Being an atheist in Alabama isn't easy... by ndjs22in atheism

[–]WhaleStep 0 points1 point ago

I recently had the very same thing happen, and it was awful.

Keep your head up.

Also, GTFO of Alabama.

I finally did it. I publicly announced to my ultra-conservative family that I'm no long a Christian, and I may need your help. by WhaleStepin atheism

Somehow I hadn't noticed this comment, and never acknowledged it.

That's super clever.

I'm contemplating the idea of making her an account with a custom tailored front page.

Agreed. I thought I'd get her to like it because of all the space and astronomy/cosmology love on here-- but the athiesm didn't bode well with her Christianity.

Now... how she plans on becoming and astrophysicist as a Christian is beyond me.

I've done significant amounts of research (this has been years and years in the making), but I don't exactly have it all bookmarked and organized.

I do think my father is brilliant, he's an engineer, mathematician, CEO of an engineering business. It blows my mind that he is still religious, but, he has not ever really investigated the things that would make him question his faith. He has avoided them entirely, for his entire life. It's a very strange thing to see. You're probably right though, he is going to argue rings around me until his dying day.

If you have any good posts, send them along. I'll be working to arrange thoughts so that I can communicate them effectively.

You guys have a way of reminding me that for all my love of science I really don't know shit about physics.

Let's pretend.

Also, I never considered that. That's actually really awesome. Thank yeh.

So what you're saying is:

This formerly worn-down, beaten down, crime ridden shit hole that used to be rated as one of the economically poorest states in the country has completely turned around; we've brought hundreds of free and fun events downtown, we've built businesses and living complexes, schools and medical centers, jobs, entertainment venues, random cool events (large water slide down Lyon, zombie walk/rave, chalk day/GREM/ Lip Dub/pillow fights/etc.) and the largest art contest in the world. We've got a community that gets together to do good and that cares about the city we live in and the people that live here. We've got a community so tight knit that you can't go anywhere in Grand Rapids without running into people you know. We've got a community that's friendly and kind; a community that says hello to you when you pass them on the sidewalk, or that introduces you to their friends when you start a conversation at an event.

And what you're saying is that it's embarrassing for our community to come together and fight off a bad title? Even Roger Eberts said it was "the best music video (he's) ever seen," and that guy is a hell of a picky critic.

I don't know who you are or what you do, but you are truly missing the boat. This city is incredible.

If you check out this link, you'll see that crime is down 17 % overall-- although homicides are up 88% (because of that one nut case. There were only 9 murders in GR in 2010, and 17 in 2011 because mr psychopath went on a rampage.

I pay 220 in rent. Gas is a complete bitch everywhere-- so I ride a road bicycle (bought on craigslist for 70$) anywhere I need to go that doesn't require a vehicle. Food depends on what you eat. I eat quite a bit more cheaply than most folks I know by being picky about it. You can spend anywhere from 150$ a month to 500$ depending on if you eat out, use coupons, etc. Average pay is minimum wage (7.40$ an hour) but if you're clever, skilled, or know the right people you can find decent jobs fairly easily.

Well, im 21 and tiny and I have no worries walking around my neighborhood at 4am alone. It's common sense. If you see shady people, go a different way. If they follow you, run somewhere with people around (gas station). Overall it's pretty safe. Worst case scenario, you get robbed.
