Konquistadores had no qualms to hold the Indians a slaves on the sugar plantages.

That is just wrong.

First understand that at that time there were more than 100 German states all with different laws etc. Poland was divided at least twice by the superpowers of Russia, Austria and Prussia. So in general the idea of one Germany or one Poland was foreign to that time.

The general image we Germans have with being efficient etc pp? This has a lot to do with Prussia and specially with the institutions that were comparatively very early very far advanced in Prussia: the military and education.

I am by no means an expert on the subject, but I know a few things through the history of my family. My ancestors were teachers for the kings of Prussia since at least ~1650, btw. the prince of Brandenburg would only get the title of a king (king in Prussia) in the year 1700 (or 1701 can't remember). However, we could make a living by maintaining a highschool in a Prussian village since those days.

What we can learn from that alone is, that even the rural population experienced a certain degree of literacy. At least enough to support a guy entertaining a classroom.

I also know that there was a law about compulsatory visit of highschool as early as 1717. (This also indicates a fundamental cultural difference between Prussa and the USA.)

I know that college students used to get free meals in the houses of the bourgoise families in exchange for teaching the children.

These students who moved from the rural sides to the big cities to study there, would later organize to bring national unity and democray to Germany. (As any friggin WW2 movie shows: it didn't pander out. Oh, well.)

In regard to "paid by rich families": there were no rich families in Prussia or Poland and that time. To be rich your either have to steal like a French nobleman or be a capitalist like a Dutch trader or an American printer. Being rich is a very relative term.

I could make 5 rage comics for every day I work there.

That's a new metric to evaluate how bad your job.

  • How 's your job?

  • Worth of round about 6-7 rage comics per week.

  • Oh, that's pretty decent, huh?

There are a lot of things under the heavens that make it perfectly reasonable to be pessimistic or unhappy. Maybe you are just sober in observation. It is not necessary to run through life grinning like an idiot in a comercial. A true smile is more earnest than that.

The anxiety and fear of being alone forever has taken me and I feel it everyday. (I was reading a subreddit the otherday about relationships and actually started crying when I read about some of the sweet things couples did with eachother because I feel like that’ll never happen to me)

You are putting the pussy on a pedestal like they say. A relationship will not make you happy. As a man you will have to earn to construct your hapiness from within. Without relying on others. Once you learned that, you are strong and independent and in subsequence you will be able to share your hapiness with a partner (and thusly increasing it). But if you expect a girls to make you magically happy from unhappiness, you will just get disapointed again and again.

Remember Euor 88? As a German it was awful, but as a Prussian it was nice and dandy that you guys humilitated the Bavarians in their stadium. (And also you won for capitalism (which you invented) against socialism, which I liked too.)

I think wether it is the country or the association that is represented ultimately this on two factors. The law of the involved countries and the diplomatic contracts between the countries and by extension maybe some UN papers. In all these there is either written something that makes it official in the truest sense and thus the country is represented or it is not and then it is not.

To be fair the thread started with Germany as a topic. And then an Indian who is rooting for Germany. If that is no reason to loose something in translation, I don't know what is.

P.S. I am a German. 'Nuff said.

Question for you guys, from a Raiders fan by wankmastagin NYGiants

[–]WhatsUpWithTheKnicks 0 points1 point ago

Me being a Giants fan has nothing to do whatsoever with the Jets. I did not choose Giants over Jets, I choose Giants over the rest of the NFL.

I am not form NY so the newyorknessness of your question doesn't cut to it either. But I say this: I always loved the skyscrapers of NY and the fact the team is named after them pleases me because it points to an aspect of NY I happen to like.

If I would be from NY and the question would be: which NY team should I root for? Then I have to say: I don't decide on a team like that. The Giants decided on me when I was watching them play.

In general let me say this: there is some merit in rooting for the underdog and I get this and tend to honor this but it is not always the one overriding factor.

Man, I am happy the Vkings are staying in Minnesota.

[–]WhatsUpWithTheKnicks -1 points0 points ago

Yes, it goes into that direction. Please understand that I cannot know it ultimately in every detail and so on, I am not a trusted friend of F. Torres so go figure. But as a fan and former player of Atletico he will of course not play for Madrid. That has something to do with that club loyalty I was asking for.

Wether you like Atletico more can have todo with issues of social class, regional identity, this is in Spain sometimes more important than national identity. It is not "just" because he played for Atletico. It is "huge", not "just".

What has this totdo with Madrid? Only because I am madridista you think I said Madrid would have deserved the win?

[–]WhatsUpWithTheKnicks -1 points0 points ago

No it couldn't. You clearly don't know Spain as a country as a society. There is a resonn why for example Ramos is playing for Madrid for years now. Or why Torres is not playing for Madrid (and thusly wins the CL hahaha).

Congrats to Bayern for pulling off a Vizekusen: Finishing second in Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League by db82in soccer

[–]WhatsUpWithTheKnicks 0 points1 point ago

I didn't say Arsenal have never won the league. I said, the Never in Neverkusen stems from the fact that Leverkusen missed tht title so often that they get know for that. In a similiar manner Arsenal has this discussion wether Wenger is all good for the club, becuase they missed the title so often. It's a more general statement.
