Charts like this can be really misleading. In this instance, the size of all the dots would mean each satellite is larger than an entire city.

I know it's just meant to represent each satellite, but this makes it look a lot more cluttered than it actually is.

Google TV Vs. Roku Vs. WD Live+, Which is "best"? by Hodrin gadgets

I've just tested out XMedia Recode and it does exactly what I need. It will take apart the mkv and reassemble it into an m4v format without converting the video or audio. It turns out that Apple TV needs to use the m4v container to allow the ac3 passthrough, even though mp4 and m4v are virtually identical.

Since it's not doing any conversion, the whole processed is done in a couple of minutes rather than an hour.

The only downside is that this process will not allow the video to be played on an iPad or an iPhone. The one last and final step needed to be fully compatible is to convert the AC3 audio into a stereo AAC format and have both of those tracks embedded in the file. I know handbrake will do this, but handbrake will still convert the video file so that process will take up to an hour for the highest quality.

I'm still seeking out the perfect solution!

I just gave GOTSent a try. I looks to do exactly what we need. I haven't played the file on the apple tv yet, but it converted nicely a plays well from the desktop. I'll keep you posted.

So I've done some more research, and it looks like GOTSent looks like it will do what I'm looking for. It'll demux the mkv and just convert it to mp4, maintaining the video quality and keeping the sounds to 5.1. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm curious to see the results.

I've been doing more research, and it looks like it will handle 5.1 encoded files by sending the single to a digital receiver via hdmi or fiber optic cable.

Using handbrake, you can convert the mkv and set the audio to include Dolby Pro Logic and AC3 passthrough, making the file compatible to play on a variety of systems and still allow 5.1 audio if your receiver supports. it.

This is where I'm stuck now. XenonMKV does a great job of demuxing the video so there's no loss of quality, but you then sacrifice the audio. Handbrake, on the other hand supports AC3 passthrough, so your audio should be great, but it re-encodes the video rather then remuxing, so you'll lost quality there.

I'm trying to find the best of both worlds at the moment, but so far no avail.

That is unfortunately true. The great thing about it is it's the easiest solution to use at the moment.

I'm a software developer, and I'm currently working on my own conversion utility specifically designed for Apple TV 2, but that is still a ways out.

EDIT: Actually, after reading this it looks like Apple TV only supports 2 channel sound in their video files after all.
